Has anyone used either of these hops? I'm curious but would like to hear how they've turned out for others before I buy some.
The description on the grower's site sounds really nice. They're a little pricey though at $30/lb (for an unknown hop variety).
The story of MI Local Hops tough finding a beer brewed with them, but here is an article about them. Might check with some of these brewers listed here http://www.greatlakeshops.com/new-glh-exclusive-varieties.html. Some beers: Leelanau Pale Ale
I have driven by that farm on M-72. It is the largest in MI by far. There are many in the area near Traverse City. I have used a variety named Empire, from Empire hops, and it is Saaz like with a higher AA.
Hmmm, somehow I missed that list. I know the brewer from Kent Falls, I shot off an email to him about the hops. Thanks
From the above linked article: “The variety I’m asked about every day is Michigan Copper, which is a Michigan Proprietary variety. It’s been hard to find anyone who has brewed with it because it’s been grown in such low volume. Its profile is supposed to be very similar to a Galaxy hop, and if that’s the case … we’ve got a winner.” Michigan Copper has the potential to be a real exciting hop!! Cheers!
The description and looks of the Lawton is like the wild hops I pick in Northern Michigan except mine tested at 10.8% alfa acid. Even though I am a big buy Michigan products man the price tag of the others need to come down before I buy any!
Hops from MI are a little more than hops from the PNW. It looks like Proprietary hops f of MI are more than ones from the PNW. Some of that is start up costs. Some is due to lower yield for a lot of the varieties (not all). Some may be due to the need to monitor and fight mildew in a more humid environment.
I've never heard of these. Will they let you purchase them at small shops in MI? Or can you only get these through breweries? These days, any descriptors of "tropical" are all the rage, and rightly so if you ask me. I'd love to check them out someday. Cheers.
I spent almost an hour perusing their offerings to homebrewers...specifically hop rhizomes that can take the heat and alkaline soils of my terroir here: Amalia, Brewer's Gold, Columbus, Wye Challenger, Yeoman, and Zenith look promising
