I have been to Germany many many times during Oktoberfest time. This year I went to Germany from Sept 23-October 3. I have NEVER experienced so much rain in Germany as I did on this trip. Terrible. We had one sunny afternoon on September 23, and enjoyed it on the Schumacher (Düsseldorf) patio.

    A couple quick Oktoberfest observations.

I was excited to check out the new Bräurosl tent. But then reality struck. It's very plain, very visually boring. Exposed metal beams. Soulless. I didn't even stick around for a beer.

The Schützen-Festzelt (Löwenbräu) however, was fantastic, even at 3:30 on a Wednesday afternoon! The entire tent was up on the benches dancing and singing to the usual loud and rocking Wiesn hits.

We had to leave there around 4:30 to get to the Augustiner tent for our 5:00 reservations. I have been to this tent in previous years, so I kinda knew what to expect. Compared to many of the other Oktoberfest tents, it's just sorta boring. Slow to get going. Plus, I don't think the beer is as good as any of the others. Really. And I know, "it's from the barrel", "it's locally owned", "it's the best Munich beer". Meh. I should have just stayed at the Schützen fest tent instead!

The Oide Wiesn is certainly worth a look despite the 4 Euro entry fee. Three nice sized tents. We had some beer (Augustiner) in the Traditional tent, which seats 5,000 with an additional 3,000 in the beer garden. But because of the rain and cold, it was chilly as hell inside the tent. Even the waitstaff were wearing jackets!

Might post a few pics if I can figure out how to do it...

This information came from Inside, a German beverage weekly based in Munich that can be a bit gossipy, but the facts usually come from real insiders.

Thomas told us August 2018 that he planned to close it down once his lady friend retired, in 3 years. Covid made that happen sooner. We planned on returing in 2020, sigh.
