Hi, just looking for some recommendations on bottle shops in Mystic & beers to look for. My mule is my mom so I'm not wanting to send her on some wild beer chase. I told her to look for captains daughter & pretty much anything NEBCO. Any other ideas on beers & a one stop shop to find them? Thanks!
There is some helpful info in this thread about captains daughter, with shops closer to brewery being the best chance. For Nebco, best bet is probably Amity Wine & Spirits which is like 2 blocks away from the brewery. They would carry Captains Daughter also but I would call first and ask, it doesn't sit long on shelves. Seeing as your mom is in Mystic, which is between Nebco and Grey Sail, I would just send her directly to brewery for fills. Have her hit Beer'd as well if you like hops, it's 10mins from Mystic!
indeed, have Mom go to Beer'd. Not only is it close by but it's definitely a surer thing than NEBCO or the Daughter
I have been to Mystic A&P liquor store. I had some decent stuff. Pickup Sea Hag and Premeditate Murder a few years ago
If she really wants minimal effort, A&P liquor is the way to go. NEBCO production is way down right now due to them replacing their brewhouse system so she may struggle. If she's nominal motivated and not intimidated by getting growlers, then Beer'd is a must. It is about a 10 minute drive from Mystic Center.
I lived in Mystic for a bit, great town and I'm sure your mum will have a great time. Before we get to beer, tell her a local recommends Pizzetta for casual, Engine Room for casualish, Oyster Club for upscale, and Ancient Mariner for the in-between. Tons of great restaurants there, Captain Daniel Packer Inn is very good as well. If she'll be there Sunday morning, get brunch at The Engine Room. There is no other equal for brunch. Pastrami Hash... oh yes... pastrami hash. Or the Hangover Burger. And a bloody mary with candied bacon and soupy. Reservations are recommended for most places... even though it's getting a bit late in the year. Moving on. Assuming she'll be in downtown, A&P is the best bottle shop in that immediate area. They're not really local focused, but the selection is good. Cask & Keg across the street from the aquarium sometimes has some decent finds as well, they usually have at least Sea Hag and some other CT-brewed options. That said, NEBCO has been very hard to get lately... as mentioned above. If she leaves Mystic, then Westerly is a great visit. Tell her to grab lunch at Malted Barley and have a roast beef sandwich on a pretzel roll then take a stroll through Wilcox Park, and while she's in the area, stop by Grey Sail maybe a tenth of a mile down the road. Because, Captain's Daughter. Beer'd is making amazing beer, but it's a little out of the way... in an industrial building without much else going on. Not a bad area, in the least, but it's just kind of out of the way. It's not a bad stop if she's heading down to Stonington Borough for a seafood joint like Dog Watch or something. If she wants to sample some Beer'd herself, Pizzetta in Mystic has a designated Beer'd tap. And the Pizza is damn good too. If your mum likes Mexican food, send her to "Manana" in Groton. Way under the radar, but the food is crazy good. Not your typical Mexican joint. And stop at Outer Light Brewing a mile down the road for a growler while you're there. IPA is top notch, coffee stout is the bees knees, rotating beers are all solid. Oh, and only tourists without tastebuds enjoy Mystic Pizza. Oh and also the owner I think is in prison for tax evasion. Take a picture in front of the sign and move on to better food. Just thought I'd throw that out there. Tell her to keep an eye out for Lawson's as well. It's a longshot, but I've been surprised to find cans in strange places.
Thanks for all the help! She doesn't know anything about beer so she only bought me what I sent her a picture of (Sip of Sunshine), which I won't complain about! I think she kind of ignored the other beers I mentioned. But now I have 12 SoS's & a 12 pack of some local IPA she tried while there. I know she went to A&P for at least some of that. Thanks again!
