Alright, so I had to to a NBS follow up because I was blown away by Stone's Odd Year Chai Tea RIS variant. Now, I love chai tea do was was already optimistic about this one. Wow, it did not disappoint. Right off the bat you get that spiced aroma. The taste follows the nose. So chai-like and coupled with alcohol it's quite unique. This one is a home run. Very happy to have a great Stone entry following the lackluster pale ale 2.0.

@Greywulfken, thanks for being an excellent substitute host.
This has been a great weekend. Two rounds of halfway-decent golf, movie and dinner with my wife, and lunch with my sister and brother-in-law today. The movie we saw was Pitch Perfect 2. Not much plot, but some excellent singing and choreography. We hadn't seen my sister and her husband for four months, since they winter in Florida and we stay in the frigid, snowy north. Really happy to see them again. Any guy with a little sister can remember what a pain in the ass they are when young. And my sister was, too. We've been great friends for the past 40 years.

Now, on to the beer. I chose Piraat Triple Hop.
A spectacular looking beer. Amber color, huge head with a lot of carbonation.. There is a good amount of lacing.
Aroma was funky, spicey, and piney.
A resiney pine taste, some onion, and a bit of spice. There was a very strong malt ibackground.
Medium-bodied, insanely carbonated. 10.5% ABV very well hidden.
    Good, almost great, beer.

Liking the New [whole] Brewery Sunday by @Greywulfken.

Got to do a little walk to test out the calf, as I might give it a go in the next game. Can walk fine but calf seems "weak", and I still need to test some controlled sudden movements. Luckily I went early, seeing how the sweat built on the outside of this beer fast.

Was just going to enjoy the posts since my GF is out of town, but seeing all the good beers made me do a little search. The interesting new stuff will have to wait, luckily none are IPAs except a Fat Heads that we had during the week (and suffered a bit from age, as do I). However, I did forget I had a beer she wouldn't be too into, and we might be able to grab again. It's Andechser Dopplebock Dunkel.

The beer isn't quite as dark as it looks in the post due to flash - but the photo result isn't as bad as I thought. Lots of caramel and brown sugar sweetness in the nose and taste. Nose also has a hint of smoke that I don't get in the taste, where a do get a hint of burnt sugar though, also dark fruit like fig, maybe a hint of ginger (without the heat). Although the carbonation is visible in the head, the beer tastes almost flat. Getting past the sweeter front yields a decent flavored, but still malty beer. However, overall I am underwhelmed. Cheers all!

Hope everyone is having a wonderful NBS.

Had a few quick tasks to take care of today - I went out into a humid Chicago afternoon to pick up some items at the local outdoor Farmers Market. Going there at 2pm was my mistake really, and after considering how busy it was and how picked over the vendors tables were I dived straight in for some spinach and herbs for dinner and hot footed it out of there.

On the way back I dropped into one of the local stores to pick something new and contribute here.

Today's choice is a new collaboration beer from Revolution Brewing and Wicked Weed. As we don't have Wicked Weed distro in these parts I thought this might be an intriguing pick.

This beer is tagged as a double red rye ale. The caramel color is striking here - with a decent sized off white head. The body on this ale reveals a thick syrupy body during the pour. Indeed, there is a sticky viscosity here and an english toffee sweetness playing off against the slightly spicy notes from the rye. After a while the head dissipates to nothing and there is no lacing apparent. Definitely a chewiness as it warms too. This goes down easily for a 9% offering, despite the stickiness. I'm not detecting any of the 'citrus' or 'floral' notes that their blurb offers up although a slightly herbal/medicinal side comes through for me here.

Overall, I am quite pleased with my selection here. This is a unique style that brings together a lot of the things that I enjoy in a red or brown ale.

Settling in for the rest of the day to find out if the Blackhawks can make a late comeback and seeing if I can make time to finish off watching Mad Men and/or avoid spoilers.

Happy Sunday. Trying a Wild Heaven Height of Civilization. Quite a brew.
    Here's my take:
look: Dark mahogany. Full tan head on the pour that sticks around.
smell: Rich cocoa that must be the nibs rehydrated in 4 Roses. Fruit presence I suppose courtesy of the dried Prussian lemons, cherry's and cranberries. A hint of booze that must be the Dulce Vida Tequila barrel treatment. Quite a nose i mean.
taste: Not quite as rich as the nose. Similar profile but the flavors are more blended and subtle.
overall: Interesting well crafted beer. Surprisingly drinkable. Would never guess this is 12%.

Moving on to my second new brew of the day, and I wanted something a touch heavier than the Sixpoint Jammer Gose.

Sierra Nevada / Boulevard Terra Incognita barrel aged strong ale
(Brown ale base, 55% aged in red wine barrels, and 32% aged in bourbon barrels)

First off, it's a beautiful brew: clear brown on the pour, very dark brown in the glass, topped by a large head with fantastic retention.

Red grapes and wine are most prominent on the nose, but they are quickly followed by bourbon, caramel, and a surprising touch of piney and citrusy hops.

Flavor is rather pleasant; the relatively mild brown ale base provides a very solid malt foundation of caramel and toffee, the bourbon provides a sweet kiss up front (and a lingering caress on the back third), and the red wine provides a sharp tartness that laces throughout. Hop flavor is very subdued, but the hops do add a distinct bitterness.

This comes in somewhere between an old ale and a barleywine when it's all said and done, and it's very, very tasty.

Wow, I am apparently being very, very generous today! Maybe I'm a sucker for that red wine barrel character on this brew, or maybe beer just tastes better after I had to take such a long break.

    Cheers, NBSers!

What's up NBS players. Beauty of a day here on the island with a real summer feel. Spent the day doing yard work, shooting hoops, and in and out of another mets victory. Now I'm settling in for some beers and grilling.

My new beer today is Big Ugly, a Scottish ale, from Blue Point. I'm a definite homer when it comes to blue point despite the bud buy out but I really don't care. I still attribute my love of craft beer largely to these guys and I drank toasted lager by the case in my early 20's. Anyway, got this out of a multipack and it has a bottle date of 3/23/15.

The beer pours a deep amber/copper color with good clarity. The nose is pretty tame with sweet malts. The first sip goes down sweet and malty. Very smooth with a crisp finish. Lots of sweet tones of caramel, candied fruits, and that distinct scotch flavor.

Overall a pretty standard ale. It's good but nothing game changing. It makes a nice break from all the hops and I really hope they barrel age it. I'm in the mid 3's all around,

    Happy NBS:
Currently Enjoying a nice cold beer while watching the Penguins of Madagascar with the kids.

    Boddington Pub Ale
Appearance: copper color, very slight haze, nice head throughout 4.5
Aroma: smells immediately like english yeast esters, with a light malty/biscuit smell 4
Taste: Unfortunaty its weakest point, which is only the most important part of a beer. A sweet bready taste, with light fruity ester flavors in the middle. Finishes with a harsh flavor (almost skunkish flavor). The finished flavor lingers and is not desirable. 1.75
Feel: The best part, lightly carbed and creamy. 4.75
Overall: A nice session beer with enough going on to keep you interested for a couple. However, it could use a little more compexity and comes up a little short in that department 2.25

    My last NB for today

After spending 21+ years around jet noise, I hope that Jet Noise from Young Veterans Brewery hits the mark.

Nose is immediately sour and grassy, but not in a good way. Taste is grassy and for God knows why, a hint of coconut? ?? What the he'll is that?? Weird. Settles down to just too hot on the finish.

If there were a brewery that I'd want to unconditionally back, this would be one but I can't give a free pass for a not so great product.

Turned into a lovely evening here in North of Boston. The smell of grilling is filling the air, and there is a pack of kids running around our Dead End neighborhood. After finishing my awesome double dry hop pale ale (see earlier post) Ive moved on to a RIS aged in Bourbon barrels. Cease & Desist by Brouwerij De Molen from Denmark. Pour is thick black with little head. I can smell the bourbon right out the bottle. The base beer has very little bitterness and the bourbon adds a nice sweet burn. Im glad I didn't age this one as it is tasting great right now. Good evening NBSers snd to those in the midwest, I hope no dangerous storms come thru.

Good evening, BAs.... Just got back to Charlotte from a whirlwind trip to my Dad's place in Tennessee, so I'm afraid I didn't have the opportunity to purchase anything new for this week. Evening, BAs! Despite the late start, I'm back with a third new brew for the evening. I've been sitting on this one for over a year before I finally decided to crack it open: Dogfish Head Midas Touch.

Paired with some horseradish cheddar (hidden behind the glass).

It ain't pretty; hazy and filled with floaties. The aroma is pleasant enough, but extremely mild and subdued.

But...we really care about how beer tastes, right? And this tastes pretty damn good! It's quite sweet, with honey and jasmine up front, and a big, sweet kiss of white grapes on the back half. It's extremely smooth and drinkable for 9% ABV.

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/64/1587/?ba=Roguer
    3.58 / -4%

Ahh, that rDev is more like it. It lost major marks for appearance, and to a lesser extent, aroma. It's pretty tasty, though.

    Cheers, NBSers!
