Thanks to @lordofthewiens for getting this weeks NBS to a great start. It was not long awaited in my book. Should be back later on today with a new brew.

    Cheers!

Today I awoke groggily to this:

The beast!! And he is growling at me!!!! (or is that purring)

Oh no!! He's going to consume my face!!!! (or lick my forehead)

Ohhhhh... shit! Dogs have mated with cats, that has to be a sign of something, right??

Maybe it's a sign of this beer, the satanic spawn of a Belgian Golden Ale and a bourbon barrel. It hails from one corner of the "Evil Empire," so I am fearful of how this will go:

The Wicked [Weed] Devilwood comes at me as I look into his even darker than expected soul. He stares at me wildly, his eyes clouding over slightly. I thought he might be more level-headed after arising from his wooden tomb, though he doesn't completely lose his head.

Expecting more char and brimstone, I am actually surprised my mind is led to orchard fruit with a bit of syrup. This may be a devil's disguise, so I am wary. The warmth of alcohol is sensed before it is actually felt as he falls upon me. He seems to be trying to sour my outlook a bit after hitting me with a little does of heat. I fight off his advances, parrying the apple, pear, wood, and vanilla he throws at me (who knew the final battle would be a food fight).

The battle ends with me coming through slightly damaged, but not injured. Devilwood fought deftly, but his initial sweetness was hard for him to overcome. With a slightly different tactic, he may have had my soul.

    ...

But wait, what's that behind the battle?? It's the Duvel, incarnate. That first test was just a pretender to the throne. Even though I have fought the Duvel off my right shoulder before, I realized (in responding to the thread How many of the most popular beers have you had?) I had never done real battle with this foe.

He entices me with heavenly clouds of stark white mountains. Definitely more bitter than his minion that came before, I feel he is sucking me into his folds. His wings spread wide and he forces a taste of what he is offering. Eternal hell? If it tantalizes my senses like this, I may not be able to resist. My body lightens, as if being carried by tiny bubbles up, up, up...

Wait, this isn't up! It's a trick. But I am now caught by the bines of the Duvel's reach. I am delving deeper into the depths, I may be lost. If you don't hear from me again today, know that, at least at this point in time, I feel it was worth the deal I made.

Happy Demonic New Beer Sunday (Week 666)!

I scoured my cellar all week to try and find something for today that would be both NEW & devilish, but I was only slightly fruitful. I thought about Duvel; 668 Neighbor of the Beast and Rapscallion, but none fit the bill. I finally said, "The Helles with it!" & decided to partake of some Voodoo, which may or may not be the work of the devil.

I'll try to get in some other deviltry later, but this afternoon is earmarked to see "Murder on the Orient Express" with my uncle. I think that it is another unenlightened theatre that does not sell B.O.P. 8=(

On another site, we have been doing Tom Swifties - puns based on adverbs, inspired by the Tom Swifty series of childrens' books from a bygone era in which EVERY action was modified by an adverb. Thanks for the inspiration!

"I'd like some mead," Tom said groggily.

I had difficulty finding an appropriate beer for NBS #666, finally settling on this. The name is fits the theme, but the little mouse is more cute than terrifying. In any event, I am drinking Mr Mistofelees from Moon Dog Brewing. It has been retired, according to Beer Advocate.

It poured a hazy gold color with a small, almost non-existent, white head.
Aroma of sweet fruit and funk.
Taste of mango and passionfruit. Some late citrus. Faint hops.
    Lightly tart.
Nice enough beer, probably not meant for a cold late fall day.

You def. sent this beast to the right guy. Strong flavored foods and drinks usually leave me thinking that they could be even stronger to my taste. Not so this beer, that's for sure! Thanks again for this. Cheers!

    Poured into a Duvel glass.

The beer is a dark reddish-brown color and completely opaque. A frothy, tan seasudsy head sits on top and breaks down into large foamy patches while thick blankets of foam lacing stick to the glass.

Aromas of red wood, cedar, pine dominate with a spicy hop note not unlike white pepper.

The taste is just as woody as the aroma with added flavors of charred dark bread and more prominent tangy hops in the finish. The finish is very sharp with subtle notes of lime citrus.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied and very dry, sharp.

Overall, a bit too much wood and nothing to really balance it out, a soft caramel note would help.

Happy New Beer Sunday everyone! Although I wasn't able to find a beer with a name to fit the theme, I was able to find a beer with a frightening concept! Today I am drinking a 10%ABV Weizenbock from Weyerbacher called "Brau Heist":

The apperance is a dark brown color with an off-white, cola colored head.

The aroma is sweet malts, alcohol, over-ripened bananas, dark fruits and some creaminess from the yeast.

The taste is a mix of all of the flavors I picked up in the aroma. What's interesting is that they all seemed to be mixed together, instead of tasting particular things in the immediate and after taste. The most prominent flavors are the over-ripened bananas and the sweet malts. The alcohol is well hidden and is only noticeable with a slight warmth that makes it way down the throat.

The mouthfeel is quite full and the carbonation is low. It almost feels a bit oily.

Overall it's is an interesting beer. If I had to compare it to something I would say that it reminds me of a mix of the Schneiderweiße Aventinus and their Eisbock. The alcohol is well hidden and the beer is drinkable, but quite heavy. In any case I'm glad to have been able to try a new beer this Sunday and hope that all the rest of you are able to enjoy a new beer on this fine Sunday as well!

Good morning from the sunny but frosty southern shore. It was a brisk dog walk at sunrise, but there were some pastel colors in the sky that warmed the heart. A tip of the cap to @lordofthewiens for starting the fire on the 666 edition of NBS. I pretty much figured out a long time ago what beer would be consumed for the satanic ritual. Let the ceremony begin!

I ticked this beer back in 2013, so while not really new, I've come a long way since then in doing full reviews and being a bit of a harsher critic. I'm revisiting a Surly Darkness bomber from 2013 that has been refrigerated since purchase. It appropriately has the Brewcifer label and I can't locate any abv. hidden in the satanic artwork. Let's bravely explore the dark depths of despair and pour this in a theme appropriate @LeperJim favorite Duvel to find what awaits us......?

It pours a dark oily brown generating a thick finger of light brown foam that hangs around. It eventually settles to a thick ring with no lacing present. The smell is bakers chocolate, figs, dates, roasted malt and mild char. Taste is semi sweet dark chocolate, anise, black licorice, dates, figs, tobacco, leather and roasted malt. The feel is thick and oily like a stout should be.

The judgment? It still tastes great and has withstood the test of time. I'm dialing my original ticked score of 4.75 back because quite frankly I'm a much more seasoned reviewer and rate very few that high anymore. For comparison sake, I've had some cellared Stone IRS bottles that I preferred a little more. All said, my score is 4.44 / rDev-0.9%. It's a little scary that my revised score came in as a 444. Perhaps the son of Satan?

Time to take the remaining contents outside to find some light and do a little Christmas decorating. Enjoy your day of new beer and exploring the darkness if you're so inclined. Here's a pic from sunrise to light the way.

    And lastly the official scorecard.....

Pours dark in color with a large fluffed tan colored head that sticks around.
Aroma is dark chocolate, light roast, and a general sugar sweetness.
The flavor is dark chocolate light roast, tons of sweetness and a mild bitter finish.
The mouthfeel is way too thin with limited carbonation. It's so drinkable and goes down smooth, but I would prefer it to be thicker and more coating.
Overall, it's good if you're looking to session a stout, but I prefer bigger stouts.

This was one of the many beers I saw that I could not use today, as they weren't new (even the Duvel was a surprise and huge stretch, so I had to include it with another). This one I didn't enjoy too well, but found it strangely medium-fruit sweet in a way I couldn't explain well. I'm not a huge amber fan, so I doubt I'll revisit to try to figure it out.

Another option from AleSmith was Horny Devil, which I had also had and apparently enjoyed much more (than I even recalled - good thing there's a database for these things :grinning:). Might need to revisit Horny Devil (that sounds bad, I know).

I saved this beer for this occasion. This is my first NBS post.
    Look-Very dark, reddish/black.
    Smell-Dark fruit, toffee, and alcohol.
Taste-Dark fruit, molasses, maple syrup, honey, and sugar.
Feel-Minimal carbonation, syrupy, full-bodied, and smooth.
Overall-This is a complex and delicious beer. I am glad I have another one to enjoy, which I will save for another occasion such as this. I believe very strongly that this beer is best experienced while listening to extreme heavy metal, jazz, or Enya.

Happy Sunday, NBS crew! Have you heard of the legendary "Battle Creek Massacre"? Supposedly there was a showdown between hordes of demons and zombies. They were fighting over who gets to eat the humans first. I believe the demons won, but need to wait until the next apocalypse to verify this.

    Now that I'm on theme...:stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks @vabeerguy for this lovely brew!

    Triple Crossing - Battle Creek

L - 2-finger bright white heads recedes slowly and evenly, leaving only a trace of lacing. Body is light orange.

S - tropical! Strong grapefruit, candied orange. No booze in the nose. Very inviting.

T - Like getting smashed in the mouth with a peeled grapefruit. So damn juicy. Slightly bitter at the end.

F - medium-full body. Lower carb. Incredibly smooth.

O - this is why I love Triple Crossing. They know how to make a NE IPA that is smooth and juicy, yet still has some bitterness to keep things interesting.

Good morning BA's and happy NBS666! Thanks to the "legends" that filled page 1 with information! I usually stick to the WBAYDN because I don't feel intelligent enough to describe the great beer I'm fortunate to try. Anyway, chuckle at the below if you feel the need, I tried! As with listening vs. talking, I learn a ton more from you folks by reading than I offer by typing...

Look: Slight haze and golden yellow-orangish in color.

Smell: Pretty mild to my nose, light pine with a bit of citrus.

Taste: I like it, to me lighter than an 8% beer.

Feel: Kind of plain, not smoooth or silky to me, more "just a liquid".

Overall: I'm enjoying it, maybe it's me but I could drink this one quite fast from a glass.

Going straight to the big guns for New Brew Number Two: purchased Friday, this is Funky Buddha's 2017 Living Barrel series bourbon barrel aged Morning Wood.

If you've had anything of the sort from FB, you know what you're getting: a super sweet, huge, boozy beer full of incredible flavor.

Except, this one is a touch different. It's less sweet than Wide Awake, It's Morning, and less interesting perhaps than Maple Bacon Coffee Porter. However, none of that means it's anything less than a wonderful beer, especially for maple syrup fans.

I'd say more, but my review probably has all you need to know, so I'll simply steal the meat from my own review:

"Maple is noticeable from across the room. Up close, the sweet bourbon and maple blend together with brown sugar, coffee, caramel, dark fruit, and toffee almost indistinguishably. Very sweet, and very inviting.

Flavor follows. It's somehow tamer than Wide Awake, It's Morning, although there's no denying this is a sweet dessert stout. Bourbon gives you a sweet kiss up front, building quickly with notes of mash, coconut, oak, and vanilla, before grudgingly yielding to maple syrup, roast, coffee, and caramel. Maple is dominant in the middle, but the bourbon refuses to fade completely. Back end is almost dull in woodiness, maintaining some roast and coffee while the quick-fire sugars fade. Aftertaste is liquor, oak, and grainy brown sugar.

There's no indication this brew even approaches 13% ABV. It's big, thick, sweet, and sticky, but the only heat is a liquor-like burn from exhalation long after the beer has passed down your throat. The only thing keeping this thing from being dangerously drinkable is the sweet-and-sticky flavor, which tends to force you to slow down, smacking and licking your lips to get every touch of flavor.

Not sure I'm completely onboard the hype train on this one, but I'm at the very least admiring it while standing on the platform, and I'm thinking long and hard about purchasing a ticket. Despite being supremely sweet, it's less so than other maple brews I've had from FB; despite being BBA, it's restrained and smooth; despite having a ton of adjuncts, it's somehow lacking a touch in depth and complexity. Some of these work in its favor; others, not."

Strawberry Milkshake from Kindred Spirit courtesy of @vabeerguy. Pours a slightly cloudy gold with red hues, no head at all. Really smells like a strawberry milkshake, with sweet malts in the background. Taste is dominated by ultra sweet strawberries but not artificially so and some malt. Light bodied, thin mouth feel and minimal carbonation.
