I don't think I've hit 18 miles this week combined. I ran two 10 milers in my fading past, and realized as I ran those that they were too long. - not solely in the sense of physical exertion, but also in the sense of getting boring around mile 8 or so. I think if I do get in shape and want to do a race, a 10k is about the right length for me.

And congrats on surviving the great outdoors, @VABA

    Good day, NBS brethren!

It is a lovely day here on the island and I'm looking forward to the kind of Sunday I haven't had in months. It is a nice temperature, there's world-class soccer on, weekend chores are accomplished, I have everything prepped to brew a beer later on (if I want to by then) and all that is because I am not working every Sunday any more. I can't really complain, as my weekend job is giving brewery tours and is basically a dream job, but all that interaction with the public leaves me burned out afterwards, and even though I don't drink very much while I'm there, I am usually kind of fatigued by the time I get home. I'll still be working Sundays on occasion but for this week at least, it is nice to be able to dedicate my energies to a new beer in my glass instead of a new beer in someone else's. Anyway....

I have a decent crop of new-to-me IPAs from Maine in my fridge. All care of an always-generous Canadian BA that just got back from vacation. I will be digging into those for the next few days probably and will be doing my best to remember the cook in me and practice FIFO as much as possible. Therefore I'm going to start off with this "Experimental IPA" from Battery Steele Brewing. It's hopped with Citra and Vic Secret. It is a little over three weeks old which (for me at least) is a real sweet spot with a lot of IPAs so we shall see if this one is any different.

It pours turgid as could be with a little ivory head that disappears pretty quickly. The aroma is present at arm's length outside upon opening to can. Ripe tropical fruit-citrus melange. The flavor is similar but with mainly citrus oil and hop sap flavors up front and the sweeter, tastier flavors behind.

I have never had or heard of this brewery before receiving this beer and now I am definitely curious to try more. This is a very tasty beer that I'd gladly sample again if I had the chance. Thanks, J Dilla!:beers:

Here's my full review for the curious.

    À votre santé!

EDIT: LOL I just realized I wrote "turgid" instead of "turbid" and I'm leaving it.

Call me stupid, but I am following up a 11% and 13% beers with a 15% beer. What the heck! This is Inverno from In Peccatum from Spain. Poured from fridge temp into a snifter. Pours a light brown with almost no head. Nice bubble formation throughout. Nose is dominated by dark fruit - cherries, blackberries mostly. Rye is definitely present. Sweet candy and a lot of smoke comes through. The taste is really powerful, which isn't surprising at 15% ABV. Definitely burns a bit going down. A nice sipper. A lot of rye and smoke, with some figs and cherries coming through. A bit syrupy, and a good earthy presence. Mouthfeel is dense and robust. Overall, a really nice rye ale.

L-The beer pours a dark brown to black with a 3 finger tan head. The head recedes t a thick film leaving spotty lacing in it's wake. A great pour right up until the bottle took a huge dump in my glass with what I have to hope is chocolate or residual marshmallow. The residual head looks like when you put powdered Quik in your milk and it clumps up on top. Pray for me...
S- The nose is up front with huge chocolate and sweet marshmallow. Behind all of that is a fairly strong alcohol presence.
T-As expected the taste follows the nose with big time chocolate which wavers between sweet milk and bitter dark chocolate. Overall it leans to the sweet side due to the marshmallow. This one is dessert stout without a doubt.
F-Mouthfeel is on the lighter side of medium and carbonation after the initial pour is very light.
O- The beer delivers on it's promise of huge chocolate. Unfortunately it suffers for this in the appearance which was decidedly off putting after the initial pour. Its not a bad beer if your can get past the appearance, but is decidedly too sweet to be anything but a nightcap dessert beer.

Well, time to actually chime in with a beer as the World Cup Finals get started. My beer comes from across the pond in Europe, where the two participants in the game hail from. Well, specifically this beer is from a country situated somewhat between France and Croatia (at least longitudinally) - Germany.

My friend @pretzyl04 lugged this home from a trip there and surprised me with it. He had not tried this beer - labeled Stout Beer (1722) and Imperial Porter on the label. I do not see this beer in the database, although there are two Porters with the same ABV as this by the same brewer. Perhaps someone can clarify if this is a new beer, or if it is renamed here in the states (perhaps for copyright reasons).

As the beer from Klosterbrauerei Neuzelle streamed from the bottle, it showed as a clear, medium light brown liquid. The beige to light tan head was not shy once the liquid hit the glass. The orb of the glass transformed the lighter brown color to a medium dark mass, atop which the creamy head sat and slowly faded. The glass became gilded with a thin beige film as I drank the beer down.

Nose has a lightly wooden aspect to a medium to dark toasted malt smell. Pretty straightforward, I'm expecting a bit of a burnt roasted note in the taste, maybe leaning a little to the bitter side from the near charred aspect.

Opening of the beer has a little surprising feel on the tongue - brought on by a higher than expected carbonation level that stings ever so slightly with micro needle feel. A light charred malt flavor adds to the effect slightly. The feel prevents too much nuance until about mid taste where the tingle falls off. A dark toasted wheat/grain bread comes on with a medium roast coffee flavor as well. Moderately bitter, seeming more from the malt treatment than hops, the beer does finish fairly clean with just a light wooden bitterness lingering.

There is a light body to this, but that carbonation hides it initially. My first few sips, I was thinking it was more like too weak coffee. As I sipped, I started liking it a little more. It is more like an English roasty porter than an American stout, per my impressions of the styles. If I can decide which beer in the database to rate, I'd probably have this around a 3.8 or so.

Happy New Against the Saugatuck Grain Beer Sunday (Week 699)!

Exercise?!? Not for me, thanks! I spent too many years whipping myself into shape in the Navy that I am paying for it now. That said, I do not drive, so I get plenty of walking in.

This week's endeavor is partially inspired by someone last Sunday who was drinking Saugatuck's Neapolitan & it got me to thinking. Never a good thing, but then my New New Holland Beer Sunday (Week 698) began to catch up to/with me & I had to curtail my activities. My first one is something rather light, from a CAN:

    The CAN reminds me of:

& we are going to try making one next weekend during the monthly Bottle/CAN share.

I may not be a part of next week as my friend wants to come to Lancaster for a visit after the get-together & we are going to be tooling around on Sunday.

I’ve taken a 5 month break and a 2 month break in the last two years. It’s difficult but once I get used to it I see the rewards. I’m about to take another long break, so I won’t be around BA here in the near future.

Hardest part of the gym is getting there.I prefer to do it in the morning myself, way too much can happen that will prevent me from doing it later. Be already worked a few hours today as well as hot the gym so I'm ready for new beer Sunday

    Cape may always ready
    ..cloudy orange/gold color
    ..slightly thin body, medium carbonation
    ..aroma is citrus,bitter grapefruit,
..taste grapefruit, lemon, citrus at first but quickly turns bitter. The sharp bitterness ends up dominating and heavily lingers.
...Overall, tasty, decent feel, but the sharp lingering bitterness ends up being the only thing I could taste after a while[IMG]

Start of my family vacation, always schedule brewery stops for dad! I’ll make this short.
    First stop is Old Nation
    [IMG]
Today’s first new beer is Greenstone NEAPA

16 ounce on draft, directly from the Brewery. Poured into English pint. Pours a hazy, dull golden. Minimal head I observed. A small amount of lacing. Grapefruit, pine and grassy bitterness on the nose. Grapefruit, tropical fruit, floral notes, grass. End of the tastes are pine, pepper, and just a touch of dank. Tons of flavors. The body feels a touch thin but wel carbonated. Another winner from Old Nation.

    Be back later!

New Beer Sunday: A Belgian Strong Pale Ale

    Afternoon NBSers,

Thinking about this morning's opening and about hitting the gym in the morning (which I didn’t get to do today :slight_frown:), I’m a long time fan of doing the exercise before starting the working day. But the best, most productive routine for me that I ever found was when I was working in an office near a gym with a pool. In those days my routine was a nice early start at work with a focused and solid, almost uninterrupted, morning of work. Then it was off to the pool for a half hour or so (sometimes with a side visit to the Sauna thrown in). After that I’d have a light lunch from a favorite food truck and the go back to work for the afternoon. It helped that I had two different types of things that needed doing so I could concentrate on doing only one set of things in the morning and then focus on the other set in the afternoon.

Well that “Thunderstorm in the area” came right into this small neighborhood area and was dropping lots of liquid for a while. Fortunately the “heavy lifting” part of the morning was pretty much over so the thunder, lightening and rain became a good reason to stop for lunch (and another new beer ). This afternoon’s new beer is the Devil’s Reach from Cape May Brewing.

As usual, my review, subject to revision until the beer is finished, can be found here:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/25890/96564/?ba=drtth#review

The Aromas/Flavors of this beer fit nicely with my expectations for a BSPA, there’s some green orchard fruits, a bit of orange, some Belgian yeast and some nice earthy bitterness. The background has some spice and white pepper and the ABV is just high enough to be felt from its spreading warmth. A beer I’ve enjoyed, one I can recommend as being worth trying and one I’d like to have in a side-by-side with a comparably fresh Duvel, my gold standard BSPA. Once again Cape May Brewing has moved up a few notches on my list of breweries doing beers that are worth drinking and even buying “sight unseen.”

    Cheers, all!

Lucky to be so close to HotD, yes, despite what my better half and wallet think. The thing about them which I love is that they are not a brewery for the masses, but have a small, die hard faithful following of supporters. Cheers!

Totally agree. I love visiting them when in Portland, and it's crazy that you can't even find their beers at local shops (at least I couldn't when I was there). They maintain their unique styles, and I really can't think of anyone who has done something similar.

    ..Clear amber color
..medium body with just below average carbonation
..aroma is slightly sour, cereal, malt and a bit of a floral smell
..taste is similar, not sweet but far from any hop bitterness
..Overall it isn't super complex but it works well for what it is..a decent summer beer thats perfect while grilling on the patio[IMG]
