.. solid black motor oil appearance
...light carbonation with an above average body. Has a bit of a smooth, slick, oily feel
    .. aroma is espresso, roasted malt,black coffee, bourbon,alcohol, and a little wood/earthy
...taste is mildly sweet,coffee/espresso is there and equally balanced with bourbon and roasted malt
Overall it was one of their best to me as it came off smooth and incredibly easy to get down.high abv is fairly well hidden and not one flavor element overpowered.[IMG]

I looked back at my reviews and the descriptions are very close. A Helles is a helles after all. Don't get me started on additional ingredients or flavors:rolling_eyes:!
I scored the Alpenflo a 4.39 vs. a 4.34 for the Paulaner. My Alpenflo was extremely fresh (23 days old) and that could have been the difference. I tend to have high rDev for all lagers.

Next up, starting the theme of New Brown Sunday for me. From @Dragginballs76 again.

    Beer: Rye Knot
Brewery: Coast Brewing (North Charleston, SC)
    ABV: 6.2%

Pouring from a 12 oz. can into a whiskey tumbler glass, this beer pours out darker than your average brown ale. It’s a very dark brown, hardly showing highlights. It forms one finger worth of very tightly packed, well held, peanut butter fudge colored crown. Almost porter like, but I love the crown and retention and it has nice lacing throughout. 4.25

The nose carries a mild, but silky milk chocolate with a spicy kick of rye underneath it for the whole ryed. (pun) Slight toffee and caramel notes as well. 3.75

The taste offers the milk chocolate again with the rye that isn’t too intense, but this has nice toasted bread layers. Honey black bread, toasted caramel and toffee finish. 3.5

The rye isn’t too intense in the mouthfeel either, while it does show its presence with a mild kick. Creamy, smooth, well carbonated and if we’re talking browns, which we are, full bodied. Very little bitterness and ABV not showing. 4.25

Overall, this isn’t really lacking anything and is a solid beer that has the edges rounded out. I would like a little more rye pronunciation myself though. 3.75

    Cheers NBS!

Great thread as always, just catching up to speed.

Found some Modern Times at Trader Joe’s that’s reasonably fresh, 9 weeks old vs usual 8-9 months old at TW.

So MT Hoppy Juicy IPA, 7.6 abv they use mosaic, motueka and experimental hop 07270. Malt is white wheat, two row and caravienna.

Pours nice, golden, nice head, great retention, moderate fruit on the nose. Mosaic and the wheat are the stars here, that hop is pronounced with nothing catty at all, wheat is light and a bit fruity in combo. Very soft on the palate, moderate bitterness, I don’t get a fruit bomb here, but I get hard pineapple predominately. Terrific finish that lasts forever l think it’s the mosaic that’s sticking around.

Modern Times would be a more often kinda buy if it wasn’t always old as hell. Love their beers but sorry no, locals are over 8 months old usually. At two months old or so I’d say it’s a buy.

Good afternoon NBS and thanks @cjgiant , for the start up today. Seems like spring has arrived here in WMass, the annual 3' band of road sand and salt runs across the front yard. So yard work will soon be in order.
Today's offering is from The Alchemist, the barrel aged version of their very good Luscious stout.
    Cheers all

A - The deepest of colors, Chalkboard dark, Mocha cap resides through the experience. Carbonation rides the inside edge of the glass, feeding the cap.
S - Dark malts, cocoa, black cherry, cigar wrap tobacco.
T - All the nose and blackberry, bakers chocolate, the barrel adds a vanilla component.
M - Silky on the palate, steady with no real sweet or bitter thread. Perfectly balanced
O - A very good Stout, with extraordinary texture. The name is certainly apropos

The beer is described as a Belgian hoppy beer. There are slight hop hints, some slight citrus fruity hints and very very slight Belgian yeast hints. Overall, it is not a bad beer, I give them credit for trying something somewhat unique, but it is not a great beer. Certainly worth trying though as you won’t be dissapointed.

I usually tend to as well. I attribute it to trying to rate by style, something that I feel like most (not all) don’t do. And most (not all) don’t really care for lagers.

Got a couple oil changes planned for today, but first gotta have some coffee. This is Autocrat from Naragansett. There’s a nice little story about the relationship between the brewery and Autocrat, which apparently made (makes?) coffee.

Pours medium brown but in the glass it’s more of a cola color. Pretty good amount of light tan head on top that has great retention. A sniff brings dark coffee and roasted malts to the nose. Taste is more of the same. Mouthfeel is creamy silky medium with a dry finish. Overall this is in the low 4s due to my partiality to coffee. Digging it!

New Beer Sunday: Belgian Blonde Ale

Afternoon NBSers with an alert on a beer to watch out for.

This afternoon’s new beer is a new release from Victory called Twisted Monkey. This beer is part of the family of Victory Monkeys.

As usual, my review, subject to revision until the beer is finished, can be found here.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/345/387551/?ba=drtth#review

The aromas/flavors include some light Belgian yeast character, some malt and mango along with a bit of banana and clove in the background. Early on there’s a touch of tartness that gives way to the fruity, spicy malt sweetness that slowly fades away. I thought this beer was worth trying but I’ll be taking a pass on it in the future since I’d prefer a bit more dry bitterness in the ending and not quite so much sweetness throughout.

    Cheers, all!

Other Half Did I Make Myself Clear?

Happy Sunday, BAs. Today’s first new beer comes courtesy of the corrupting influence known as @CanConPhilly.

It pours a hazy orange-bronze color with a half finger of near-white head. For a West Coast IPA with “Clear” in the name, it’s not very clear at all. It does leave really solid lacing, though.

Orange blossom, pine sap and sweet, bready caramel stand out in the nose.

The taste follows. There’s a lot of sweet orange and malt up front, with a borderline hint of fruity tropicality to it, followed by a nice piney, bitter finish.

It’s full bodied and lightly creamy with just enough carbonation fizz cutting through.

I lived in Oregon at the height of the Northwest-style craze. This would have passed as an acceptable IPA then, but would not have really distinguished itself from the crowd.

The malt here goes beyond just a strong backbone into overly-sweet territory and, other than the impressive lacing, the look of the beer is pretty mugly. The fruitiness sort of reminds me of the early New England IPAs (ie, Heady), although not as well crafted and obviously not at all innovative. Still fun to drink. Thanks, Matt. :beers:

Good afternoon, NBS friends and family! I have only two brews on hand for today's NBS, and both are funk-forward offerings. No complaints here.

First up is a relative newcomer to our local brew market, Jester King. JK has long reaped tons of positive praise for their funky and sour wild ales, and while I opted not to grab one of every bottle available, I figured this one, Das Wunderkind!, has been around long enough to warrant being an excellent choice for my very first beer from JK.

Das Wunderkind! is a mixed fermentation farmhouse ale, the result of a blend of new ale and oak-aged ale, along with wild yeast and bacteria.

Every bit of the care that went into brewing and blending this ale comes through in the delivery. It's very light, and even crushable, although it's well worth sipping and savoring. The sourness is very restrained, and a mix of citric acid and vinegar. The funkiness is musty and dusty. Flavor tones include lemon, honey, and peach.

Many wild ales are over the top with sourness, barrel aging, or fruit additives, and there's definitely something positive to be said for that approach. This reminds me more of Hill Farmstead's tack: light, delicate, complex, and a joy to drink.

I think I'm going to go along with the masses on this one:

    The review:
12oz canned 2/18/19 poured into a Taxman snifter at fridge temp 8% ABV 30 IBU per label. The beer pours slightly hazy in a dark amber/light brown color with slowly fading light brown head. The head recedes to an island of tiny bubbles and thin ring. The aroma is tart cherry and cola, but not cherry cola, if that makes sense. There is a brown sugar and bready note as well. The taste is semisweet bready malt and burnt sugar at first with the cherries starting to build mid palate. The finish is mildly tart and mildly bitter. The mouthfeel is medium to thin bodied with average carbonation and a dry finish. Overall, very good. Nicely balanced and drinkable with a range of flavors.

For what it's worth, I enjoyed this more than the Berry Picker version from last fall or the "unenhanced" dubbel Deduction.

    Cheers all!
