Happy Father’s Day to all the Dad’s our there!

Today’s first new beer is courtesy of @Buck89

My second beer from this brewery, the first of which was also courtesy of John. Thanks all the great tasting (and sounding) beers!

    Southern Grist Brewing Company

    Salt on the Rim

Canned on 5/1 in time for Cinco de Mayo

Look: The beer is hazy and translucent. Golden straw in color with an active bone white head that quickly disappears. Constant stream of bubbles rise to the top of the glass. Zero lacing. A nice appearance for the style with inviting, lively carbonation.

Smell: The nose on this beer is huge. A lot of salinity and minerality. Huge lemon and lime citrus and acidity. Lots of green jello. The sweetness that comes along with the zest, and the bright acidity from the juice. Earthy black lime peel. Fresh, bright and earthy all playing nicely together.

Taste: This beer is very tasty. A lot of lemon and lime flavor combined with sweetness and tart acidity, neither dominating. Diluted lime juice, lemon/lime sour gummy candy. The acidity is not too high. And the finish nails the dry, crackery wheat finish I love so much in the style.

Feel: Moderate carbonation, soft, with some gritty pithiness, dry and only slightly puckering.

Overall: A refreshing and tasty beer that nicely resembles the cocktail, as much as a beer could, while still drinking like a beer with some level of complexity. These beers can easily go sideways, but this one does not. I’m glad the beer is not overly acidic or enamel stripping.

Fun and excellent beer across the board.

    New Beer Sunday: American IPA

Afternoon NBSers with a report on a solid drinkable IPA.

This afternoon’s new beer is the Terrapin Up-Hi IPA.

My review can be found here:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/2372/118971/?ba=drtth#review

This is a solid well-made IPA that is all about the Hops, with the aromas/flavors having lots of tropical fruits, orange and citrus, including citric zest. Way in the background there’s just a bit of biscuity and caramel sweetness that just softens but in no way conceals the firm, solid bitterness. On the whole it’s a solid, well-made and flavorful beer that is fairly enjoyable and drinkable. This Is an IPA that one can depend on if looking for that firm solid bitterness that some IPAs have to offer.

    Cheers, all!

Happy Sunday and of course Fathers Day NBS players. A rather breezy summer day, here on the island, with a mix of sun and clouds. Got a rather busy day ahead along with dinner at my parents tonight so I'm probably only gonna be able to do one new beer today. I have also been making more of an effort to actually score/rate beers and managed to crack 100 beers this week. Gonna try and keep at it.

The majority of my drinking is done at home. It's easy and safe with no driving required. I do enjoy hitting the breweries but I tend to limit a visit to one or two beers with plenty of water and food. I love bar/brewery hopping in the city. No driving thanks to mass-transit and can crash at my buddies apt when we're done- although his wife isn't always happy with that.

My new beer today is Hippie Steve, ipa from Bare Hands brewing. Only my second beer from the brewery thanks to @ovaltine who provided them both. The brew checks in at 6.5% abv and no apparent canning date.

A murky off yellowish color on the pour with a fast head of white bubbles. The nose is sweet with tropical fruits. Those notes carry right over to the first few sips with tropical and tangy fruited hop notes upfront. Good tones of mango, tangerine, grape, and lemon. The flow is nice and smooth with a touch of white wine. The finish is equally smooth with minimal bitter and additional notes of subtle pine, resin, and herbal/spicy hops. A moderate mouth feel that drinks soft, dry, and clean. I do get a slight off-flavor/dirt on the finish at times but it's nothing to dominate.

Overall, I'm not in love with it but its decent drinking enough. I will probably be in the high 3's. Thanks once again Mike.

I can totally relate about not checking the dates. First few times I went to a huge beer store I bought some IPAs I was chasing at the time cuz I was so excited. Got home to find they were WAY past the date they should have been consumed by. Hopefully your next beer is better!

My wife did some traveling recently and was able to return with a very good haul for her. She found some big wants for me and I’ll probably have a few today. The first is Scorpius Morchella from Toppling Goliath.

Appearance is standard for the style, an amazing light, bright, yellow golden color with a moderate amount of off white head with a slightly orange tint. Aroma is OJ up front, but replaced quickly by some great tropical fruits, pineapple, mango, all the good ones. A little sweetness in the aroma from the fruits and then on the back end is some sharp hoppy scents which almost feels like hop burn tastes or feels in your mouth. Taste is where this beer shines. Pineapple, mango, sweet tropical fruits, some moderate piney, resinous bitterness, and finishing off with a great hop burn. Mouthfeel is above medium with some great prickly carbonation, just the right amount. Prickly and soft, weird how those two can go together, but the beer is soft at first then as you hold it in your mouth for a few seconds the prickly carbonation appears. Overall this beer is great, following in the line of everything else I’ve had from Toppling Goliath! I’m in the 4.5 range across the board here.

Good afternoon NBS and to all those that are dads, keep doing the right thing by those offspring and enjoy your day. I bottled this falls big Imperial Stout this morning, so now for it to rest and we will see it in October. As for the question about where do I drink. Its mainly at home, second is some local breweries, and lastly a few beer bars, all are a short drive and always with friends.
Today's offering is a smoked malt beer from Norway, and once past the aromatic onslaught, the offering is round, full, smooth and quite delightful.
    Cheers all

    look: 4 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

Poured from a 500 ml bottle marked #309, into the test glass
A - Tawny copper color, steady carbonation feeds a quick to depart cap of off white froth. During the experience the ring clings to the glass wall. No lacing but that constant ring.
S - Well it is 52% smoked malts after all, so the nose is smoke forward. Add some candi sugar, earthy hops, late fall walk in the woods after rain. I also get a dry or candied citrus in there as well.
T - Smoked meat, caramel, a hint of red grape, a fun spicy element as well, like black pepper and a bit of clove and dark cherries. I feel it needs a side of roast potatoes!
M - A bit silky, with a moderate sweetness, that quickly shifts to a nice dry finish.
O - A very good smoked malt beer, the palate adjust to the smoked malts quickly, allowing other features of this beer to rise up. The feel get more slick with temperature increase. This is not for the faint of heart but a really well executed offering.

It seems silly to review Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier Dunkel as a new beer, but it is my first review of it.
Mahogany bottle pour with 2 cm tan head and an aroma of sweet malt and allspice. The flavor is bready malt and caramel with woody hop notes. This is full-bodied and quite pleasant. The flavors persist
    Happy day to all!

So true. My family was here yesterday for a big brunch. My little girl is 38 and doing important legal work, the mother of two sons 9 and 12. My son is 35 and is a chip off the old block selling beer and wine. He brought his new girlfriend, and we hope for a granddaughter. We liked her very much and we are both happy for both of them! Life just seems to move along....

I suppose “historical” could have different meanings for different folks here?

Let’s discuss when those four hops were released:

    · Nugget: 1982

    · Glacier: 2000

    · Willamette: 1971

    · Mt. Hood: 1989

When I homebrew my Classic American Pilsner I use hops that would have been used at the turn of the century (1900): Cluster hops for bittering and Hallertauer Mittelfruh for flavor/aroma. I also use North American 6-row pale malt as a base malt.

This IA beer does not seem to be too “historical” to me.

    Cheers!

Another one that I find fitting for today, and another one that was sent so generously from @TheGent !

    Beer: Moment of Clarity
    Brewery: Tree House
    ABV: 7.7%
    [IMG]
This beer pours out pitch black and forms caramel colored bubbles that disappear as quickly as they generate.

The nose carries maple mixing with coffee and chocolate layers; hugely thick sweetness. This is almost like fresh chocolate chip waffles smothered in warm syrup sitting next to your freshly roasted, hot cup of morning coffee.

The taste follows much in the same way. Thick maple syrup and warm, melted chocolate chips mixing with notes of fresh coffee. Really, once again, reminiscent of chocolate chip waffle or pancakes.

Thick mouthfeel, not the thickest body ever or anything but it does coat the mouth with that sweetness. No astringency on the coffee, just smooth. No ABV burn, but I wouldn’t expect that at 7.7%.

Overall, this is a winner of a breakfast stout. But I will say, I’ve had others like it, too. (quick example that comes to mind is the Untitled Art-Chocolate Vanilla Maple) So while good, very good even, Tree House isn’t the only ones that can do it.

    Corsendonk Pater Dubbel Ale

    Bottled on 1/9/2019

This one is leftover from the Dubbel tasting yesterday, and while I know I’ve had this beer, it was a long time ago and I’ve never rated it on this website. For all intents and purposes it is new to me. On the heels of Westmalle Dubbel and Ommegang Abbey Ale, I want to review this today while the other two are fresh on my mind.

At 6.5% ABV this is slightly lower than the Westmalle and much lower than the Ommegang.

Look: The first thing I notice about this beer as compared to the other two is the dark color. Much darker than the Ommegang, and slightly more than the Westmalle. Opaque very dark brown at the bottom of the goblet, which some translucent brown at the top when held to the light. No visible carbonation. Beige head that dissipates to a thin layer across the top of the beer and a ring around the edge. Some lacing as I drink the beer.

Smell: The other immediate difference between this beer and the other two is the level of dark stone fruit and berry notes on the aroma. I think there is more in this beer. But the malt is also prominent, more like in the Westmalle and much more than the Ommegang. In addition to the plum and blackberry fruity aromas I get coffee, some more roast, tobacco, woody and nutty notes. Some spice as well like cinnamon.

Taste: The flavor profile is amazing here. Waves of different things going on. A ton of dark fruit comes through as figs. I find this flavor to be the prominent one. Wow. Some coffee and chocolate, woody and hazelnut and walnut notes. Overall, semi-dry beer. I thought the Westmalle had some bitterness and I’m not really getting any of that here to speak of. Some spicyness of the finish too.

Feel: Great feel like the others. Prickly carbonation on the tip of the tongue, but overall, a pillowy soft mouthfeel. The beer finishes dry and lingers so on the palate.

Overall: Of the three beers I had for the Dubbel tasting this one is by far my favorite. It happens to the lightest, but with the most flavor. Westmalle second, followed by the Ommegang. The complex flavor profile from the yeast and malt is astounding. I’m happy to have done this tasting and revisited these beers so I can add something “new” to the rotation. I only wish I could find small format bottles, but I’ll drink the 750’s if I’m forced.

Just a quick thanks again to @zid for hosting yesterday. A newfound favorite beer for me as a result.

    A - raspberry and raspberry

O - Flavors are well balanced. Definitely something different and very enjoyable.

    3.87/5 rDev -6.7%
    look: 4.5 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

Midnight black body topped with a lush and creamy head. The smell exudes soft notes of cocoa and hop spiciness. The taste delivers muted notes of cocoa and milk chocolate with hints of grain char; spicy, earthy hop bitterness. The body feels heavy, smooth and velvety; semi-sweet feel overall but with an edge of dryness.

This beer brings some fine roasted grain and spicy hop character to your glass. Balanced with a flavorful punch.

It's good to be back home and hanging out in the 'Fortress of Solitude' on a fine Sunday day. It's the perfect environment to drink beer, smoke stogies and listen to music and 'The Thomas Jefferson Hour' on the radio.

Black Rajah was a beer I recently picked up while visiting Ohio a little over a week ago. It's always a pleasure to return to my home city. There are great places to visit and a decent beer scene. This go around was a bit short on free time, but being able to snag a few regional beers from the Buckeye state kind of makes up for my tight schedule.

Jack’s Abby Maibock Hurts Like Helles.

Been meaning to pick this up for a while and happened to see it a few days ago. Normally I’m too impatient to wait until Sunday to try new beers as I pretty much buy everything in packs. This time it happened to work out.

Pours a slightly hazy golden with nice white head that lasts for a good while. Smell is bready malts with a slight tang of tart apples. Taste is not as malty as I expected, but more rounded, restrained bitterness, and does finish with an almost fruity tang and sourdough flavor. The 6.5% abv is perceived as a bit of sharpness on the finish.

Overall I quite like this, although I think I prefer a standard Helles.

Cheers and happy Father’s Day! Some pictures from my son are in the background of the picture.
