Are you ready for some new beer?
    For this Sunday's party,
I am your host and my mission is to get this thread started.

    Everybody's a critic
    On this weekly thread
    We got pales, stouts, lambic
    They gonna be taste-tested

Now the head is all settled, the time is right
All you NBSers are here to give insight

Ok, so I ripped of a song meant for tomorrow and the professional football season officially started Thursday, but this is the first official football Sunday on the 2019-2020 season. From years on the site, I know not everyone here is a sports fan - including people who erroneously consider "football" to be a completely different sport

But our football - both college and pros - reign supreme in the US. The Super Bowl has even become a pseudo-national holiday. And let's face it, tailgating happens and there is a good amount of beer consumed before and during games.

Hopefully you can find some time today to try a new beer. Maybe you'll do it when you aren't entrenched in watching the game, say during pre-game or halftime. If so, we're here to read your thoughts (probably during a commercial break). We'll check in on your thoughts about the beer's look, smell, taste, and feel. We'll be interested in anything else you have to say about your beer, as well.

We might not care about your thoughts on your football team, but feel free to tell us anyhow. We probably can't stop you, unless we happen to be a moderator. The rest of us will smile and nod politely, in most cases, unless your team is a bitter rival of ours. Regardless of how your team fares today, we do hope your new beer treats you well.

So good luck to your team, unless they are an NFC East team that is actually from an eastern city. Or they picked up a troublesome diva WR yesterday. Or...

Never mind. We're on the field and you elected to receive. The whistle has blown, and I've just kicked off. Time for you to return with a review (no fair catches).

    New Beer Sunday: Leipzig Gose

Mornin’ NBSers, with thanks to @cjgiant for his start up and with a report on a fruity Gose.

The weather here today is looking good with the skies expected to be partly sunny and a high near 80. Going to be a day for some errands and outdoor chores I think.

This morning’s new beer is from Bells and is the 2nd in their Leaves of Grass Series: The Prairie-Grass Dividing. The brewery says of this beer that they used “artisan heirloom grains” in brewing this beer.

My review, still in progress, can be found here:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/287/428281/?ba=drtth#review

The aromas/flavors of this beer are light and show some plum, a bit of rose wine and some grainy malt. There’s also a bit of saltiness, a touch of coriander and some fruitiness from the plum. The tartness and sweetness are light, pleasant and balance each other nicely and there’s little or no bitterness. Enjoyable, drinkable and refreshing, this one is worth a try.

As for a bit of a song, here's a combination I never expected to see/hear:

    Cheers, all!

[IMG] Poured into a 16 oz Nordic pint glass canned on 8/27/19. Pours a very attractive clear bright orange with a solid finger plus of sticky white head that leaves big thick rings of lace with excellent retention, gorgeous beer. 4.75

Smell herbal earthy hops, pine, apricot, blueberry, and grapefruit rind. 4.5

Taste follows only way to describe earthy and slightly herbal but excellent, pine, a hint of blueberry, upfront with apricot and grapefruit in the bold lingering finish. 4.5

Mouthfeel is big, a tad sticky for sure, not overly carbonated but not crazy soft either, all the fresh hops just completely coat your entire palate, and at 8.7% ABV easy drinking but huge on flavor. 4.5

Overall I love a good NEDIPA, but I still love something boldly assertive and slightly more bitter like this, wow yes please. 4.5

Morning all! As a long-suffering Jets fan there is only one football for me now, and after yesterday's game only one team, and that team is NYCFC. What a game!

Had a great week in the woods and found a wonderful assortment of delicious fungi. Getting ready to go out again. Hopefully will run into some adolescent versions of these just popped Armillaria mellea found Friday.

    Hello New Beer Sunday!!!

Wait, I'm posting in the morning? Oh, that's right, I no longer have to work Sunday. YES!!!!!!!!!

Me, excited and happy? Well, just a little.

I'll be posting a new beer later this afternoon, from Toppling Goliath in Decorah, Iowa. It will probably be around noon, but the beer will be taking me back to the delights of the morning - if their taplist is accurate.

I would wager that they will have the Vikings playing, but I really don't care for football much, so it will be on the back burner.

See you all in a while from Iowa.

Happy New Tying Up Loose Ends Beer Sunday (Week 759)!

It is nice to be back following last weekend's hiatus while I was exploring the Bucks County (PA) Ale Trail over the long Labor Day weekend.

Sadly, I went off of football (American-style) a few years ago during the National Anthem protests. My mother refers to me as a "Super-Patriot", but I was not really bothered by it until Week 3 that season. It was to be, for me, one of my most highly-anticipated games in a long time, pitting my AFC team (Th' Stillers) against my NFC team (Da Bears) at Soldier Field. My disappointment at The Stillers' conduct that afternoon, botching the protest & making the only veteran on the team look like King Goober, and at Soldier Field no less, put me off.

I don't miss it, either. I have very fond memories of watching football on tv with my late Pops & of many trips to see them play, both at home & on the road, but now the NFL is in my rear-view mirror. I will continue to watch college football & I am really looking forward to seeing my alma mater in their retro uniforms (Pitt) at Penn State this Saturday.

No, for me, hockey is king! I will watch it at any time at any level. But, since nothing is going off today, I shall indulge myself in some beers, instead.

This week is like a rummage sale/odds 'n' sods/jumble sale with beer. I have an incredible backlog & with being homebound following prostate surgery (the irony of the CAN man having had CANcer was not lost on me) in June, I found the time to really go through & take stock.

I assembled a LOT of brewery horizontals, many of which were the subjects of previous New Beer Sundays, but some single-Os fell through the cracks. They become today's focus as I get Crack!in' with:

Good day all you New BSers! @cjgiant, thanks for the reminder that it'll be no TV on sunday for the next few months - I don't care to watch massive meat-bags slamming into each other. Well, except for SUMO! Now there's a REAL sport!
Anyway, today's New Breakfast Beer is one I apparently have gotten to add to the data base:

$ 19.62 (Including shipping and PA tax)/22 oz bottle ($ 0.892/oz) from Tavour, Seattle, WA. Reviewed 9/8/19.
“Bottled on 07/11/19” clearly stamped on back of label. Ghost 760. Stored at 42 degrees and served at 56 degrees (per label instructions) in a hand-washed and dried Jester King snifter.
    Appearance – 3.75.
First pour – Medium amber, clear.
Body – Dark amber, opaque center and translucent edge. When held to the light, red-amber and translucent throughout.
Head – Large (Maximum 6.5 cm, aggressive center pour), tan, high density and somewhat fizzy, average duration, diminishing to a three mm crown and a thin partial cap.
Lacing – Poor. An occasional island of tiny bubbles is adhering to the glass.
Aroma – 4 - Strong caramel with a hint of toffee and malt.
Flavor – 3.5 – Begins sweet and caramelly, malty with a bit of date/figiness like a Belgian quad. No alcohol (11% ABV) flavor or aroma, no dimethylsulfide, no diacetyl.
Palate – 3.5 – Full, almost syrupy with a bit of sliminess, soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 3.5 - Paucity of lacing is mildly upsetting but not totally unexpected for an 11% ABV brew. The sliminess is no doubt due to the abundance of oats (they do call it an OAT wine). The flavor is unremarkable while the nose is remarkable only for its strength. Overall, an average brew at a premium price.

Rating 3.64, rDev 0% (First review)

I gotta say it's getting difficult to track Adroit Theory brews - they currently have 454 listed active and archived. Maybe. That could have changed while I was typing this.

Thanks for the start @cjgiant !

Today I am starting off with one that I have been waiting years to try, literally. From the generous @strohme2 we have

    Beer: Bourbon Paradise
    Brewery: Prairie Artisan Ales (OK)
    ABV: 15.9%
    [IMG]
From a 12 oz. bottle into a PAA Dino glass, this beer pours out with a slick blackness and almost touching a motor oil thickness. Caramel colored bubbles that disappear as fast as they can form leave no crown.

The nose carries in a beautiful bourbon presence with dark fruit, from plums to sweet raisins. Thick, sticky vanilla, marshmallow like, and a touch of coconut linger throughout the background while you can also pick up fudgey chocolate.

The taste follows the nose well and doesn’t let me down with the thick, sticky marshmallow vanilla presence. Touches of the dark fruit mix with an underlying coconut accent. Chocolate and vanilla cake batter.

It’s thick with a full, sticky sweetness. At 15.9%, it drinks more like 11-12%. So smooth, creamy and doesn’t have any out of balance burn. Definitely scary how easy this goes down for the ABV.

Overall, I’ve waited a long time to try this and I’m so glad that it doesn’t disappoint me one bit, even with high expectations. There’s a reason for the ratings.

Huge thanks to Justin & cheers to you, NBS!

I can’t wait to see what you bring to the share!

    Happy New Bought-out brewery Sunday!

There were a few NBS reviews of this beer, Founder's Underground Mountain Brown, last week. The general consensus, as I recall, was that the beer was pretty good. Looking at the beer's page, it's already the ranked #1 brown ale, surpassing its non-barrel aged self and Funky Buddha's French Toast in the style. Looking at the style ranking list, I wasn't surprised to see that most of the top "brown ales" had some twist on the style, usually with flavor additions.

Oh well, to put style arguments aside, I did a quick check of my review of the base beer. I was a bit below the average on it, with my main complaint that it was much more of a coffee beer than a brown ale. So much for putting arguments aside. Well, I'm betting putting the beer in barrels isn't going to make it more like a traditional brown ale, but I still might enjoy it more than the base.

Coming out of the bottle, the beer is a medium brown, and looks pretty clear. In the glass, it is a a much deeper brown, though still distinguishable from black. A beige head hits a decent height with a fairly aggressive pour, and that head leaves a curtain of lace as I just let it sit and settle. A thick circle surrounds a large island and continues the lacing for the rest of the glass.

The aromas fit the morning time, with the coffee being the leader. There's a little bit of vanilla and just a hint of chocolate coming from a heavily toasted (but not burnt) bread. The bourbon sneaks into the nose after I've taken a handful of sips.

At first taste, I am a little surprised to find the beer a little lighter than expected. The carbonation is light, so that's not helping. The flavors are fairly bold, giving a richness, and the beer isn't that dry, but the beer does not seem to weigh on my palate. My best guess is that the bite from the alcohol is aiding in giving this lighter impression to me.

So, opening note does have a bit more of that dark toast with a little bit of wooden bitterness helping with that. The coffee doesn't power through things like I felt it did in Sumatra Mountain Brown. It's definitely there, but it's sharing so nicely with the vanilla, oak, and very light bourbon spice that they seem to lessen each other's influence enough to let the toasted malt come through.

Not that it's trying in any way to be so, but this is still far from a traditional brown ale. It's intentionally bigger that a normal "robust" brown ale. However, unbelievably (based on my pre-tasting statements above) something in this brings it back towards the brown ale style from what I thought about the non-barrel aged version. While I am going off my previous words from a different sitting, I do recall thinking the coffee was too strong throughout my share of the eight Sumatra Mountains I had (probably 5-6 of them).

Of course, I am now curious to try this aside the regular to truly see how they compare. Time will tell if I get the chance, but at this point in it, I will state I enjoy this version more and think it is somehow also a little bit more to the style it is placed under. By degrees.

Do you have a favorite Keller Pils?

In 2017 within NBS I had Summer of Pilsners series where I discussed a few Keller Pilsner beers. For the uninitiated (or folks will failing memories like me) a Keller Pilsner is an unfiltered Pilsner. For those of you who do not speak German the word “Keller” literally translates to Cellar. In addition to being unfiltered these beers are unpasteurized as well. In my opinion, the less processing that a beer goes through the better.

For today I have a new brand from Sly Fox that was labeled as Saphir Keller Pils.

As can be noted via the beer name this new version of a Keller Pils is distinguished via the fact this beer features a relatively new German hop of Saphir. Some folks may be familiar with this hop since it is a finishing hop (dry hopping) for Firestone Walker Pivo Pils,

Below is how Saphir is detailed on the learn.kegerator website:

Saphir Hops: The Gem of German Noble Hops

The Saphir hop variety, sometimes called Sapphire, Hallertau Saphir, or Sappire, is another aroma hop to come out of the Hop Research Institute in Hüll, Germany.

It’s hard to pin-point exactly when the breeding program that resulted in Saphir began, but it was released in 2000. So knowing that, we can take an educated guess by using an average of 10 to 14 years to bring a new hop onto the market, which gives us a start window of between 1990 and 1986.

    Saphir Hops

It seems the program was part of the Hop Institutes ongoing goal to create more commercially viable (read disease resistant) varieties to replace disease susceptible hops, much like Hallertauer Mittelfruh, while retaining the noble character. Saphir was released the same time as another two new aroma varieties, Opal and Smaragd.

Saphir’s pedigree remains shadowy. It was a cross between two unnamed varieties developed by the Institute; simply designated as 83/17/20 and 80/56/6.

The result was a hop with one of the lowest alpha acid contents in the world, only 2.0% to 4.5%. It has noble character in line with that of the variety it is most often compared to, Hallertauer Mittlefrueh.

    Sensory Description:

Saphir is described as having a noble hop character. Mild and pleasant, it has spicy notes melding with tones of sweet fruit, like berry and light tangerine citrus; soft, but with distinct hoppy tang.”

    https://learn.kegerator.com/saphir-hops/

Well, I am a fan of FW Pivo Pils and the above sensory description sure does sound tasty so I am excited here. Let’s drink!!

Served in my Firestone Walker Pivo Pils glasses (one for me and one for my wife):

    Appearance:

Pours a hazy straw color with a white head.

    Aroma:

A pleasant combination of malt and hop aromas. Bready malt and the hops are mostly herbal/spicy but some citrus (tangerine?) as well in the background.

    Taste:

The flavor follows the nose with a tasty combination of bready malt flavors and herbal/spicy/citrusy hop flavors. This beer is moderately bitter.

    Mouthfeel:

Medium bodied wit a dry finish.

    Overall:

This beer is very good. The Saphir hops provide an intriguing flavor to this beer.

To circle back to the question I posted in the lead in to this post, while I very much enjoyed drinking this beer it is not my favorite. My favorite Keller Pils is the Sly Fox Tettnanger Keller Pils which I discussed two years ago (see link below) but this new version from Sly Fox is certainly in the medal rounds.

S - Dark roast malts, cocoa, some espresso notes. There is a touch of burnt brown sugar, and licorice as well.
T - Follows the nose well, I am thankful the flavors are cocoa, and roast malt mainly and less anise, as its not a favorite. Add to that mix a kiss of molasses, and some dark fruit and there you have it.
M - Medium in body, stays in a single lane across the palate, sharp, with an exceptional finish, Dry and lingering on 80% cocoa, for quite some time.

Totally agree on tracking Adroit Theory beers. At one point, they claimed they would never brew the same beer twice. I inwardly chuckled. Either way, I tried being a good BA and adding their beers for a while. But before they grew, no one else was rating the beers so I stopped.

Glad you didn't include the "Ghost No." in the name. That number actually indicates the recipe number - so Adroit appears to track each recipe used as it evolves its beers.

Lastly, I had a taster of that beer a few weekends ago. The tasting room sometimes pours from bottles, but I think what I had was draft. It did remind me a little of a wheatwine with a little bit of a tang that you didn't seem to mention in your review. I'll agree with you it was an average brew, and I'd also agree on price, because most Adroit beers tend towards the expensive side.

Hazy gold color with white cap and lacing.

Aroma of strong pine supported by citrus.

Taste on entry is heavily malt which is quickly covered over by the pine and citrus hops. Fairly simple flavors that track alongside each other without actually blending together. It tastes and feels like they doubled everything.

    Full texture with balancing carbonation.

This is quite simply a strong brew. It's impressive for it's size as is a 50 lb watermelon, but like that behemoth bigger doesn't necessarily mean better.

    best by 05-29-20

L-The beer pours a pale amber with a 2 finger off white head. The head recedes to a thin film with small spots of lacing left behind.
S-The nose is pretty typical for a fest bier with the malt being forward and bready. Overall the intensity is pretty modest.
T-On the palate the beer seems closer to a marzen than an actual Festbier. It's malty and sweet. Hops are overshadowed and this affects the balance. This to me is very similar to Sam Adams in flavor profile.
F-Mouthfeel overall is light. Carbonation is moderate. The lingering sweetness keeps the beer from having that nice dry finish. Drinkability is reduced some what do to this.
O- Like most Benediktiner beers the price point on this beer is excellent. If you like your Octoberfest beers to be slightly sweet than you will find this one to your liking. It's certainly worth a shot for the price. Recommended.

I never seem to have a new beer on a Sunday, but this week I have two. This one is new to N.C. and it’s from Double Nickel in NJ and it’s Woosh NEIPA. 5.8 abv, uses Citra, cascade, Equinox with some grapefruit added. In my HF Balloon glass I hardly ever use because I break shit pretty well. A bit of a straw colored pour, super hazy, nice initial head that retains to the end. Very clean, dry, not overly juicy, moderate bitterness. It’s one of those NEIPAS that doesn’t just follow the OJ bomb theory on beer construction, it’s not a novel approach to the style, and it’s very good, high drinkability factor too. All in all it’s a very good beer, an easy drinker that just slides down and it’s decently balanced. Wonder why they felt the need to add grapefruit, you get that influence easily using only hops. My first reaction after pouring it was it was going to be a Hop Hands clone, but it’s not quite that dry, and it’s certainly not that bitter. I’d buy it again , reasonably priced too, like $3.75 a can.
