Dave, glad to hear your well, I just posted a toast to my Best friend and fishing buddy who wound up dying because of what happened to you ( he was past 240 over 120),.. he didn’t get regular physicals and me and those that were close never saw it coming. A sober wake up call to many.

Short's Bourbon Evil Urges. Been wanting to try this one for a long time. This was the 2015 release(2018 was 22oz). Wow this was amazing. Nice rocky head retention/lacing for the ABV. Aromas and flavors of huge milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, molasses, raisin, plum, prune, fig, date, pear, apple, bourbon, toasted oak, nuttiness, and dark bread; with light notes of coconut, licorice, smoke, leather, tobacco, herbal, grass, banana, clove, peppercorn, and yeast earthiness. Minimal herbal, grassy, roasted bitterness; and yeast/bourbon/oak spiciness on the finish. Medium carbonation and fairly full body. Very creamy, silky, velvety malts; slight slickness, sticky hops, chalky roast, and oak tannins in the mouthfeel. Slightly increasing lingering bitter/spicy dryness; no cloying. Amazingly smooth/soft, minimal warming 10.4%, zero barrel booze. Time has been amazing with this one. Perfectly balanced rich malts, fruity yeast, and barrel presence/integration. Not overly sweet/heavy from lingering dryness. This was a lot less spicy/banana on the yeast than my base beer review; so looking forward to revisiting that one in December. This was the smoothest BSDA I've ever had on mouthfeel. Just stellar. 4.4

Happy Sunday NBS players. A rare miss of the thread for me last week as my younger brother, who lives in CA, flew in for the week. Spent most of the week with him and catching up/doing shit. First time he's been back to NY 5/6 years. Anyway, a rather warm summer feeling day here on the island. Lots of sun and clear skies. Spending the evening catching up on football and fantasy numbers.

My first new beer today is Gold Coast, dipa, from Garvies Point brewing. The brew checks in at 8% abv and has a 6/25/19 canning date. Cold stored and a single can purchase so I figured it was worth a try. Somehow it's brewed to celebrate the "iconic history" of long islands gold coast. Good luck figuring that shit out. So...a nice tribute to gluttony and rich aholes.

A rather orange color, on the pour, with muddled clarity and a short but sustaining white head of bubbles. The nose is full of hops and tropical fruit. The drinking hits smooth with tangy fruit hops upfront. A smooth flow that finishes slightly bitter. Notes of mango, grape, tangerine, and grapefruit. A moderate mouth feel that drinks fruity and dry. Rather drinkable and straight forward but some aspects come off as forced and even a bit chemically tasting at time.

Overall, decent but I'm far from in love with it. I’m in the 3.5 range,

    375 ml. bottle.
    Brewed April 5, 2019.
Moderate pour yields a one inch pure white head over a straw colored body with some sticky lacing. Nose of slight funk, cardamom, slight honey, and slight citrus. Taste mirrors nose somewhat, but brings it up a few notches as the honey and lemon come out wonderfully. Wow! Can a beer be complex and simply delicious at the the time? I say yes! Very nice feel and overall, yet another fantastic American Wild Ale/Belgian Saison from Greensboro Bend, VT. Cheers to Vasili!!!

Happy Sunday! I took my first trip to WeldWerks yesterday and grabbed some cans. I also had Extra Extra Juicy Bits on tap and it was phenomenal. Definitely the best hazy I've had in the past few months.

This is the single IPA Mosaic-dry-hopped version of the same beer. That's a mouthfull. Will it measure up?

Canned 12 days ago. Pours pale hazy yellow with a film of white head.

The nose is pineapple and peach with floral and spicy undertones.

The taste is pineapple, orange, and berry with earthy, muddled Mosaic dankness mixed in. I think I prefer the base Juicy Bits (and definitely Extra Extra) but this is very good.

The mouthfeel is medium with medium bitterness.

Overall, I'm feeling 4.25 across the board but will sip on it before I plug in a score.

Pours black with a a frothy tan head, there’s loads of chocolate and caramel notes on the nose, and an earthy hop aroma as well. Wow.

The chocolate and caramel are front and center on the taste, and they are rich flavors indeed. The earthy hop flavors are also present, providing a base for a complex beer that is truly a pleasure to drink.

There's a lot to hit in this post.

First of all, and most importantly, @cavedave - thank you for taking the time to contribute all that you have. I feel fortunate that I've been able to have a beer, or two, or twelve with you face-to-face, but now those moments really feel far too few in number. Such is life. You had a way of throwing a spanner in the works on many, many occasions on this website... and I think that's a contribution that will be greatly missed. @AyatollahGold - we didn't get to meet, but your presence here will be missed as well. I know it's customary to say "I hope you both come back," but I have an offbeat perspective - In a way, I don't hope you come back. If being away from BeerAdvocate is the better choice for you, then I hope you stay strong by staying away... even if it makes this a less interesting place. Cheers to everyone here and especially you two.

And now for something completely different. Like others here, I don't normally gravitate to conventionally "romantic" movies. Regarding Annie Hall (which has been mentioned by @Smakawhat @TongoRad ), it's got one of my favorite openings. The director of the movie essentially starts the movie by telling the audience (literally) that he doesn't end up with the girl at the end. The movie ends accordingly. It's an incredibly moving and engaging take on a romantic movie for that alone. It's great to see all of the Bogart mentions today. I'm a fan of the bookstore scene in The Big Sleep. I guess it's only "romantic" in the eye of the beholder, but who wouldn't like the line: "You know it just happens I got a bottle of pretty good rye in my pocket."

Now for the beer. I'm giving brief mention of all the beers I had today in this one post for a few reasons. These are all in hindsight rather than posting while drinking. Details are totally lacking. More importantly, I also discovered that my palate was totally shot and these beers weren't given a fair deal.

    Rhinelander - Boatswain Chocolate Stout

This was a Trader Joe's cheapie. More often than not, my experiences with such beers are less than positive. I tend to stay away from them now. This one was dark brown. Tasted of roast with a sharp sour component and dark chocolate. This beer made me miserable. Unenjoyable.

Mikkeller SD (San Diego) - Table Talker

With the name, you just kind of know that this will be a Begian-ish "table beer" and it is. It was hazy at first but cleared up as it warmed. Chill haze. In the beginning, I thought this was nice, light and lemony. Then I had to walk away and I let it warm up. Getting back to the beer, it was as if someone swapped beers with me. As mentioned, it cleared up. The light, lemony, Belgian character was gone. The beer now tasted like an AAL but with much higher bitterness. I was scratching my head in disbelief.

    Erdinger - Oktoberfest

This beer was mentioned in the Oktoberfest thread in BeerAdvocate Talk. People (including me) were discussing varieties of Oktoberfestbiers. The idea of Hefeweizens being labeled Festbiers was brought up. I'm of the opinion that a Hefeweizen can be an Oktoberfestbier. With this particular beer, I'm not wondering how a brewer can call a Hefe an O-fest, but rather, how does this brewer call any of their beers an Oktoberfest when that term is reserved for select German brewers?

The brewer claims: "ERDINGER Oktoberfest blends the advantages of our well known wheat beer with the traditional Oktoberfest taste. A grainy flavour and lovely hoppiness." I would have thought that there was a lot of marketing nonsense in those words if I read them before trying the beer. Surprisingly, my impression pretty much mirrored the text though. While drinking it, I thought, "This tastes like a grainy and bitter wheat beer." Here's where it gets weird though, despite that synergy, drinking this beer had me convinced that my palate was shot. I think something happened to me when I let the previous beer sit. EVERYTHING was going to taste bitter for me today. I think things were just off with me. I didn't think this beer was a joy to drink. I don't normally drink Hefeweizen, but this seemed lacking. I couldn't say how much of it was the beer and how much of it was me.

Night Shift - One Hop Double Time: Citra

Stubborn me decided to keep drinking though. Yep, I still got an overwhelming bitterness here too. Alright, if I open anything else it'll be wasted. This beer was surprisingly light - in color and malt character. The Citra was apparent, with an orange odor coming off the beer. Pith in the taste. I expected a better beer here.

In the end, I didn't care for any of these beers, but my own taste buds were making things difficult and unfair.

    2019 Vintage.
Moderate pour yields a 5/8 inch white head over a super bright copper body with some lacing. Nose of pumpkin, spice, and a bit of rum. Taste mirrors nose with the booze introducing itself even more. Boozy finish of rum and spice. Nice feel and overall, not as hoppy as the base Pumking, but pretty tasty for me. Others may have a problem with the excess rum but I like it. Yo-ho-ho!

Melancholy New Tying Up Loose Ends Beer Sunday, Redux (Week 760), Round 2!

Oh man, what izzit with people suddenly taking ill?!? I was blindsided by @cavedave 's announcement; floored by @Tucquan & stunned by @AyatollahGold . I dodged a major bullet this Summer by having my CANcerous prostate removed, but it was discovered early & I am CANcer-free for the moment. Next up is a physical in November to be followed by a colonoscopy in December. Believe me, the irony of the CAN man CANtracting CANcer was not lost on me!

I was also pleasantly surprised by the return visit of/by @utopiajane ! Long time, no see or hear! Don't be a stranger!

The day has not progressed as quickly as I had intended. It got broken up by my going to see "Hustlers" & I am trying to get things back on track.

My next beer, following my initial salvo, was a quick return to last week (759):
    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/40386/439940/?ba=woodychandler#navigation
    [IMG]
requiring an add, a photo & its initial review. Phew! No wonder that I needed to take a break.
Next, I CANmondeered the TARDIS to take me back to Week 733 to review:
    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/30697/437970/?ba=woodychandler#review
    [IMG]
How was I able to take CANtrol of the TARDIS? Easy! By dint of so many Minhas beers, I have been CANsformed into The Cyberleader. While that pesky Gallifreyan was tied up with my minons, I snuck in & took off. I shall return his machine at the end of tonight, remove my suit & resume human functions, but this was an insCANce where my affliction has paid off.

My next move was to return to Week 752, starting with:

    then: https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/40976/384636/?ba=woodychandler#review

    followed by:
    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/40976/197748/?ba=woodychandler#review

& NOW, right NOW (sorry, different thread) or was it THEN? Hmm. This time travel stuff is tricky!:

That'll do it for this week. Next week, I hope to run through the single-O throwbacks & then embark on the finale of one of the longest horizontals that I have ever undertaken. See yinz then!
