When I first saw their regular IPA, I was rather skeptical as I have never had a decent American IPA by a Franconian brewery before, but it absolutely blew me away, probably the best German WCIPA I've ever had, which I couldn't wrap my head around at the time.

Then I learned that they have been collaborating with Fat Head's for a long time an things fell into place. This is one of their actual collaboration brews and it's just so amazing to me how this small, Franconian brewery came to collaborate with Fat Head's.

Imperial IPA, a Triple West Coast IPA brewed in collaboration between German brewery Kundmüller and American brewery Fat Head's (9% ABV).

Pours a cloudy, deep amber coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of biscuity, caramel malt and quite resinous hops, with overripe citrus/tropical notes of grapefruit, papaya and pineapple, as well as strong herbal and piney accents.

Taste follows the nose, with a great balance of sweet biscuity, quite caramelly malt and quite bitter and resinous hops with overripe citrus/tropical notes of grapefruit, papaya and lighter tangerine and pineapple, as well as strong herbal and piney accents. Finishes bittersweet, with a very strong bitterness and some grapefruit, papaya and strong pine lingering in the aftertaste. Full mouthfeel with a medium/rich body and medium carbonation.

This is quite a bold, old-school West Coast IPA with a strong caramel malt backbone and very resinous and bitter hops, as well as distinct, overripe citrus/tropical notes and almost pungent herbal accents. While I think that there's a very nice overall balance keeping all those strong flavors together, it's all a little much for my personal taste as well, to be honest. A little too sweet, a little too bitter, a little too boozy. Just a little though, mind you, this is still quite an enjoyable brew in its own right, although I did very much prefer their more laid-back and supremely balanced regular IPA.

Here's a little anecdote that I can't help telling at this point: I had a very brief chat with an employee at a bar selling to-go beers before buying this who swore that it was horribly infected and undrinkable, but knowing Kundmüller and not really trusting her judgement too much, I bought it at a different place anyway and am glad that I did. This is basically a person who has probably never had a proper WCIPA in their life and is so used to modern IPAs tasting like orange juice that they think an extremely bitter, resinous and herbal beer is "infected",.

Also, comparing the stats and reviews, and considering the logo on the bottle, I seriously have to wonder if this isn't straight up Hop Juju ...

Good afternoon all. I probably wont be in the ring with a new beer today. I could pull a cellar brew but I am not in the mood for anything heavy today especially after waking up and having a bloody mary than going back for a nap. Enjoying reading all the stellar reviews as usual. And thanks to @zid For the informative kickoff! Cheers!

Glad you got to try that one. Rusty Nail is amazing, and even with Fremont's increased output, still goes quickly, at least on my side of Washington.

I got this delivered to me yesterday from Spilled Grain Brewing in Annandale, MN.
    Nut Hugger - 4.5% ABV.
    You like peanut butter? Check!
    You like chocolate? Check!

Damn good, and, I'd better make a run there next Sunday, and hope some is left to get. Damn good.

    4.06/5 rDev 0%
    look: 4 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

Pours a very dark brown color. 2 finger off white head. Retention isn't the best. No lacing on the glass.
The nose is straight up peanut butter, and that has chocolate notes mixed in to create a pleasing aroma.
Taste - lots of peanut butter in here, and then there's a bit of dark chocolate flavor that adds a bit more to this amazing combo.
The body is decent. I know it's more into the flavors, but they last in my throat. It's quite pleasing.
I'm a huge fan of peanut butter and chocolate, and this beer combines both to an amazing level.

    Cheers all!!!!

Good Sunday afternoon, New Beers Swiggers and commentators. I hope everyone is well today as we contemplate another week of craziness. My wife and I were at the Shore this weekend for the first time since January. Yesterday was glorious with the State-owned portion of the beach open. I thought everyone acted responsibly but apparently our illustrious governor disagreed because he closed the beach again in the wee hours of the morning. Very disappointing. But it was raining when we left and by the time we arrived home it was a glorious Spring afternoon. The first really warm Sunday of the season. So it's time to drink some beer!

New Beer #1 is Hopsteiner IPA, the most recent "State of the Art Series" offering from Industrial Arts Brewing. This 7.3% ABV American IPA is hopped with Sultana (unfamiliar to me) and something called "Experimental 09326." It opens with tart lemon peel, grapefruit, and sourdough bread but as it warms has some sweet pineapple notes. It tastes and feels like an Industrial Arts IPA (other than the Wrenches): it's crisp, lite, and bitter. Perfect for today's weather. Here's my full review:

    4.19/5 rDev +1.7%
    look: 4.25 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.25

Canned on 4/15/2020. Poured into a pint glass. It pours a cloudy, bright golden-yellow with a finger of foamy, snow white head and a thin coating of lacing. An attractive pour. The nose is highly herbal and floral, along with notes of lemon peel, grapefruit, and pineapple. The taste opens with tart, sour lemon and grapefruit, along with sour dough and pine needles. As it warms it bit, however, I can taste the advertised pineapple and tart berry. It's acidic and quite bitter. It's really hard to place the hops. I'm not familiar with Sultana. But this is vintage Industrial Arts with its crisp, clean taste and mouth feel. It's hard to believe the ABV is 7.3%. I wasn't sure what to make of this at first but it really grew on me. It's a perfect beer to drink on the first 80 degree day of the Spring. Nicely done!

I hope everyone's enjoying his or her new beer(s) today. It's much too nice to stop so I'll be back soon. Cheers, NBS!

It's pizza day here at the woodchipper's! I've been trying to support local breweries, but my son brought me this, Mikkeller San Diego's Padon Art Jargon, an NEIPA. It's got about 8 month's on it, but it was a gift.

Poured from a 16oz can to a nonic. Sadly this can was dated 9.11.19.
Not much of an aroma, faint citrus.
Taste is kind of sugary honestly. There is lemon and dankness, but not heavy. Alcohol is obvious.
Decent carbonation but still good mouth coating.
Judging by the fact that there are only 3 other reviews here, all dated last fall, this beer was a small, one-off release. I gave it a 3.75 out of sympathy because for its age, it was not horrible.

I'll be back later with a fresher beer. In the meantime, I will read your reviews. Cheers.

    Good afternoon NBS
Full disclosure here. I bought a four pack of this beer on Thursday. I've had two of the four pack and gave another to a friend to try last night. I thought it worthy of a review in light of the new format...

12oz bottled 04/09/20 poured into a Spiegelau IPA glass at fridge temp, no ABV listed on label. The beer pours bright golden amber in color with sticky khaki colored head. The head recedes to a fat splotchy ring and leaves some lacing. The aroma is sweet and medium low in intensity with candied orange, pine and caramel. The taste is semisweet caramel with bitter pine and citrus right behind trailing off to a medium plus bitter citrus rind finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and adequately carbonated. Residual sticky hop oil and some malt sweetness combine to keep the finish from being dry, yet it's not heavy or overly sweet. No trace of the 9.5% ABV. Overall, excellent to my taste. An example of the exact type of beer I began to seek out fifteen years ago and still seek out today.

This was the last 3F (widely known) imperial IPA that I had never tried. The pricing was always so high, I could always find similar quality for a lot less. I applaud the move to 12oz x 4 pack and for producing IPAs that I want to drink. Cheers all and enjoy the new beer in your glass today!

Dear Lord, you guys are killing me with these peachy beers. Now I thoroughly enjoyed my peachy Festina Lente (DFH)from @larryi86 last week but now I am inspired to follow up with blueberries. So I'll be back with Right Loose, an American wild ale with with Main blueberries. This too I would have normally held on to share, but as you mentioned...c’est la vie.

I'm a little nervous to show/taste this one, for a number of reasons. First, I very rarely drink a Pilsner, so on a basic level I really don't know what to look for, or what I'm talking about. Second, there seem to be a lot of Pilsner experts on this thread. Lastly, I'm pretty sure this isn't the right glassware to be using, but it is brewery-proper, so I guess I have that going for me. Anyway . . .

Tired Hands Trendler Pilsner. Pours a bright yellow, with a quickly evaporating head. Aroma, and I hate to say it, because it's my only point of reference, is straight-up Budweiser . . . I mean, this is like what I remember my first Bud smelling like, back when I shoulder-tapped for it as a teenager. My first taste is similarly, well, "that tastes like Bud." But when I let it warm, I do start picking out some bready, green apple notes. Does that sound right? And sorry to borrow some wine language here, but does this somehow taste rounder than a typical AAL? The mouthfeel is actually pretty impressive, not nearly as watery as I was expecting. Not exactly throat-coating, but you can imagine sipping on this for a while. The further along I go, the more complex it gets: somehow spicy, maybe a little grassy? I'm wondering how much of my experience is colored by mostly drinking 8%+ DIPAs lately, which are pretty far from subtle. And I could hardly tell you whether this is an "authentic" Pilsner, but I do like it, quite a lot.

Greetings, all, and thanks to @zid for getting us going today. FWIW, I've found Kolsch to be a style that's hard to pin down. I've generally just felt a good Kolsch is something light and sessionable, and not really gone beyond that. It doesn't help that the few German, traditionally brewed examples I've had were all too old to get a feel for the style, or that when I was in Cologne in 1999, and could've had them at the source, I was blissfully unaware of the style and drank Guinness (I know, I know), instead.

    Anyway...

Today I'm starting local. I picked up two tallboys from a very small, local brewery in NW Spokane called For The Love Of God Brewing on Friday afternoon while running some errands. I've only been there once before (I try to limit my drinking forays whenever possible to where I can walk to, and with about 8 or 9 breweries plus several good bars within what I consider walking distance, I don't get to breweries further out all that often), last fall, but I liked what I had. I bought their West Coast IPA (which I'd had on-tap when I was there before) and a pastry stout meant to invoke the flavor of S'mores. I drank the IPA Friday night (both times I've come away feeling it was a hazy, and that the brewers might be too young to remember classic west coast style IPAs very well), and am today hitting the stout:
Haven't added this to BA yet, so here's a quick summary:
Canned May 1 per the label, it's 8.5% abv (no IBUs indicated), can was underfilled, so almost no head. Nails the smell and taste of S'mores. Virtually no carbonation, although this isn't as crucial as it would be with other styles. Still kinda disappointing. When I can go to the brewery and drink this at the source, I'll be happy to do so, but I'm not sure I'll get cans from them again unless I'm drinking them within a few hours.

I thank you. Glad to be here, but I always worry that my reviews aren't that good, because I just don't think I can express what I'm tasting properly.

Also, since you're a chef, you might like this (and I apologize to the NBS gods not talking about beer). I decided to Sous Vide a T Bone steak today, and it was just out of this world good. I think the fillet minion (sp) part better than the NY Strip part, but the whole package was amazing, and blew me away. 3 hours at 135 was perfect for me. Then on the stove basting in butter in my cast iron fry pan sent it to the next level for me.

Bentonville Brewing Co.'s Space Goose Hazy IPA. Easily the best new in-state beer I've had in years, 6.3 % ABV, 4.45 Overall

Pours a slightly hazed honey color with a thumb of pearl colored head. Stellar lacing & head retention

S: Mangos, guava, fades a bit once warm

T: Follows the nose, also some passion fruit & sliced orange up front. Tangerine, green melon, bready dryness & guava as this warms. Finishes dry, a little grassy with orange, green melon & guava

MF: Medium body, fairly firm body & great balance

Easily the best Hazy IPA I've had by an in-state brewer. This brewery isn't prolific with releases, but all are solid to very good

Good afternoon everybody! I have an unexpectedly interesting grilling project coming up later. I was originally planning on making some lamb skewers, but after thinking about it a bit I decided to go with the ground lamb kebab route (after I cut all of the pieces off of some shoulder chops I wasn't too happy with the range of sizes, which included literal tiny scraps ). So it's all ground and marinating now, and I hope it all doesn't fall apart on the grill :grin:...

My only hope for a new beer today is actually one I had delivered a few days ago, and may have even opened one that night :astonished:. I wasn't taking notes, though, so I hope some rules can be bent in times like this.

    Industrial Arts Spring Landscape 2020

And It's still doing it! With such an abundant yin/yang, opposites-coexisting, confident personality to keep this old gemini quite content indeed. The hops are quite pronounced in all their rustic, borderline-aggressive glory; but there's actually a pretty nice counterweight in there with just the right feel on that honey-graham malt presence, and lingering finish. I think they got the decsription correct here, too- it's not really a 'maibock' in any way that brings that continental style to mind; but it's pale, and it's a bock, so helles bock sounds good to me. :sunglasses:

What's really beautiful here isn't so much the overall attitude on display, however; it's the execution all the way. All the flavors are so remarkably complementary, even when acting in the role of counterbalance or even intermediary, that it's a seamless ride from the initial aroma to the finish, from hoppy to malty and then both simultaneously. There's an herbal spiciness that permeates everything (peppery/dry mint/lavender and hay) and seems to have sent out its tendrils everywhere- perfectly supporting and elevating that svelte honeyish malt, and linking the aroma seamlessly with the long, clean bitter trail that the peaking malt rides out on.

With the exception on the first Autumn Landscape, another time when IA went pedal to the metal with the concept, this may just be tied for my fave one of the series. Superb, A+ (4.75)
