Hello and welcome to another edition of NBS!

Have a good one. Pretty normal week of my playing a lot of PC games, actually got a fair amount of new ones(all very discounted). I got my cellphone to work as a webcam and I did a stream of 8 string metal guitar through software rigs, and me playing video games. So I bought an Audio Technica condenser microphone and a MIDI footswitch board off Reverb.com Friday night. I have been having a bit more of a consistent new review routine going the past couple weeks, since I am not completely poor anymore; but I still have no interest in reviewing the volumes I was doing last for the past many years. I was up to 1600/year. Not even remotely feasible financially, when I have so many other hobbies to tend to now(and time to spend)

Feel free to come in and tell us your experience of a new beer you have tried today. Make sure to include look, smell, taste, feel, and overall what are your final thoughts about it. Pictures are encouraged as well, something nice to look at.

Stone Neverending Haze IPA. Excellent session NEIPA. Opaquely murky. Great fluffy head retention/foamy lacing. Aromas and flavors of big mandarin orange juice, red grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, mango, honeydew melon, blueberry, gooseberry, citrus peel/rind, wood, peppercorn, pine hops; with moderate wheat, cracker, biscuit dough, toasted malts; and herbal/floral/grassy hop earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation and body; balanced creamy/bready/grainy malts, sticky hops, and some resins/rinds in the mouthfeel. Light-moderate increasing resin dryness; no hop astringency. Very smooth/soft, zero warming 4%, with minimal lingering hop burn after the finish. Awesome Citra/Mosaic profile. Very juicy, vibrant, and fairly dank/earthy hops; with a great wheat/oat/malt backbone for the ABV. Minimal residual sweetness with lingering resin dryness. No complaints. Held up extremely well for December canning. Loved the hop profile as expected. 4

Very nice kickoff @superspak I am wrapping up things this early morning, and have poured a new beer FOR THE WORLD! Pollyanna and Revolution collaborated on a beer canned 6/2 and released Friday called Lederhosen Luau.

    From Revolutions website:

Brewed in collaboration with our friends at Pollyanna Brewing, Lederhosen Luau features Sabro, Citra, and Mosaic hops. This Hopfenweisse has a plethora of citrus, tropical fruit, and coconut from heavy dry hopping that compliments the German Hefeweizen yeast's big banana flavor. A silky body from German wheat, pils, vienna, and Munich malts glide this beer through the finish. We bet you never thought of doing the limbo in lederhosen, but now seems like a good time to stretch.

This is a unique beer and once I opened it was very happy to dive in.

Appearance: Very murky orange pour, bubbly white head dissipates quickly, leaving nominal lacing. 3.75

    Aroma:
Mild tropical aroma, coconut, citrus, grapefruit and banana. 3.75

    Taste:
Mirrors aroma, tongue tingling sweetness. Citrus leads, banana and coconut backs well.well. 4.25

    Mouthfeel:
Nominal faint fizzy bubble carbonation lingers throughout the pour/ Rich and creamy body, slightly dry, easy clean finish.4.25

    Overall:
Solid unique pour. Sweeter than I typically purchase, but this was a very good collaboration, and I'm glad I picked up a four pack. 4.0

I look forward to reading all the great reviews found each Sunday for new ideas. I will return later today with a new WCIPA from Lake Zurich that I am most eager to try.

    Cheers!

I already spend too much time in front of a computer and video gaming has limited appeal to me . My new hobby is cycling with an old hobby photography. I used to go to spin class to prepare for the soccer season as a player/ referee. The gym is closed , no spin. Now cycling early mornings to avoid traffic and catch a sunrise on occasion. My new beer is one that I read about on BA and found at my local CBC in Plymouth.

Good day New BSers! Thanks, Ian, for starting today's thread! Today's NBS entry:

    $ 7.49 (Including shipping)/16 oz can ($ 0.468/oz). Received 5/30/20 from Craftshack, San Diego, CA. Reviewed 6/7/20.
Marked on can’s lower lip “CANNED ON 02/20/20”. Stored at home at 42 degrees and served at 45 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. When the can is opened, it’s a fountain.
    Appearance – 3.5.
First pour – Pale Straw (SRM 2), hazy.
Body – Straw (SRM 3), hazy and translucent. When held to direct light, same.
Head – Large (Maximum six cm, aggressive center pour), off-white, high density, average retention, diminishing to an irregular four to nine mm crown fed by effervescence and a thin complete layer with a few rocks.
Lacing – Fair. Bands of tiny to medium bubbles with many stalactites.
Aroma – 4 – Begins very bready followed by Nobel hops, no malt.
Flavor – 4 – Begins mildly bitter with the Nobel hops at the forefront with the yeasty breadiness coming in second. No alcohol (5% ABV, as marked on the label) taste or aroma. No diacetyl or dimethylsulfide.
Palate – 3.5 – Medium, a bit heavier than watery, lively carbonation.
Final impression and summation – 4. A decent pilsner. They did warn be that it was “Can conditioned” so I should have popped the top over the sink rather than just standing beside the sink. Oh well, the dishes that didn’t fit in the dishwasher last night took a pilsner plunge today. The label is simple and has the malt and hops bill. I’d drink this again, but I would not order it online – shipping adds 50% to the cost.

    Rating 3.92, rDev +0.3%.

I just played through my first scenario in Planet Coaster. Outstanding game, very big classic RCT vibe, controls, and management layout with some overall improvements. I got the gold star level requirements done, but did not get the Steam achievement. Apparently a common problem in the forums. I will just have to live with it for now. Also bought remastered Age of Empires 2. I am feeling like some RTS recently, but haven't really did anything about it.

Transient Junie Goes Coconuts. Awesome imperial stout. Nice fluffy head retention/spotty foamy lacing. Some coconut floaties. Aromas and flavors of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, toasted coconut, roasted nuts, fudge, and dark/rye bread; with lighter notes of molasses, toffee, licorice, raisin, fig, date, smoke, char, herbal, wood, grass, pepper, and yeast earthiness. Minimal booze in the aromas as it warms. Mild herbal, grassy, roast, charred bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation and very full body; very creamy/silky/velvety/bready malts; light slickness, sticky hops, chalky roast in the mouthfeel. Lightly increasing lingering bitter dryness; no cloying/acrid/astringency. Very smooth/soft, mild increasing warmth of 12.5%, with minimal lingering booze after the finish. Awesome balance of super rich malts, caramel, and coconut flavors; with mild earthy hops and restrained fruity yeast. Light residual sweetness with lingering dryness. Very impressive, just a bit better than the Transient stout I reviewed last week. This was less fruity/boozy. 4.1

Do you like flowers in your beer (and cats)?

Well the flower part has an association here in that hibiscus is part of the ingredients used to brew today’s beer and apparently Tired Hands has an in-office cat named Rosé so they named this beer: Tired Hands Rosé (because the cat likes flowers?).

Below is how this beer is described on BA from 2016 :

“Rosé is a bright and zippy IPA that we brewed with hibiscus flowers, conditioned atop heaps of calamansi and lemon purée, and then dry hopped intensely with Citra, Amarillo, Centennial, and Simcoe.”

Tired Hands likes to brew with ‘artistic freedom’ so I am uncertain whether this batch is 100% consistent with the verbiage above. Part of the fun of drinking Tired Hands beers?

Served in my Gulden Draak tulip glass:

    Appearance:

Quite hazy and pink in color with a 2 finger pinkish hue head.

    Aroma:

The aroma is quite interesting with a combination of tropical fruits, some citrus and even a bit of floral.

    Taste:

The flavors follows the nose: a tasty combination of tropical fruit, citrus and some floral. There is a low/medium bitterness and just a very tiny hint of tartness.

    Mouthfeel:

    A thin-medium body with an off-dry finish.

    Overall:

This beer is very good. I enjoyed drinking it.

    Cheers!

Today’s new beer is Fluffy Tufts, a DIPA from Grimm. The brew presents as a cloudy yellow can pour with a 2 cm cap of soft foam and a mild citrus aroma. The flavor is of orange and some tropical fruit, pineapple and kiwi. The mouthfeel is very smooth and soft. This is pleasant. [IMG]

Today’s new to me beer was not part of yesterday’s trade. I’ve had this bottle of Abraxas (2018) in my chiller for over a year...and surprised at myself for just now getting around to it. From the label, “Ale brewed with Ancho chili peppers, cacao nibs, and cinnamon sticks.” Let’s go!

Pours dark brown, almost black, with ruby edges at 56 degrees; fast, fizzy reddish brown head completely vanishes quickly, leaving no cap retention, no ring and no lacing; medium legs on swirl. Chili peppers and cinnamon up front; cinnamon notes grow stronger throughout. Taste is cinnamon and hot chillies sauce; Baker’s chocolate; vanilla on backend with some roast malt bitterness. Medium light body; moderate minus carbonation; light creamy feel from lactose; lots of heat in mouth from 11.5% abv and chili peppers. Overall, thinner than I expected; the heat from the ancho chili peppers lingers long in my mouth; and with the cinnamon, the two flavors dominate the whole experience; the chocolate and vanilla are merely an afterthought; I like this beer because it delivers as advertised, but an 8oz pour results in palate fatigue. Sadly, a beer that does not live up to its hype.

Smell funky must, champagne, smashed grapes, clove, and pear. 3.5

Taste follows musty, smashed grapes, clove, pear, and champagne. 3.5

Mouthfeel is about medium, plenty of prickly carbonation, a tad dry, and at 7% loaded with flavor, but not a necessarily a pleasant flavor. 4

Overall I am grading this knowing I am not a fan at all of this style and I struggle to understand why anyone is or could be. It is still attractive and well crafted, but sorry not my jam...... 3.5

I thought I would report on a new beer that I found to be interesting enough to order. It's Dricku from Burgsviks bryggeri. It's meant to be a take on Gotlandsdricka (the brewery is on the island of Gotland) and it uses juniper and smoked malt (birch wood smoked I'm assuming). It's 6% abv.

The color of the beer is a hazy reddish brown which is appropriate. When I homebrewed with birchwood smoked malt from Gotland it had the same color as this beer. The aroma of the beer is a bit berry like, I want to say that it smells a bit like homemade strawberry syrup, and somewhat sweet, but not as sweet as syrup, with a distinct aroma from the juniper. I recognize the aroma from juniper soda (enbärsdricka). The smoked malt is also there, but in the background. The flavor is malty with with juniper coming through, again with that berry aspect and some mild smokiness (I'm guessing that the smoked malt makes up a small portion of the overall grainbill of this beer). There is also a balancing hop bitterness, without which I could see this becoming a rather sweet tasting beer.

It is an interesting beer and I think it's tasty.

Good morning NBS and thanks @superspak for the start today. Yesterday was Annual Town Meeting here. So that puts about 5 months of work to bed for another year. Always good to have this in the books as they say. With all thats going on, its nice to have something go well.
Todays offering is from Hill Farmstead, the Cherry variant of Flora. The texture and depth are the highlights for me. With the cherry not dominating its addition is more than welcome.
    Stay well all

    look: 4.25 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

Poured from a 500 ml bottle dated 10/12/2018 into he test glass.
A - Beautiful Rose' color, excellent clarity. The steady column of carbonation steadily creates small islands of off white.
S - Flora is in there for sure, with the Sauvignon Blanc signature, add a load of ripe cherry , signature farmhouse elements.
A bit of rime, some funk on the nose as well.
T - Again Sauvignon Blanc, light oak touch, some tannin, white pepper, apple skin, green grape, cherry skin,
M - Starts out tart, then loosens up a bit with nice mineralty, a chalky wave rides through. Also an ashen dry finish compliments the tart cherry. In the middle a delightful sweet spot where the tart and minerals blend in near perfection. Finish is balanced with a bit of yeast to smooth things out.
O - A beautiful offering to view, the aromatics are stone fruit, white wine, oak, the palate is a treat. All in all a very good variant of Flora

Good Morning NBSers! hope its a relaxing peaceful Sunday for you. Im getting an early start this morning after camping out in the yard with the kids overnight. When they're this young its perfect - all the experience of camping but still just a few steps from home for whatever they'll inevitable need.

My first beer today comes courtesy of the generous @SicDub. Troegs Lollihop - an 8.2% DIPA hopped with citra, mosaic and azacca.
Pours a remarkably bright golden-yellow color. Cloudy, but not at all opaque. Two finger white sudsy head dissipates steadily leaving just splotchy patches of white foam on top of the beer. Aroma is bright with notes of lemon lime, papaya, pineapple and generic orange-citrus. Its not just fruit though - you do get a whiff of that greenish hop aroma.

The flavor is interesting- the hops are prominent, but I was first drawn towards the pale malt backbone. The hops shine on that with notes of lemon-lime, papaya, peach and orange. Bitterness on the back end it really quite mild, but a certain green hop burn builds on itself as the beer is consumed. Feel is light and quite drinkable for an 8%+ DIPA ... Its pretty clean and crisp.

Overall this was delicious - it hit everything I personally like from my DIPAs - not overly sweet, still pretty light and easy drinking. Thanks @SicDub!

The columned structure Does hold Plymouth Rock. It used to be on Main Street of “America’s Hometown”. It has “1620” chiseled into it, unfortunately , the rock has been moved several times as they felt that it deserved a more dignified spot which is in the structure at the shoreline. Not in port is the Mayflower 2, a replica ship of the original . How they survived the ocean crossing crammed in this tiny ship with livestock is truly amazing . They came ashore in Plymouth as they were running low of provisions , primarily they were running out of beer.

william Bradford wrote the following in the ship’s log, “ That night we returned againe a ship board with resolution the next morning to settle on some of those places. So in the morning, after we had called on God for direction, we came to this resolution, to go presently ashore again, and to take a better view of two places which we thought most fitting for us; for we could not now take time for further search or consideration, our victuals being much spent, especially our Beere...”

so one of the first new colony communities to take root was based on a beer run. We owe it to our forefathers to hold this tradition in high esteem and seek out fresh, quality beer

I'd like to start today by letting the NBS world know I think @DoctorZombies is a little crazy. I mean this in wholehearted fun, good sir. I think Abraxas is a world class beer and would easily consider it for a deserted island. Of course, the common disclaimer that we all have our own tastes applies here, but I am also suggesting that Dave give the beer another chance at some point.

His review above made me grab my 2019 bottle to verify my thoughts before attempting to contradict the "does not live up to the hype" statement. First thing I noticed, I get a lovely creamy, deep brown head that sits atop the beer until I start sipping, and provides walls of bubbles each sip hat disperse and slide back to the void at a moderate pace.

I agree with cinnamon being a forefront component, along with earthy coffee aromas in the nose. I also agree the beer is nicely creamy, but find it to be more medium leaning heavy, though it's definitely not thick like many of the low-attenuated pastry stouts out there these days.

The taste is roasted malt coffee with a berry tinge, then many of the notes Dave mentioned, including a light nibble of heat in back that takes a few sips to build up and continues to build throughout. For comparison, I found Mexican Cake to have a more forward, stronger bite (which I enjoyed quite a bit, probably more in that aspect).

The reason I like this beer so much is that the added ingredients don't clamor for attention. They work as accents to or enhancements of a roasted bitter stout. The cocoa nibs likely reinforce this the most, and the vanilla adds a hint of sweetness in back to counter it. The cinnamon adds a bit of spice throughout, with the aforementioned Ancho bite in the end.

Anyhow, this is NOT A NEW BEER for me (though it is a new re-review, I guess), but I just wanted to offer a counter review for the sake of comparison/contrast. As stated, my disagreement is done with a wink and a nod to @DoctorZombies as I respectfully disagree with him. Cheers to him and to all yous. I'll be back with an actual new beer before long.

Thanks @superspak for getting NBS rolling.
Back from an early morning hike with the dogs. In the hour we were gone the temperature went from 69 to 80, so the rest of the day will either be indoors or poolside.
I have a stout I was ready to review, but was too hot for that, so I opted for this "German style pilsner" from De Novo. It was a good decision.
Clear gold color. Small white head that retains well. Some lace.
Aroma of floral hops and crackers.
Taste follows the nose. Floral hops and crackers.
    Crisp and refreshing.
