Found Ayninger Altbairisch Dunkel for the first time. Their Bavarian Dark Lager. 5.0% ABV.

Pours a dark ruby/brown color. A dense beige head forms, rising to over two fingers. Good retention and some lace left behind.
Aroma is a bit muted at first, though it just takes a little bit to open up. Once this warms, all the baked bread goodness come out that I love. Soft brown bread, doughy malts. A bit of toffee in the nose as well. Wonderful.
Taste wise, like the nose, that nuanced malt character is amazing. Its like walking into a bakery. Doughy malts, brown bread. Toffee, a bit of dark fruits, just enough earthy hops to balance.
A medium body, and moderate carbonation. Soft and velvety smooth. Finishes on a sweeter note, but not cloying at all. Downed in big gulps, and am wondering how I finished it so quickly. Looking for more.

This is one were it really helps to let this warm. As it opens up beautifully. As usual for Ayinger, the malt character is on another level. This is the first time I have seen this on the shelf around me, I don't know why this has been hiding from me, but I'll be searching for it from now on.

Overall score is 4.29, easy A for me.

AleSmith Brewing Company - Speedway Stout

Imperial Stout with coffee, from America (12%).

Pours a pitch-black coloration with a large, creamy, mocha-colored head. Smells of roasted, caramel malt and coffee and chocolate, as well as lighter dark fruit and hints of licorice and tobacco.

Taste is an excellent balance of roasted, caramel malt and distinct coffe and dark chocolate, as well as some dark fruit, with notes of fig and plum, and hints of licorice, tobacco and herbal, bitter hops. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some chocolate, coffee, dark fruit and tobacco lingerin in the aftertaste. Full mouthfeel with a medium/rich body and low/medium carbonation.

This makes for a very enjoyable coffee stout with distinct, but not overdone chocolate, coffee and dark fruit notes, while I suspect that a lot of the chocolate and dark fruit comes from the coffee as well as the malts. At the same time, there's a very good roasted and bitter presence to this as well, with some roasted malts and herbal hops, which is just the kind of flavor profile that I'm looking for from a beer like this.

It's very well-balanced, with some lightly sweet notes from the dark fruit and caramel malt, as well as more roasted malt and bitter, herbal hops, as well as hints of licorice and tobacco. Also, the ABV is hardly noticeable here, with this drinking very smooth, with a great body and mouthfeel.

I decided to go go to my local - Back Shed Brewing - and try one of their new beers.

I do not have a lot of experience with this style, though I have some - 11 reviewed here. I am not a supertaster. I do have problems sometimes describing the flavors well. That being said, I was quite happy with what they made. Fruity flavors, earthy, candy flavors, and a feeling that told you to sip this, but no burn or boozy. This was delicious. Now that I've signed up for NBS 16, to let my future target know, you're getting beers from this brewery.

Clear golden pour with a white head when poured from the tap. There's nice lacing on the glass as I drink the beer.
Nose is slightly funky, earthy, and has a hint of fruit in it.
Taste is earthy, slightly funky, has s hint of fruit in it. There's some candy flavor that hits on the back and lingers.
Solid full body, and, while not boozy, tells you that it's a sipper.
I don't have too much experience with this style, I can say that they've done a good job with it. It is delicious.

All right, this will be my last new beer of the weekend, and I've got to go back to cleaning out my fridge. Cheers to all who post here.

What a delight to find freshly canned lager. Today’s selection, their German style Pilsner, was canned 08/16. It pours a translucent straw gold with a light thin white cap. Aroma in glass is of fermenting dough, fresh cut hayfield, floral spice, dried chamomile blossoms. Taste follows nose with lovely doughy yeast bread. It is dry and crisp, medium bodied, with a firm inviting bitterness. I have been enjoying this brewery’s lager offerings. Their cans are also tasteful—not obnoxious. And I have a love for crows so their logo is wonderful.

    18th Street Brewery - Rubicon

West Coast IPA with Centennial and Amarillo hops, from America (7.2%).

Pours a cloudy, golden amber coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of biscuity, slightly caramelly malt and floral, resinous, citrus/tropical hops, with notes of tangerine, pineapple and pine.

Taste is a great balance of biscuity, slightly caramelly malt and fruity, floral, resinous hops, with citrus and tropical notes of grapefruit, tangerine and pineapple, as well as some pine also coming through. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some tangerine, pineapple and pine lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

This is the first proper WCIPA I've had in a while and maybe I'm overrating it slightly simply because I get to drink so few great examples of the style, but these are so hard to come by in Germany and I've really enjoyed it. There's good balance of malt and hops to this, with a light caramel backbone and nice, resinous bitterness, as well as some citrus and lighter tropical fruit notes. Overall, this makes for a great West Coast IPA despite being brewed with Amarillo hops, a variety I don't typically enjoy for the style.

My new to me beer today - Taxman Brewing Company, Bargersville IN “Hazelnut Latte Deadline” (2022) a Belgian-style imperial stout:

Poured at 51°. Canned . Black with ruby see through. Fizzy tan head with some rocks that disappeared quickly leaving a small island of micro dots and a thin ring. Very small spots of lace and no legs on swirl. Sweet malt and coriander nose; some nuttiness as beer warmed. Clove and boozy hazelnut; very little vanilla, oak or bourbon. Hot alcohol burn on tip of tongue; light body, moderate minus carbonation; face flushing warmth from 13.7% abv; watery feel. Overall, this is a semi-sweet beer; some nuttiness, but the Belgian aspect is the dominant flavor.

Maybe the clovey flavor will mellow over time. Cheers y’all!

Sorry to hear that. As mentioned above, it's never easy. We're in a similar situation with the older dog, as previously mentioned. He had a good response to a prednisone pulse, but has since deteriorated again. My sister in law is throwing us a baby shower today, and the hope was that he (Boo Radley, the dog) would be able to come down and say goodbye to their family one last time, but unfortunately he just really isn't up for the trip down to the city at this point. They all got to see him this spring, though, when he was doing much better, so at least there's that closure.

At this point I think my wife is just holding out until the baby gets here so they can meet each other, but then it may be time for him to settle in for his final nap. Then we'll plant her fig tree over him at my parents' place, and maybe it will actually bear fruit for once, ha!
There's so much beauty in having an animal companion, and sometimes that beauty is painful. Wouldn't trade it for anything, though.
(also, I'll be seeing you soon over in that other thread you posted...)

    Matchless - Tumwater Premium

16oz can served in a footed pilsner glass. Can is not dated, as far as I can tell. Got it recently from a CSA.

Pours clear light golden with about a finger of head that settles quickly into a fine, even skin. Smell is grainy, a little yeasty doughiness, light grassiness.

Taste is moderate bready/grainy sweetness, a little honeysuckle, a little grass.

Mouthfeel is maybe a tad on the heavy side. Overall, this is pretty nice, and would be good in quantity on a hot day a long as it was cold enough -- otherwise the sweetness might get a bit oppressive.

Not really the chance yet to catch up with the thread but wanted to contribute. This is my favorite local Festbier/Marzen

    Tines by Fox Farm

Pours the part, golden hued, fluffy white head, slow moving carb, just a great looking pale lager. Smell is predominantly of sweet malt upfront, leading into some herbal spiciness, There's a good amount of pepper upfront, almost arugula-like, leading into a grape must and capsicum, smells good.

Upfront is a really complex malt bill, pushing through spice and sweet malt sugar. It's supremely balanced, better than anything I've had this year upfront. Devolves into an equally balanced blend of hop character, specifically that would be full-rounded herbaceous blending with spicy, pronounced adjectives. It's a lovely take. The finish is all delicious sweet malt and clean, spicy hop character. Helluva beer.

Enjoy, and cross your fingers for the Giants. Perhaps the tines will attach to good favor for them.

Good Sunday afternoon, New Beer Sippers and commentators. One of my most awaited beer days of the year is Rushing Duck Brewing Co.'s annual anniversary celebration. As those who read my posts know, this brewery is very special to me. I stand by my frequently-made statement that no northeast brewery is more adept at blending Strong Ales, Stouts, and Barleywines.

This year I had to miss RD's 10th anniversary due to family obligations and vacation. So I was very happy that the special anniversary releases were still available yesterday. It was a glorious, late summer afternoon in Chester, NY. One of the new releases, "Ten," is an English Barleywine aged in bourbon barrels with cocoa and coconut. It is modeled after a cookie. It's very sweet - a bit more than I like but the flavors are big and bold.

It pours a dense, opaque orange-brown color. The khaki-colored head fizzled away almost immediately. It's quite effervescent. The aromatic nose features the traditional Barleywine aromas of caramel/toffee, brown sugar, raisin, and plum but adds nice doses of cocoa and coconut. The bourbon smell is subtle. The taste opens very sweet and the influence of the chocolate and coconut is strong. There is also a strong brown sugar and toffee presence. The flavors of raisin and dark fruit are a bit overwhelmed by the other adjuncts. You can taste the bourbon influence but it's subtle with modest warming. The mouth feel is super rich and creamy - almost chewy. While it seemed very effervescent when poured, the carbonation level is moderate. There is no escaping the 13.4% ABV; it's very much a sipper. Ten is a very good English Barleywine if you can handle the sweetness. It's a perfect dessert sipper and welcome in the autumn months. It will be interesting to see how it ages.

I'll probably send a bottle out in the upcoming BIF and then wait till the holidays to see how it evolves. Next up is RD's special IPA release. Cheers!

I said I was going with some weird choices today. And what's weirder than a 10% ABV bourbon barrel aged Oktoberfest?

How about a Rum Barrel-Aged Belgian Tripel with Mango Puree, Coconut, and Vanilla?

    Yeah, that's weirder.

Much like the Founders Ultimate Oktoberfest I reviewed earlier today, this is a bit too boozy, and a strange concoction. This one, however strange, is definitely tastier. It's also not something I'd be likely to revisit, as it similarly doesn't quite have a niche (and I don't like rum). It's more like a carbonated tropical rum drink than a beer (much less a tripel), but it works.

Good afternoon, and welcome to New Beer Sunday #916! As promised, back with part two featuring the two new to me beers from the Beachwood drop in Chicago. The LBC stands for Long Beach Community, the home of Beachwood Brewing!

    Beachwood LBC IPA

    Can Notes:
$16.53 four pack purchased refrigerated at The Beer Temple on 9/7, refrigerated upon returning home until cracking open this afternoon. 16 oz canned 8/11/22, 7.1% ABV. True To Beer

Brewer online notes: LBC IPA is a legit west coast-style India Pale Ale brewed to celebrate our famous home in the City of Long Beach. A large dose of kettle and dry "C-Hops" give this beer a juicy flavor profile with a dank & sticky aroma.

Appearance: Multiple pours into a shaker pint glass. Clear golden straw color pour, very light for an IPA. Light also is the carbonation. Creamy egg white foam lingers a few minutes before leaving a dusting in its wake. Nominal lacing slinks back into the glass. 4.0

    Aroma:
Getting a tropical aroma, grapefruit and melon, backed by medium plus dankness. Medium in strength, nice. 3.75

    Taste:
Consistent with aromas, juicy grapefruit, a dash of citrus and lemon, less dank than the nose, but comes on stronger midway through the pour. Light easy and mellow. More "modern take" on WC Style. More malty / bready than a typical WC and typical Beachwood IPA. Good. 3.75

    Mouthfeel:
Mildly dry and bitter, overall perception vs. the sweet tastes. Drinks at the ABV level, strong but not overwhelming. Carbonation felt more (light to mild fizzy) than seen. Easy clean finish, dryness lingers a bit, even after pairing with a water sidecar. 3.5

    Overall:
This is a good WCIPA, though would chalk this up to a modern take and not a traditional version. Sort of a let down after Soul Man which is OG WCIPA to the max, but this is a good beer none the less. Would drink again, but not a must seek out beer with so many other beers available at Beachwood. 3.75

Going to catch up on the thread and enjoy the rest of the day. Cheers all!

A lovely copper orange body with a fluffy head. Despite light lacing, an attractive beer.

Nose is a wonderful nutty toasted malt with hints of caramel sweetness.

Taste substantially follows nose with a lesser malt nuttiness and a rise in sweetness. Nothing too sweet but just a toasted malt sweetness

Good mouth feel and carbonation makes this one, as intended, an easy drinker.
