Would your church be inclined to have an "Oktoberfest" gathering fundraiser. My parents church, Lutheran, had one with a silent auction. It was pretty successful. The Oktoberfest aspect was light, very family friendly, but it's become a thing and the auction was added this year. I'm not even a member and I dropped $160.

    16 ounce can packaged 09/25/23.

Vigorous pour yields a 1/8 inch mocha head over a near black body with scant lacing.

Nose of dark malt, vanilla, and slight coffee and a bit of milk chocolate.

Taste of coffee, vanilla, and milk chocolate; finishing with slightly bitter coffee and bitter chocolate.

Feel is good with nearly medium carbonation.

Overall, pretty tasty and I would have another!
    Cheers!!

Thanks - we have got to try something different. They might be open to it. Our supper events go well and raise a lot. They are sit down, strongly supported by members. The holiday fair is really hit or miss, largely street traffic less likely to buy from vendors AND support a fund raiser. Historically, we've made 1500 to 2000 from the kitchen. This year, 800 the first day and I think we'll be lucky if we break a grand when all gets counted. Our music budget got cut, so its doubly painful. The missus and I dont ask for reimbursement for the food we provide, which we've always treated as a gift to the church - we won't be able to afford that soon enough. An October fest would be more like the sit downs and i think more welcoming. Crafters and their followers are "different". The only thing I can think of as a barrier is insurance - not sure we can have alcohol on church property in MA, but I know it has been done off site by other churches. Or we figure out a way to do it non-traditionally without beer. It could be outside, too, which is great exposure.

Hoping to stop by a bot more often now that things have somewhat quieted down around here.

Equilibrium Pale Ale ? IPA? 5.5% ABV; 4.01 overall

Pours an effervescent & hazy gold with one finger of cream-colored head. Pretty good head retention & lacing

S: A little catty, some citrus

T: Follows the nose, dry, a kiss of woody hops & green melon up front, tangerine asserts itself. Pomelo, lime, dryness, some pineapple as this beer warms up. Finishes with tangerine, green melon & dryness

MF: Medium body, minimal carbonation, good balance

Easy to drink good flavor, so-so nose & loads of floaties

SweetWater Gummies Tropical IIPA; 9.5% ABV; 3.42 overall

Pours an effervescent & bright gold with a pinky of beige colored head. Nice head retention & lacing

Sweet cherry Kool-Aid, strawberries, all kind of mellow out to something pleasant & not fake

T: Sorta follows the nose, a hit of green melon, booze, a kiss of pineapple up front. Pineapple, coconut, green melon & boozy bite as this beer warms up. Finishes with a sharpish booze gummi beer that has strawberry, green melon & lime

MF: Firm carbonation, medium body that soon turns prickly from the booze, super sticky on the teeth

Not the future of 2XIPA, okay as a one-off, one & done. Not horrible & certainly gets you to buzz-town quickly FWIW

this is Fremont 13th Anniversary Barleywine from 2022. A blended bourbon Barrel aged beer at 13.6% ABV. Barrels are Heaven Hill Bourbon. This is a beer sent to me from @Dimidiata as part of the BSBIF #1 festivities. Thank you!!

    onto my review:

Sampling a cellar temp 22 oz bottle poured into my snifter. The beer pours a bright clear golden color and rests in my glass a rich copper hue. Soft creamy khaki colored head of about 2.5 cm foams up and fades to a sturdy surface covering. This foam sticks around through my entire sampling.
The aroma on this beer is malts and spicy booze. I get red grape and plums with a good amount of black peppery spicy booze note and some hints of bourbon and a little toffee. Pretty complex nose, that doesnt hide the booziness of this treat.
First sip reveals a medium body, with very smooth texture and fine tingly carbonation. The beer drinks much easier than I thought it would. Not really too sticky or syrupy like big barleywines can be. Flavor is a complex and very fruity to my palate. I get grapes , plums and some pear here. A good bit of bourbon comes in , but its not very sweet and does carry a little toffee as well. Some boozy flavor comes in on the finish, but there isnt any accompanying warming notes. I dont believe there is any hop character showing up on this beer. Its a tasty treat that drinks easier than it should. Glad to have tried this tasty barleywine.

Here we go with Barreled Souls - Put A Bird On It from a surprise box @sulldaddy sent as part of Impy/OtherBeer BIF :heavymetal:

Poured this in a glass and it was Cola color and settled black with almost no head. Maybe 2cm tops.
Nose is heavy dark chocolate and tickles my nose from what i assume is the alcohol content.
Taste is big time cocoa, vanilla and licorice . It settles there and stays consistent .
Drinks easier than i thought it would due to my nose pickin up heat .

Thanks brotha, this will be all gone soon

Late night west coast crew rolling in to finish up this stellar NBW thread. Had to work this morning, so drinking got started a bit later than planned.

Opening mystery beer #2 from @DIM from the barleywine/stout BIF!

Mystery can 16oz at 58F from the cellar temp fridge

appearance - dark opaque brown with a small amount frothy mocha head that settles into a nice ring leaving a bit of lacing behind as we go

nose - caramel malts but also getting some spicy notes, dark brown sugar, dark fruits, cherry cordials, alcohol (not barrel aged just indicative of a high abv). Initial thought was barleywine, but now I'm wondering quad/barleywine blend? gonna have to investigate further

taste - nah, this a barleywine, I'm pretty darn sure (unless it's some sort of blend that includes a barleywine...), flavor follows the nose except the spicy notes are citrusy? I'm getting definitely some bitter dark chocolate here, is this one of them adjuncted barleywines?

feel - medium body, minimal carb, quite a bit of alcohol heat and bitterness on the finish

Guessing a non-BA barleywine in the 11-13% abv range. There's something else going on here but I can't put my finger on it.

    Reveal:

Spring House Brewing - Waiting on a Breakthrough (13% abv)

"Black Barleywine conditioned w/ a 1/4lb/bbl of Indonesian vanilla beans from Flores"

Well, I wasn't too far off. There were adjuncts (vanilla) and it's a black barleywine so darker chocolately malts, but also an American barleywine which explains the bitter citrusy hops I also got. Big alcohol, no barrel aging.

Now that I know there's vanilla, I can smell it and get that vanilla extract-y taste that my brain translated into "chocolate".

Thanks for the flavor puzzle, Dan! Also a great nightcap with this warm alcohol to lull me to sleep.
