    Hello Late Night NBW
Just had this new one from Fresno, CA.
    Captain Save A Hop
    Canned 02/13/2024
Yep, pours hazy as advertised. A very fluffy head commands my attention and requires a slowing of the pour. Slight lacing but the retention drops off after a minute or so.
Nose is juicy. Pineapple, citrus zest, and some wet grass and gentle herbal notes finally peek in.
Flavor is a slightly subdued version of the nose. A fine blend of the citrus zest and pineapple really rides the fluffy mouthfeel.
The mouthfeel really does give a nod to that pillowy texture that a solid NEIPA should have.

    Black Friday
    15.5% barleywine by Hoppin’ Frog

Poured from a pint can, the body is an opaque brown with minimal head and lacing.

Aroma is sweet caramel malt and booze.

Taste follows nose but everything is amped up. The black treacle imparts a strong molasses flavor and its residual sweetness lingers. Offsetting the treacle is barrel, vibrant and strong as one might expect given its ABV. The body carries a nice bitterness and notes of oak. What this barleywine lacks in subtlety is made up for by clarity.

Mouthfeel is coating and approaches cloying. Carbonation is light.

Not for the faint of heart, boozy barleywine drinkers will delight. If you prefer your barleywines on the softer side, then steer clear.

Old Youth from Highland Park. A blend of barleywine and stout aged in bourbon. Comes in at 14.9% ABV

Poured from a bottle at fridge temp. Pours black with no head. The nose is amazing. Beautiful mix of chocolate, toffee, roasted malts, vanilla, brown sugar, and bread.

The taste is full of roasted malts, black licorice, dark toffee, molasses, bourbon, vanilla, maple, and tons of dark fruit. Blackberries, blueberries, and raisins. Love beer overall. The ABV is incredibly well hidden.

Stonecloud Queen of the Slams Hazy DIPA w/Sabro, Idaho 7 & Citra Hops, 8.0% ABV; 4.25 overall

Pours a very hazed gold with a thumb+ of cream colored head. Insane lacing & good head retention

S: Citrus, faint breadyness, pretty good nose, just doesn't keep up with the rest of the beer

T: Powdery dryness, tangerines, grapefruit & a little breadyness up front. Grapefruit, pineapple, a touch of green melon as this beer warms up. Finishes with pineapple, limes, guava & passion fruit

MF: Medium body, restrained carbonation, great balance

Another banger of a Juicy DIPA from these guys, superb drinkability

Daughter's 13th birthday party complete. Spent three hours in the office this afternoon for a meeting with my Japanese parent company's upper management, the culmination of a very stressful six weeks or so. All is good now. Time to relax with a tasty new-to-me beer.

16oz can served in a curvy pint glass. Can is dated 02/05/2024. @jonphisher sent it to me.

Pours very dark brown, clear, light gets through, but not much. Medium sized head. Smell is nuts and grain, maybe some earthy/barky bitterness.

Taste is interesting. Nutty, bready sweetness, a bitterness that reminds me of that brown paper like material you find in walnuts (I think?), some resinous bitterness.

Mouthfeel is rich and full. This is a very nice brown.

Epic Brewing big Bad Baptist Choclate Caramel Sea Salt aged in Whiskey Barrels, 12% ABV; 3.97 overall

Pours an effervescent chestnut/mahogany with one finger of mocha colored head. Nice lacing & near average head retention

S: Caramel, vanilla, a touch of booze; getting some artificial scents in this

T: Follows the nose, but the booze is more front & center, carob & coffee notes, barrel meanness/rawness as well up front. Plenty of Caramel, some vanilla, sea salt & dark chocolate with boozy edge as this beer warms up, barrel dryness too. Finishes uber sweet with a little coffee, plus barrel warmth & smack

MF: Medium body, fairly firm carbonation, pretty warming. Gets chewier as this warms up

Had the potential for greatness, some of the flavors seemed somewhat forced, not totally natural or in balance. Better once near room temperature

Drank pretty well for the style & heft, but a sipper for sure. Headed towards my sweet tooth wheel hose, just hits some curbs on the way

Before diving in, I would like to thank the Moderator who reopened the thread, consistent with our custom to enjoy an extra day on holiday weekends. Hope everyone may have time and opportunity to enjoy and share one more new beer today in honor of President’s Day.

I also enjoyed all the beers pulled yesterday to celebrate our 19th year with our Sunday / Weekend custom of sharing our beer experiences and celebrating conversations and life with fellow Beer Advocates.

I bought this early in my trip in Vegas to share with my brother, but we never got to it, so I took advantage of the extra bags brought to share gifts with the nephews to bring this one and a few others home.

    de Garde BuVeaux (2023)

    Bottle Notes:
Purchased 1/14/24 on store shelf at Khoury's in Las Vegas, Nevada for $17.39, stored at room temperature until refrigerating after arriving home on 1/25/24 until opening this morning. 25.4 oz, 3.9% ABV, bottled February, 2023. A Spontaneous Wild Ale Aged in Oak Barrels for Two Years. Brewed & Bottled by de Garde Brewing, Tillamook, Oregon.

Appearance: Poured about 8 oz into a large tulip glass. Generous bubbly bright white decadent head lingers for a few minutes before leaving a soapy cover over the base with no lacing. Persistent heavy carbonation through the lemon yellow orange cloudy base. Looks great! 4.25

Aroma: Lay down the funk! Funky tart lemon, wet wool horse blanket, citrus follows. Nothing much further detected, but strong, bold and very enticing. 4.5

    Taste:
More tart than even the high levels detected in the nose. Really puckered up first sips, but enjoying the tart lemon and light citrus blend. Lemon grass, oak and white wine follow, light salt and pepper notes detected if I concentrate. Beer mellows after acclimating and warming about 15 minutes beyond opening. 4.25

Mouthfeel: Carbonation holds up throughout, but gentle pillowy on the feel, adding minimal depth the a light thin to watery body. Acidic impact mild plus. Drinks very easy consistent with the ABV, with a nice lemon bar finish. 4.0

Overall: This is a simple, but very enjoyable beer. Mellows and balances out relatively shortly into the experience. I like lemon, and this hits my taste spots. May pour a bit more before capping and enjoying the remainder tomorrow, though without discipline I can easily finish this now between the light alcohol, mouthfeel and enjoyable flavors. de Garde keeps on delivering! 4.25

    Good Morning NBW (Extended version)
This was a bit of an experiment. While gluten free is not needed for myself, I know it is for some. This one wasn't too bad.
    Glutenberg IPA
    From a 16 oz can.
Pretty good looking but the end retention drops off significantly.
Aromas of citrus zest, maybe pineapple, and grass are upfront. But the follow up has a corn sweetness coupled with a muted, earthy grain.
Flavor starts off with initial hint of hops, citrus and a hint of pine. But then the grain comes in. Less sweet than hinted at by the nose, almost biscuity, but again a pop of that corn sweetness.
Mouthfeel is slick and a tad thin, low carbonation.
Overall I rate this as an IPA. GF or not, it just doesn't knock my socks off. Having said that, for somebody who needs GF, it does deliver a bit of hops.

On this extended NBW on Presidents Day, I would like to take this opportunity to say "Thank You" to former president Jimmy Carter for creating exemption from taxation for beer brewed at home or for family use back in 1978 by signing bill H. R. 1337 which had an amendment sponsored by democratic senator Alan Cranston of California. Thanks Jimmy & Alan!!

Good afternoon, Weekenders! Yesterday I took on Tree House's Citra Many Ways, Part One, a single-hop Citra beer with hops from Yakima Valley.

I wasn't up to the task of going after any other Citra-only beers after that one, so today I'm getting to Part Two, which sources its hops from St. Paul, Oregon.

    Painted Hills

Since this isn't a true side-by-side, I can really only go off of memory and my reviewing notes to compare differences (if there are any differences). That's obviously sub-optimal if you really wanted to pick apart any minute differences, but there's nothing wrong with just reviewing the beer in your glass, after all.

Disclaimer aside, I do think there's a difference here. Part One is absolutely classic Citra - which perhaps makes sense, given that Citra originated in Yakima Valley, and it seems likely that most Citra-hopped beers are using Yakima Valley Citra hops.

Part Two is less obviously Citra, both on the nose and the palate, although if tasted blind I'm not sure I would think it's anything else, specifically.

Citrus notes are prominent on the nose, in particular orange. Already, that makes it stand out just a touch; I always get a ton of citrus on the nose from Citra hops, but normally it's not so orange-dominant. Lightly and brightly herbal with light but noticeable dankness; that all checks the Citra boxes for me.

On the palate, Citra normally does a bit of a reversal for my palate, with tropical fruit notes leading the way and the citrus flavors taking more of a back seat. That doesn't really happen here. Tropical fruit notes do emerge (peach, mango, papaya), but I'm still getting citrus notes in at least a 50/50 split (with orange still leading the way). Lightly dank (less so than Part One); touches of cream and vanilla.

This is excellent, delicious, and another great example of Citra hops, and I do think it's different from Part One. Just how different? Again, without doing a true side-by-side, it's impossible to say for sure, but I think it's different enough to notice.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/28743/689999/?ba=Roguer#lists
4.41 / +1.8% (only full review out of two ratings)

And for comparison, here was my review for Part One:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/28743/689997/?ba=Roguer#lists
4.43 / -0.7% (only full review out of four ratings)

The numbers are pretty darn similar, too! Anecdotally, I think I actually like Part Two more, despite the very slightly lower rating, but not enough more to warrant bumping up the score in flavor. Plus, my liking it more is more or less due to an even more restrained dankness, but most hop heads love that about Citra, so I can't well penalize Part One for being perhaps a better pure example of Citra.

    Cheers!
