Welcome to another edition of NBW! With the Baltic Porter thread (hosted by @beergoot ) also happening now, there might be some cross-listing here. I'll kick off the thread with Entropy Series No. 36 - Pro Goon from Dageraad Brewing in Vancouver (Canada). A Belgian strong golden ale aged in Okanagan whiskey barrels. Comes in at 11.9% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a murky brownish orange. The nose is honey, honey dew, toffee, bourbon, pear, slight candy sweetness, and vanilla.

The taste is really nice. Vanilla cream, caramel, bourbon, bread, lemon, honey, a bit of wheat, slight banana, and slight maple candy. Really nice beer!

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a mildly sweet caramel aftertaste. Would definitely buy again.

Thank you for hosting this weekend’s edition Mr. @Beersnake , which someday you need to explain that BA name, that could be an interesting story.

Gifted with canned date of summer 2024. Delivers as advertised: pours golden translucent with a rich 1 finger head that reduced quickly. Hmmm, aroma is fruity. Taste is a very tart sweet, with some smacky. Underripe mango?, lemony, Club crackers. Feels tart again, clean and very drinkable. It’s a very good Sour!

My buddy @woodchipper sent me this one. Thanks

Heavy reel premium lite lager. I dont know if I would have gone with premium, maybe, its not bad lager
....unbelievably clear light gold appearance with one of the longest lasting heads I've seen on a beer
...medium carbonation with a below average body
...aroma is yeast upfront, then yeasty crusty bread, toast, light cereal
...taste has a mild sweetness but theres also an earthy vegetable bitterness. Theres toast and yeast but much more mild than the aroma suggested.
..overall it is pretty decent for a light lager. Now if you are rewarding yourself after a long day you might want to upgrade to a more substantial beer[IMG]

    Hello New Beer Weekend!!!

Welcome from the tundra that is central Minnesota in January. I wasn't sure I was going to be here tonight because tomorrow is the St. Cloud Craft Beer Festival. Yes, this old man is going to be having a lot of beers tomorrow, but, I decided, why not have one tonight as the temp falls off the cliff.

This one is thanks to @CanConPhilly , who sadly no longer ventures here.

    Persephone - Mortalis Brewing - Avon, NY - Imperial IPA - 8%

This is quite delicious. Very nice flavors from the hops. Lots of depth from this beer, and I'm so glad I had the opportunity to try it.

From a 16oz can. There appears to be a date on the can, but it's smudged beyond recognition.

This is a very murky looking beer and very juicy looking. It is a creamy yellow color with a 1 finger white head. The head is fluffy looking and looks soft as a cloud. The head retention is good and the lacing on the glass looks quite sticky.
The aroma is tropical in nature from the hops. Good hits of melon in here as well as tropical pineapple. I also get an earthy aroma coming from the hops.
Taste - Very earthy hit starts it off for me. The earthy morphs into a tropical flavor profile. I get melon in here and a hit of pineapple. I am getting a grapefruit flavor on the finish with some bitterness. Some melon sweetness mixes with the bitterness.
The hops do stick and cling in my throat, and I am burping up hops. Very sticky feeling. Somewhat creamy and silky feeling. nice feeling on the back from the bitterness.
Very tasty and well made IPA.

This is all for tonight. I have to get rested up. If I am not too blotto, I know Bad Habit has a beer at the fest I've not had before, and I'll try to do a review. Cheers!

Guilt Trip from Winterlong Brewing in Whitehorse, Yukon. An American barleywine coming in at 9% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours an opaque orange with a reddish tint. The nose is straight up American barleywine. Hoppy (citrus and pine) coupled with a mild sweetness. Apple, caramel, bubble gum, and fruity candy.

The taste is freaking awesome. Reminds me a lot of Old Guardian, but with a bit more fruit. Bitterness is strong - mostly citrus peel. Caramel makes a statement as well. Pine needles, orange, strawberry candy, and a bitter leather note that comes through on the aftertaste. I'm really digging this beer.

Thanks for kicking off the weekend for us @Beersnake!
Tonight I have one that is actually from last year that I had been saving for our stout appreciation group but the last Epic I had wasn’t what I expected so went ahead and drank it.
The pour was stout black a barely there brown head, appropriate for the ABV but I gave it extra credit for leaving sheets of lacing that are still there after I finished and then some.
The taste is, well, apparently typical Epic. The last couple I’ve have had from them have been a bit peaty, but this one is less so than several. Coffee and chocolate, dark fruit and a little whiskey edge.
The feel is appropriately viscous, very nice sipper.
OA, while it wasn’t the rye whiskey punch I was looking for, it’s a tasty stout.

Drowned lands water elm rice lager.
...a bit cloudy super pale light gold appearance
...medium light carbonation with about the same for the body.
...aroma seems to have rice show up but also some other grain with it perhaps being mildly toasted. Most people probably never baked with this but it reminds me if rice syrup, product used in health food bakeries
....taste is mildly sweet, grainy, cereal with again that rice syrup.
....its interesting, well done and if in the mood for a low abv beer it hits the spot[IMG]

Back at it with a light lager from Greenwich brewery
...very clear light amber appearance with zero head
....light carbonation with a close to medium body
...aroma is mellow but malt, cereal, grain, and q very mild fruit pastry element
...taste has a nice sweetness but not over done with cereal and grain that coat the mouth and lingers
..for a light beer I really enjoyed it[IMG]

Have a good NBW. Had a good evening so far. The lunch had me stuffed up for a few hours and some . Finished the Joe HIll book The Fireman, and started The Dark Half by Stephen King. Got some new strains from the smoke shop for a relaxing weekend as well.

The quesadilla was way bigger than I expected. I still have the whole California burrito plate as leftovers. (munchies)

Duck-Rabbit Oh, No Let’s Go! Great head retention and lacing. Wow this is fantastic. Aromas of milk chocolate, cocoa, vanilla, cream, dark bread, wood, herbal, grass, and pepper. Flavors of big milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, vanilla, cream, dark bread/crust, toast, nuts, pine, wood, herbal, grass, pepper, light coffee/smoke/molasses/char. Light-medium pine, woody, charred bitter finish. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body. Very creamy/silky/bready malts/lactose, lingering sticky hop and chalky roasted drying. No acrid/astringent flavors. Great lactose body and texture. Rich malt complexity, minimal warming 5.7%. Very clean finishing, and refreshingly easy drinking. 4.25/5

Flying Dog Double Dog Juicy DIPA. Canned 10/26/2024. Hazy ruby red color, great dense head retention and soapy lacing on the glass. Aromas of big red grapefruit juice, tangerine, mandarin, apricot, pineapple, mango, melon, citrus rind, peppercorn, wood, pine, caramel, bread, herbal, floral, grass, yeast earthiness. Taste of big red grapefruit juice, tangerine, mandarin, peach, mango, papaya, citrus peel, pine, caramel, bread, herbal, floral, grass, yeast earthiness. Large sized pine, citrus rind, spicy bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full body. Balanced creamy/bready malts and sticky/resinous hop mouthfeel. Lingering resin dryness with minimal hop astringency. Increasing warmth/booze after the finish of 12%. Keeps the aggressive bitterness like the base beer with much more hop juiciness with Citra, El Dorado, and Eclipse hop flavors. No complaints! I haven't had a double dog in years. 4.03/5

First new beer of the weekend is..

Mother Earth - Bourbon Barrel-Aged Triple Berry Imperial Stout [Four Seasons Series]

P - black, sm tan cap, quick recession, no lacing to speak of
N - med dark choc and jammy berry notes, both sharp and sweet, more cocoa as it warms
T - wow this is good, choc, smooth blackberry, raspberry, and a touch of vanilla, just a bit of tartness and barrel lingers in the fin, 11.8% abv is exceptionally well-hidden
Mf - creamy, med-bod, med to med high carb (but smooth), prickly at times, however glides across the tongue gracefully for the most part
O - a pleasant surprise- even better than expected, really digging it!

    Can date: 12.08.23

    Cheers, BAs!

A pair of "Tropical" IPAs from Oregon: Tropicano Tropical IPA (Experimental Hop #586) from Crux and Beak Breaker Tropical DIPA from Pelican.

The Tropicano has a slight malty taste and sweetness with a hint of honey. Spicy with notes of cucumber, blueberry, and maybe papaya. Finishes with some dankness and a peppery bite. This is a quite interesting brew with distinct hoppy flavors but restrained intensity.

The Beak Breaker has some dark flavors along with hints of pineapple, though I don't think "tropical" while sipping. Some berries, tangerine, and then the citrus peel. This is actually quite drinkable, with fruity flavors and restrained bitterness. Nor is the alcohol very much in your face, though eventually you realize it's a little hot as it slides down the gullet.

Good day BAs! Thanks @Beersnake for this weekend's opening! It must be nice to have access to so many brews from the Great White North! For me, it's a semi-local from the Philly area:

Only Void from Tired Hands. 16 fl oz can, $ 7.00, $ 0.438/fl oz. Picked up at Franklin Beer, Franklin, PA, 08/01/25. Reviewed 18/01/25 (Review 3448). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Bottom of can stamped “NOTHING 10/14/2024.” Stored in reefer at the distributor, at 39 degrees F at home. Served at 53.4 degrees F in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature was 58.6 degrees F.
    Appearance – 4 – unfiltered.
First pour – Deep Amber (SRM 15), nearly opaque.
Body – Black (SRM 40), opaque. Under direct light, same, but loads of precipitate are visible. When rear-lite, same but reddish at the edges.
Head: Average (Maximum 1.5 cm, aggressive center pour), caramel, high density. Quickly drops to a 0.2 cm bubble ring fed by spotty carbonation, and a thin, partial cap.
Lacing – Poor – scant tracings.
Aroma – 4 – Coffee. No hops, no yeast, no ethanol (11 % ABV, according to BA, NOT marked on label). No disulfide or diacetyl.
Flavor – 4 – Coffee and a hint of chocolate. Roasted malt background. No yeast, no hops, no ethanol. No disulfides, no diacetyl. Moderate gastric warming.
Palate – 4 – Medium; creamy to slightly syrupy; soft carbonation.
Style: Follows the style guidelines as condensed by BA.
Final impression and summation: 4 Ho-hum. Another coffee stout. At least the ethanol is well hidden. Distinctly overpriced.

Brasserie le Detour (France) ‘Fortitude’ BA Baltic Porter

Cross post with the Baltic Porter event because the beer is Worthy.

I went to my local pub last evening for a tap take over by south France brewery ‘Brasserie le Detour’ - 8 handles - including a Baltic Porter, ‘Fortitude’.
Fortitude is a traditional European Baltic Porter, blended with a strong ale aged in Laphroaig single malt whiskey barrels.

The brew delivered impressively fresh, with an excellent brown foam crowning deep brown brew.
Rich nose of smoky molasses, dark chocolate, heavy malt and an herbal note that defies description.
Taste brought a curveball to my expectations. Laphroaig Scotch whiskey uses a distinctive peat which gives a unique smoky character that integrated itself complementarily into the beer. The initial flavor, cold from the tap, was familiar Baltic Porter and ‘something else’. But as the brew warmed, wonderful additional layers of vanilla, oak, and spirits compounded the flavor profile. The 95 IBUs delivered fine bitterness and mighty 9.5% ABV brought intensity to the finish with mouthwatering ethanol present. Residual notes of molasses and dark chocolate made for a unique and satisfying experience.
Mouthfeel is velvety, with medium carbonation.
Overall, art of the craft on display in elevating an already fine brew into a creative delight that was worth breaking my Dry January streak. Getting this on draught was ding ding bonus points.

    4.28/5 in the BA DB

    Appearance: Clear amber, good head.

Smell: Some fruitiness, a bit of metallic note which I sometimes get from ambers.

Taste: Mild sweetness, then the fruitiness comes through. Nice mix of bready, caramel, and mild red fruits. Creamy mouthfeel.

Overall: Picked up a single since I'm not typically an amber lager guy. The smell reminded me why I don't like ambers, but the taste was very good! Very nice winter warmer-like bready/fruity flavor with a unique creamy mouthfeel. Maybe I will pick some more of this one up!

Another from Burdock Brewing. I will have to give this brewery some more love. I probably overlooked them because they don't do many of my favourite styles but what they do, they do well.

Poured a 473ml can into a pint glass. A two finger bubbly white head on a slightly hazy gold. Good head retention. Some patchy lacing.

Spicy malts in the nose. the taste is clean and smooth. Bready grains. Slightly sweet with a very mild hop finish.

The mouthfeel is clean and crisp. Medium light body with good carbonation. Overall a fine Helles. True to the style and well worth a try.

Today's new beer is Reasonably Corrupt, a schwarzbier from Great Raft Brewing in Shreveport.
The beer is a dark brown/black color with a cap of a tan head.
Aroma is roasted malt, bread, and chocolate.
Taste is chocolate, bread. Some floral hops in rthe finish.
    Medium-bodied, very drinkable.

Toppling Goliath Brewing Cyber Sue. The look is golden, clear, and honey-colored, with a light white foam top. The smell is tropical and bready, with scents of mango, grapefruit, and buttered toast. The taste is more bitter than I expected. There is a bit of grapefruit and tangerine flavor, but it tastes mostly like toast with a bit of honey. The mouthfeel is light, crisp, and sparkly, with medium carbonation. Overall, this is very old Toppling Goliath Brewing Pseudo Sue, with an outstanding can.
