Good morning, Weekenders! I'm getting off to an early start today - although I've been up for hours and quite productive, so I think I've earned it.

My first new-to-me brew comes courtesy of ... me! Well, I mean, Tree House brewed it, but I picked it up. :stuck_out_tongue:

Hold On To Sunshine - Barrel Blend is an imperial sweet stout (7.9%, so on the very edge) brewed with coffee, cacao, peanuts, and lactose, blended with a thread of the same beer aged in a variety of barrels.

On the nose, the peanuts are overpowering. It's a very pleasant aroma, just not one that gives you much of an impression of what's to come, unless it's peanuts all the way down.

Thankfully, it's much more balanced on the palate. The coffee and chocolate still don't stand out much, but they definitely contribute to the overall profile (the chocolate is more prominent on the finish and aftertaste, however). Mouthfeel is superb, incredibly smooth, full-bodied, and creamy.

Apologies for the 2023 can; I did buy it fresh, it was on the shelves like that. "Ink" imperial stout was the same way. Just looked again yesterday while in the bottle shop and that's what they have on the shelves. Very strange. I obviously need to check dates on everything and not just IPAs.

We enjoyed our 20th anniversary last weekend. I noted we are now entering the third decade of New Beer Sundays.

Hopefully we and Beer Advocate will be around in ten years to enjoy the 30th anniversary.

Late breakfast with a Heineken zero
    ....super clear gold/orange appearance
...medium carbonation with a body that was perhaps thin but surprisingly had more heft than I expected
....aroma bread, cereal, slightly toasted grain and malt
....taste didn't stray too far from the aroma. My first impression was it reminded me of how beer tasted a very long time ago.
...overall I dont want to oversell this but it was surprisingly enjoyable [IMG]

Good afte....err, wait, it's still morning? Hell yeah! :grinning:

This new beer I get all to myself, as it's not exactly in my partner's wheelhouse (for a couple of reasons, actually). I admit it's a bit intimidating, too:

    Barleywine
12.04% ABV (gotta love the precision)
Aged over a year in brandy barrels
Bottle itself three years + a day old

Yeah, this could be a big, badass beer experience. There's only one way to find out!

    Olde Hickory Appalachian Walker

Listed as an EBW, it both smells and drinks more like an ABW. This could be Bigfoot's bigger cousin - which, well, given the name, actually makes a lot of sense. This here's Bigfeets! echoes in my head.

One of the really impressive aspects of barleywines (especially those that lean American) is that they can be incredibly malty without being particularly sweet. They taste the way wort smells. I call them wort soup.

This one is ... well, yeah, it's pretty much that.

Aroma is all barleywine: big, bold, earthy, leathery, bark...y. Red grapes, oak, and a heavy dose of hops, tempered by age.

Tasting notes back up the nose. There's a bit of boozy bite from the brandy barrels, which impart a decent if not tremendous amount of whiskey-like flavor. Most of this experience, however, is very ABW-like, tempered by age. Bark, leather, herbs, wort soup, brown sugar, port wine.

This is really darn good. One sip in, and my partner confirmed: not her thing. Not entirely my thing, either, as I prefer my barleywines a bit sweeter and richer (less bitter and earthy), but I think it's really, really good, regardless.

L: SRM 6 pours 95% clear amber with a 1/4" domed off white head that has good retention receding to thick froth, lush steady carbo, medium lacing with some banding lines.
S: Pineapple, citrus zest, resin, a hint of cookie dough, caramelized malts with warming.
T: Citrus zest, pine resin, distant hard candy sweetness that is won over by bitterness, has a lingering bitter finish, caramelized malts.
F: Smooth medium bodied feel with a medium-long gently drying finish.
O: A lovely and mellow no frills IPA with an English feel. Well balanced and well blended. Mellow at first then has a nice slow build to a bitter finish. It is very good in its style.

    Appearance: Clear yellow, good head.

Smell: A little stinky sock, then lemony seltzer with a hint of berries.

Taste: Mild sweetness then some dry breadiness and a mix of citrus and berries. Nice Mosaic hop taste. Light bodied, but expected with a “session IPA”.

Overall: I like mosaic hopped beers but not usually a fan of session IPA's, but decided to try this one. Pretty decent/good, good mosaic flavor, just too light bodied for my preferences. Worth a try.

    Weihenstephaner Korbinian, enjoyed yesterday evening.

Pours a very deep amber, almost black, with a modest head. Aroma blends dense dark bread and molasses with cherries, raisins, plums, and figs. On tasting, cinnamon, caramel, licorice, maple, and a little vanilla come through. However, it's not overly sweet despite all of these sweet-leaning flavors. A slightly earthy, roast coffee flavor, along with herbal notes, rises from underneath to balance the sweetness, leaving a mildly astringent finish, and a little syrup. I'm impressed with how the fruit blend, roasted grains, and slight herbal hoppiness seem to evolve - I pick up different fruit, roast, and herb notes with each sip. Pleasantly warm - not too hot. Overall medium bodied.

I'm really impressed with this one. An outstanding dopplebock, on par with Celebrator.

    Good afternoon (finally!), Weekenders!

My third new brew of the day is Half Truth, a "scaled down version of Truth" blended with a thread of barrel aged stout. As best I can tell, the base beer is an imperial stout based on the Truth recipe, but lower ABV, and the BA stout may actually be Truth, but it's not perfectly clear.

Tree House does a lot of barrel blended beers like this, where they take a fresh, non-BA beer and then blend it with a portion of BA beer (either the same recipe or something else). My first beer today was one such beer.

In my experience, the result tends to be the worst of both worlds: not enough bourbon or whiskey to really notice it (in other words: it doesn't taste like a barrel aged beer), but just enough to mess with the flavor profile (there's something there, but it's primarily adding just heat, neutral/effervescent alcohol, and a touch of sourness).

This is the case with Half Truth, as well.

Now, worst of both worlds sounds like it's a bad beer, and that's not at all true. Rather, what I mean is that the base beer without adding in a BA beer thread would probably be better than this, as would have simply aging the entire beer for a year or more. It's kind of like this: I like ranch, and I like blue cheese, and I'm sure that mixing them together would probably still taste good, but I doubt it would taste as good as either taste on their own.

The most impressive part of this beer is, by a mile, the mouthfeel. Tree House is legendary for their full bodied and smooth IPAs, but their stouts are, IMO, just as fluffy, thick, and smooth.

Tasting notes of char, cocoa, espresso, vanilla, red grape, sour cherry, and oak. It's growing on me a bit over time, but not enough to change my opinion.

Good Sunday afternoon, New Beer Sippers and commentators. My first review of this cold, blustery afternoon is one of the Silk City variants I purchased at the annual release at Brix City Brewing Co., yesterday, AOMAS. It is a BBA Imperial Stout conditioned on toasted coconut, cocoa nibs, and salted caramel. I wanted to drink it right away because I was concerned the adjuncts wouldn't age well. But the taste surprised me: it is not a sweet Stout. Rather, what really comes through is a bitter char and the salted caramel. I like it a lot more than I thought I would.

It is nearly black with some mahogany hues at the bottom of the glass and it sports a half finger cap of light-mocha-colored foam that dissipated rapidly. A big nose with chocolate, graham cracker, coconut, caramel, and subtle but noticeable bourbon. The taste is less sweet than I anticipated. In fact, what jumps out initially is bitter char and salted caramel. The cocoa nibs are somewhat overwhelmed at first but develop nicely as the Stout breathes in the glass. The barrel notes are strong but not distracting. It finishes with some peppercorn and lots of bitterness. While the Silk City variants tend not to be thick and viscous, I like the mouth feel of this one. The 10.5% ABV gives it heft but doesn't overpower.

Brix City Brewing is somewhat similar to Free Will Brewing in Pennsylvania. Both produce solid hazy IPAs but are better known for their annual release of a series of barrel-aged Stouts. The Silk City Stouts are not at the same level as Free Will's Ralphius series but they are still quite good and probably the best annually-released BA Stouts in New Jersey by a brewery other than Kane. The "regular" BA Silk City and the vanilla bean version are released every year and there are 3 or 4 other variants. The other two for 2025 are a rum version and a white chocolate mocha.

    Cheers!

NBS #2. Moon Healer, a DIPA from our home town brewery, Autodidact, hopped with Citra, Nectaron, and Peacherine. The latter, along with Krush, seem to be the "hot" hops at the moment. This was canned 3 days ago and it's a little green with some hop burn but I can tell that in a week it will be really good.

It pours a hazy tangerine color with more than a finger of fluffy, bright white head and very thick lacing. A big, vibrant now featuring lemon, pineapple, tangerine, soft floral hops, and a smell akin to pickle brine (I kid you not but it's a good thing). Yum! I opens with tart citrus, including lemon, lime, and grapefruit, along with subtle peach and pineapple. There is also an earthy, spicy overlay. I don't think I've had the hop combo of Nectaron and Peacherine before but it's magical. The Citra adds a sharp, clean bitterness throughout. The mouth feel is luxuriously creamy with pleasant carbonation, and the 8.5% ABV gives it lots of heft.

Thanks to @WunderLlama for this one!

The beer pours black with no visible highlights when held up to light, and 3 fingers of off dark tan head that recedes slowly settling down to a thick cap. A small amount of lacing remains on the glass.

The aroma is all peanut butter and chocolate. Such an inviting aroma, sweet milk chocolate and peanut butter, and just a hint of coffee.

The flavor matches the nose quite closely, but bigger! lots of sweet milk chocolate and peanut butter, like a Reece's Peanut butter cup. Full bodied and silky, low/moderate carbonation and finishes slick on the tongue.

Overall this is a very nice milk stout. Phenomenal aroma with a flavor to match. If this was available locally I would keep it on regular rotation!

    500 ml bottle.
    Brewed Aug. 2021.
    Bottled May 2022.

Moderate pour yields a nearly one inch white head over a golden straw colored, slightly hazy body. Head dissipates down to a ring in minutes.

Nose of musty funk, citrus, and slight oak.

Taste mirrors nose with a bit of honey upfront, giving way to citrus midway through the finish. Funk and oak are evident throughout. As it warms the honey becomes present until the finish of slight dry citrus pith.

Wonderful medium to full mouthfeel with medium carbonation.

Overall, yet another winner from Albany, VT. Good luck finding it as I found one in my fridge's crisper drawer last week!
