Greetings All from the Great Northwest where we are seasonable but still in severe drought. A little rain overnight but not near enough.

Today we have Lil' Squeezy Juicy Pale Ale.
    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/63/420366/

A very drinkable pale ale. I think it's a lighter version of the Fresh Squeeze IPA.

    Until next time

Apparently no longer retired, but personally, I think it should be.
    Bottled 4/13/21, drank today.
Poured a hazy straw yellow with floaties. Sparse head and virtually no lacing.
The aroma was faint but I could smell banana, I think.
The taste was curious, just quite unexpected as I couldn’t taste banana, coconut or vanilla. What I did taste was beets. Now I enjoy a good borscht but beets and beer don’t mix well.
The feel was okay, I think the floaties affected this aspect.
OA- I am glad to have been able to try this and just as happy I only got one.
    Cheers!

You write well. Maybe a history or story about your family business could provide you a creative option and open some doors. I'm certain that as things hopefully return to "normal" a memoir about this time as it relates to your family could be a solid entry into the new genre of Covid life? There are and will be many more personal tales about these times. It is like science fiction coming to life and visiting us. Anyway, I hope your family is well all the way around and that good fortune will find its way to your life. Cheers....

Good Evening Gents! Second post in NBW. First was of a beer that had just been disc.

Tonight I have enjoyed Grimm Brothers- 3 Golden Hairs. I have been exploring German Pilsners and Helles recently and this is a Pilsner that is Czech in style and one that is on the subtle hops and fuller malt side than some. Really likeable and I suppose crushable.

I scored it 4.04 overall which is on the higher side of the bell curve for me.

    Grimm – 3 Golden Hairs

L- 95% transparent straw color with a nice white 2F head

N- Spicy hop notes and a yeasty sweet bread aroma.

T- Creamy yeasty malt that is not sweet but really tastes of freshly baked white sweet bread dough. Has a bit of lemony spice of some sort that hits the tip and sides of the tongue. Hops are a light version of the typical German spicy variants and do a great job in keeping this subtle and flavor nuanced. This beer has enough going on that you want to take another sip quickly.

M- Creamy medium bodied beer with very fine bubbles in good quantity. Finish is lightly dry with a bit of cloying malt at the back of the tongue and throat.

O- I was not expecting this beer to be as malty or as subtly hopped. This is another Pilsner that steps back a notch from the Germans and below the sweetness of a Helles. I like it and will seek out a 6er for further studies.

De Struise - Black Damnation IX: Beggar's Art

"Belgian Royal" Stout aged in Ardbeg barrels for two years, from Belgium (18.1%).

Pours a pitch-black coloration with a reddish sheen when held up to the light and a small, creamy head. Smells of slightly roasted, caramel malt, chocolate and lighter dark fruit and spice, with notes of raisin and licorice.

Taste is a great balance of slightly roasted, caramel malt, distinct milk chocolate and lighter dark fruit and spice, with notes of raisin, fig, clove and licorice, as well as just a hint of charred oak and peat. Finishes bittersweet, with a medium bitterness and some roasted malt, chocolate, dark fruit and spice lingering in the aftertaste. Full mouthfeel with a rich body and light/medium carbonation.

I did enjoy this a lot more over Black Mess, with this just feeling a lot more smoked and peaty, while those charred oak notes are also a lot more prominent here, which is interesting because I also enjoy Ardbeg over Caol Ila a lot. At the same time, the huge difference in ABV is hardly noticeable in the taste, which really is a tremedous achievement in my opinion, although you certainly start to feel it before long.

The barrel-ageing really does add quite a rich depth of character to an already quite complex beer here, with the balance of roasted, smokey, sweet and ever so slightly bitter and herbal notes being rather outstanding. Overall, this makes for a very rich and well-balanced barrel-aged Imperial Stout that will, fuck you up before you even notice it.

Currently listening to: Leonard Cohen - So Long, Marianne.

Prairie Cherry Bomb!, 13% ABV; 3.98 Overall

Pours a chestnut-hued mahogany with a thumb+ of mocha colored head. No head retention or lacing

    S: Chocolate, coffee

T: Follows the nose along with dryness, along with a little sweet & tart cherry, plus a little chille heat up front. A little dryness & coffee goes with a general Cherry Cordial flavor as this warms, a little pepper heat on the edges, along with a touch of smokeyness. Finishes a little dry with chocolate, cherry & a touch of chille

MF: Fairly chewy with low carbonation

A nice iteration of the series, well put together & drinkable

Evening all! its been a non-stop chore-filled Saturday over here. I am finally finished and sitting down to share a couple of beers with all of you. Ill be catching up on the thread here momentarily, but in the meantime I am drinking a really odd beer that I had to try - Goose Island Malört Barrel aged 312 ale.

So, this beer is some kind of amped up 312 - their "urban wheat ale" that spent some time in a malört barrel. Malört is a Chicago icon - a bitter liquer (a la amaro) made with wormwood. In Chicago you can order something called a Chicago Handshake which is a can of Old Style and a shot of malört. So in an odd way this is a kind of a Chicago handshake all in one.

Pours a crystal clear burnished copper color. Thick three-finger frothy off-white head forms on the beer upon pouring, then steadily collapses leaving no residual head. Aroma has notes of oak, pine, and some bitter spice notes - the malört coming through on the nose. There is a touch of sweetness on the nose reminiscent of a light vanilla note. Interesting aroma overall ... I'm kind of apprehensive as to what this is going to taste like.

The taste has notes of orange, pine, grapefruit, wood, oak, wormwood, giving way to a malört blast on the back end that is herbally bitter with some bitter hop notes. Its weird, unique and as someone who likes malört ... its actually pretty nice. The underlying beer is "light" enough that it allows the malört to really shine through. Feel is light, smooth with rounded edges from that aging. Light, smooth carbonation.

Overall this is one of those beers that I suspect most people would end up hating, but I dig it. Its weird, but sometimes weird is good and fun.

@SawDog505 thanks for the opening this weekend! That is an incredibly difficult situation to work through. Hoping for the best and that you are able to find some direction in your search. And hey congrats on the undefeated season!

@jonphisher thats way down in the Pine Barrens!

@MNAle nice write up!Really enjoyed reading it and appreciate the good showing from Hamms.

This next beer is one that I have been meaning to crack, but just hadn't had the chance to open and review yet. This is another Goose Island beer - their Suffolk County Stout. Supposedly this is BCBS but brewed with all English malts and hops and then aged in Adnams Southwold single malt whisky barrels.

Pours pitch black, shiny, thick, and completely opaque. Thin, weak tan head forms on the beer momentarily before dissipating leaving no residual head. Aroma has notes of fudge brownies, fruit cake, musty wet wood, whisky, cream, with a light boozy note on the nose.

The taste has notes of dark fruit, fruit cake, fudge, musty wet wood, whisky, vanilla, cinnamon, and oak. Its a tad bit hot, boozy - this really warms you up as you drink it. But its not an unpleasant heat - I am quite enjoying it within this profile. The interesting thing about this is the whisky - I can't quite describe it, but its got a roughness or harshness to it that comes through in the beer - giving that booziness a bit of an edge. I suspect that while I like this beer, the whisky wouldn't my favorite.

Feel is medium bodied, somewhat thin, even compared to regular bourbon county stout. Spritzy carbonation. Very dry on the finish.

Overall this is not as good as old school BCBS, but its a delicious barrel aged stout that I thoroughly enjoyed. Well worth drinking.

Did you ever find this one @zid?

A few responses to posts from yesterday:
    • Just wanted to thank @Shanex for his moderation and his great posts here and WBAYDN, and just being a nice and good person and welcoming to all you encounter!
    • @champ103 not only pulls out great music on a daily (hourly) basis, but also really appreciate his sharing of books. I scarfed down Madison Smartt Bell's Waiting for the End of the World in just over a day, and I'm not a big fiction reader. Love his beer reviews as well.
    • A few folks mentioned the NBW/NBS discussion thread. I've seen @Todd pop into WBAYDN a few times, but possibly haven't been on this thread long enough to catch him join in here. Perhaps he'll stop by and share a beer with us here soon.
    • @FBarber - I hope your second go at Goldfinger Pils is better. You had some weird coloring and aroma when I checked out your review. I did like my beer, rated it above average (3.5), but I don't think folks looking for a traditional balanced Pils will like it.
More beers added to my "to find list than a typical Saturday, including:
    • Immigrant by Hammerhead as reviewed by @Roy_Hobbs , by way of @Victory_Sabre1973 with @GreenBayBA 's testifying as to the greatness of this brewery.
    • @Snowcrash000 's S. H. I. T. beer. Really glad brewers are returning to Black IPAs and that they executing the stout blend very well.
    • Despite @TongoRad 's review, I want to track down the Dovetail Rauchweizen, primarily because of my love of their Grodziskie smoked beer.
    • Hope to find a Malort 312 next March, looking forward to trying the Suffolk County I have soon.

Will return with a review of my first beer I plan on opening soon, but not before leaving with a song that popped in my head, and on my you tube inspired by @Snowcrash000 's selection: Special by Garbage (which nicely closes with an ode to The Pretenders, one of my all time favorites). I haven't thought of Garbage in forever, glad I did today!

It is @FBarber funny thing is know a lot of the towns close by but never had heard of Estelle manor itself.

Next time we’re gonna try and hit Estelle manor park. Old crumbing brick glassworks building, lots of trails and playgrounds.

I still haven’t tried a Hamms @MNAle I need to find some. Places I tend to frequent don’t have it but I think it is definitely around NJ.

Welcome to New Beer Sunday #851! I've been keeping the count since the transition, but the NBS discussion thread and linked first NBW post made me realize the final NBS wasn't a stand alone thread, that NBW #1 was also NBS #805, so I've been off one this whole time. Therefore, this beer is for the NBS that never was recognized, NBS 850.

850 AD was the year coffee was discovered, so I had this beer to celebrate from a new to me brewery until recently. I really loved their Pilsner, Technical Ecstasy, one of my Top 10 new to me beers this year.

    2nd Shift Liquid Spiritual Delight

    Can Notes:
12 ounces canned 2/16/21, poured into a snifter glass. Brewed and Canned by Crider Brewing LLC. in Saint Louis, MO. (Apparently their legal name, with 2nd Shift Brewing their DBA name). 11.5% ABV. Imperial Stout with Blueprint Coffee and Vanilla. Liquid Spiritual Delight is our chewy, chocolatey imperial stout that we've artfully paired with Tahitian vanilla beans and blended with Blueprint Coffee Penrose.

Appearance: Very dark brown, rich tan head dissipates quickly leaving no trace. 3.75

    Aroma:
Strong, heavy on the natural smelling vanilla, the coffee comes through next. Smells good, but don't necessarily like the way it blends here. Let this warm for several more minutes and liked it better. A nice roast malt follows, chocolate and fudge. Still too much vanilla for my tastes, but overall pretty good. (about a 3.0 until it warmed) 4.0

    Taste:
Coffee leads well, dark roast bitter, pleasant. Nice sweet milk chocolate, chocolaty fudge and roast malt follows. Vanilla in a good spot here, complementing it all. Letting this warm enough brought out a very nice complexity. Roast malt base comes through as well, sounds very sweet, but this is not cloying and is a nice well executed blend. Definitely on point. 4.25

Mouthfeel: Full body, stickiest of stickies, very thick and creamy, decedent. No carbonation, sweet overall, drinks too easy for an 11.5% imperial stout, easy clean finish, super enjoyable. 4.75

    Overall:
This is an excellent coffee vanilla imperial stout. Smelled one dimensional until it was at proper temperature and then the complexity really burst. Very enjoyable from first to last sip, don't typically seek stouts beyond barrel or coffee, but picked this up based on my great experience with their Pilsner and am very glad I did. Need to visit this brewery and a few others in Saint Louis later this year. Another great 2nd Shift beer! 4.5

The accompanying review music is inspired by the beer name. See you back later with a light an easy beer to pair with lunch/dinner. Cheers!

Good day BAs! Welcome to another edition of NBW, sub-section NBS. Today's New Breakfast Beer isn't New in the sense that I've never had it before - I sucked down a LOT of these in plastic glasses on my recent trip to TX - but it is new in the sense that I added it to the BA data base, uploaded the photo, and logged the first review.

BBFB (Bourbon Barrel Fracking Blackstrap Imperial Stout (2021 version)) from 5 Stones. At reefer temperature shelf at Five Stones Artisan Brewery, New Braunfels, TX. About $ 10 /16.9 oz bottle (about $ 0.592/oz). Stored at home at 42 degrees. Reviewed 13/6/21. Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Undated bottle other than “2021” on front label. Served at 52.3 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 59.1 degrees.
    Appearance – 3.
First pour – Ruby Brown (SRM 24), clear.
Body – Black (SRM 40), opaque. When rear-lite, translucent ruby around the edge.
Head – Tiny (Maximum seven mm, aggressive center pour), fawn, low density froth before settling into a high density three mm crown, and a thin partial cap, both of which last.
    Lacing – None.
Aroma – 4 – Weak molasses and weak roasted malt, no hops, no yeast, no bourbon, no barrel.
Flavor – 4.5 – Begins mildly sweet with a generic dark fruitiness, a hint of molasses, exceptionally smooth and non-threatening bourbon, no hops, no yeast, and no ethanol (? % ABV, NOT marked on container) taste or aroma. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. Neither vanillin nor tannin from the barrels is detected.
Palate – 4 – Medium, almost creamy, soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4.5 The whole is greater than the sum (or average) of the parts. On my last trip to TX, we spent several afternoons at 5 Stones, eating and consuming (me, anyway) multiple plastic glasses of BBFB. This brew was sooooo good I should have bought a case! Unlike many BBA stouts, the bourbon smoothly fit in, while not being dominant or aggressive – there was/is no ethanol burn. I did ask and was told what bourbon barrels were used; unfortunately, I’ve since forgotten but I do remember being suitably impressed.
Rating 4.2, rDev 0% (First Review)
