Thanks for the heads-up. I had not heard of that. When does it come out usually? Spring I'd assume?

Unfortunately, I think it was a Winter limited release, but you may find it lingering, as I did.

I'm all in on 1840 Brewing's lagers as the best local Milwaukee option. Every one I've had has been great. Most of what they make is haze IPAs, Fruity lactose sours, etc but I've learned not to sleep on any lager they make. Right now they have a wheat lager I wasn't expecting to care for and damned if I didn't love it enough to pound both 500mL bottles I bought back to back. The only Milwaukee option that stands up to the likes of Goldfinger and Dovetail IMO.

Unfortunately I'd have to say I'm with people saying New Glarus has fallen off a bit. Can't remember the last time any lager from them stood out to me.

Drinking a Riverwest Stein right now. It's not at all comparable to many German styles, but it's an Amber Lager that can't be beat. Sorry to say, but I think I like it better than Two Women these days... maybe a good plan for a side-by.

FWIW -- I've penned a side-by comparison of the RW Stein and the RW Stein NA. Lakefront is on to something with their NA. I'll probably post in the comparison thread soon.

Firestone Walker *should* look up to NG for tips on brewing lagers. Just sayin'.

But I'll reiterate my original opinion that I'm talking strictly to-style German beers. NG definitely brews great beers, but their German styles often fall a little short.

Also, I guess Suarez or FW hasn't tried some of the beers in my list above.

Bit of an addendum -- I actually liked Oaktoberfest better than Staghorn to-style a few years ago, but I haven't tried their new iteration. Have they crazy-hopped it like they do Pivo?

It's hard to be mind-blown by a lager these days. Lager production has really taken off around the country in the past couple of years and these beers keep getting better and better every year. Chicago has Dovetail, Goldfinger, Art History and a bunch of other breweries focusing mostly on lagers now and they're all outstanding at it.

I don't think anything has changed about NG, it's just the craft beer scene around us that's changing.

I agree with this, which is why it's exciting to try something like Roaring Table's Festbier, or Dovetail's Helles on tap, and be floored. They really took me back to Munich, and that's my benchmark for good German styles.

Lakefront’s EastSide Dark is terribly underrated.

Oaktoberfest was closer to a festbier and I was happy to have bought a 6pk.

Would you not consider Pivo Pils one of the more exemplary takes on Italian Pils? I mean, Tipopils, but FW was first to pay homage to Tipopils and it’s still one of the best examples of saphir hops ever found

When I first tried, and then reviewed, Pivo it was still called a German Pils -- so that's how I rated it.

I fully admit to not being a fan of Saphir hops in traditional styles -- the use sort of contradicts "traditional" to me.

That said, I'll always recognize a well-brewed beer and give it points for that -- just as I do with NG. No denying their brewing skills.

Eastside dark, along with central waters Octoberfest, have been my autumn go-tos the last few years, so so good.

i think it fell into German category because all the ingredients come from Germany. When Pivo debuted, FW called it a German style lager. The term Italian Pils didn’t exist yet. Brynildson said Pivo was inspired by a pilsner made in Italy. Birrificio Italiano Tipopils. To my knowledge, it was the first commercially dry hopped pilsner to hit the American market.

Which, in and of itself, was always a head-scratcher to me since Pivo is the *Czech* word for beer.:wink:

*Oh yeah, and I believe the old label even stated "German Lager." Might still be the pic BA uses.

**Well hell, it says Pilsner all over that label.

But I don't dispute your info on FW's intentions, but Pivo was categorized as a German Pils, so I reviewed it that way... albeit unfavorably.

It's funny thinking on this because I recalled Bell's Lager of the Lakes -- a great German-style Pils to my palate... yet categorized as a Czech Pils. All very convoluted.

As is often stated, follow your palate!

With Scream's release in early March, I'd like to try some when I'm in WI in a few days. The local store commonly has older items on the shelf (at least it's chilled). It was mentioned earlier in this thread that Scream doesn't have a bottle date marked. Is that true? I thought NG did the last number of the year Julian date thing.

New Glarus has pull codes. I forget how they’re exactly laid out but I explained it in the 2021 (2020?) thread.
