Why dont they stop production of Hell for a month. No one is going to miss it come september. We cant go out with a less than stellar Wet from last year then nothing this year. Give me the Super Awesome Hop Glory that was Wet 11' and 12'. Disappointing to hear this. :slight_frown:

    Wet>>>>>Hell.

    *shakes fist at nothing*

Hell has incredible margins. Wet most likely does not.

Damn you Steazy and your economic principles! I imagine Surly isnt exactly hurting for cash though...

They can probably turn Wet around in about 10 days. Hell, shit that stuff probably lagers for a month taking up valuable cellar space. They could probably brew 3 to 4 batches of Wet in the time it takes to put out one batch of Hell. Yes, I understand that wet hops are only available for a limited time, I was just using it as an example. I'd even be willing to bet that wet hops aren't all that much more than the hops they buy for Furious or Overrated, but whatever cost increase they see in Wet is probably well offset by it's $17.00 a four pack price tag.

Boo. Fortunately, there is a growing selection of decent wet hopped beer in the fall. I will miss the annual surprise recipe from Surly this year, however.

Wet hops are more expensive, but the biggest cost is the transportation from the PNW to Brooklyn Center. They are shipped in refrigerated trucks to keep them as fresh as possible. Also you have to put your orders in for the Hops, if not at the beginning of the growing season, long before the end of the growing season.

Sure, but are they that much more expensive? Also, last years hops came from Michigan. Wet is a more or less basic IPA. Even with more expensive ingredients, the turn around on it is much better than a beer like Hell, a helles lager that takes up valuable cellar space, which in the end probably costs more money than fancy hops. I don't think this has anything to do with margins or whatever. Surly simply can't fit Wet into their production schedule this year. Plain and simple.

During a Migration event a week or so ago, I was listening in on a conversation one of the Surly employees was having with a few other BA's. The conversation started with the employee confirming that Darkness was going to be barrel aged this year. He explained that their current capacity couldn't keep up with the demand for Furious and Hell. To make room, they filled barrels with Darkness and started to crank out more Furious and Hell. He then said, "that is also why we are not brewing Wet this year." Based on this discussion, production schedule is exactly the issue.

Ill just say it...Who the hell drinks hell? Its a 'decent but nothing special' helles lager. Why not buy a german 12 pack for about the same price? The germans have been making this style of beer for 600 years...I think they would know best how to make it

And of course from now on we will expect Dorkness to be barreled blended from this day forward. I'm cool with that.

The Helles style was first brewed by Spaten Brewery in 1894 so its not nearly as old as you'd think, but I see your point. Why buy a bastardized American version of the style when you can get a larger quantity of an authentic version for less money? People do drink Hell though. It's Surly's second best selling beer.

People who are aware enough to know craft beer is kind of cool and want to give the impression they are craft beer drinkers. It allows them to live this fantasy but not suffer through beer with things like character or flavor.

Truth is I love & appreciate these individuals as I suspect their monetary contributions probably subsidize breweries brewing the beers I actually want to drink.
