I had this beer once and that was on draft. The draft glass I drank was not too hazy from my perpective. My guess is that the Stone yeast strain does not foster long term murkiness like Wyeast 1318.

    Cheers!

Another contribution from the microscopes, this time comparing Tree House Alter Ego and a hazy hoppy beer from Fieldwork. Alter Ego had more than 50x the amount of yeast in it than the Fieldwork beer.

Jamil was a judge in a small brewing competition I was in during college several years ago, and even though nearly every non-judge taster agreed my team's IPA was the best, we got 3rd. I asked Jamil why and he said the haze. This was before it was cool. Sounds like he'd still give us 3rd. Yes, I'm still salty.

Well it's certainly a craze, it has made some good brews in some cases, but like I always say:

You only get one chance to make a good first impression.

Yup, the Milkshake beers. Their other beers of HopHands, ALien Church, etc. are also hazy with no flour additions to those beers; unless you know otherwise.

    Cheers!

Because I don't like the flavour of yeast and it masks all the other flavours in a beer.

I'm amazed anyone thinks beers like this are anything better than carellessly brewed at best. Watneys Red tasted and looked the same every time and how the brewer intended. Didn't stop it being total crap.

The best US IPAs I've had - Pliny the Elder, Sculpin and Deschures Fresh Squeezed were all crystal clear. Is that now a fault?

    More acceptable than
If your beer is very murky and cloudy, I'd say yes.

Hefeweizen isn't necessarily hazy. If you pour it carefullly - as I do because I hate the taste of fucking yeast - it's easy to get a crystal clear Hefeweizen. I've always thought people who poured it out carefully then threw the yeast in at the end were total idiots.

Surely adding two extra months to the year to extend the beer's shelf-life is cheating?

Beer being clear isn't a fault, but maybe what we should take from all this is that being unfiltered/hazy/cloudy isn't necessarily a fault either.

Well that's why they make kristallweizen (though not as readily available as a hefeweizen or dunkelweizen). People who enjoy the spicy yeast of these beers aren't idiots simply because their palate treats these flavors as enjoyable. I would never think someone was dumb for leaving out the sediment of a hefeweizen simply because they didn't like it. That just makes someone sound like as asshat.

Have you ever gotten the opportunity to try anything from tree house, trillium, or tired hands?

Idiots, or, alternately, folks like me who enjoy that taste of the yeast in a hefe?

Even worse I am an idiot who really enjoys some of the murky beers I have tried. Even worse than that I am an idiot who likes them and I am drinking one now.

Funny to think traditionalists likely once complained back in the day when light lagers came out that they were too clear. At least my ironic sensibilities wonder if that is true?

I'm not an idiot and have papers to prove it. I do like yeast in Hefes, Belgians and other styles where it's present and will cheerfully continue to drink them as long as they're made, or as long as I'm able, whichever comes first.

Fair enough if you like the flavour of yeast. I don't.

Funnily enough, I can remember something similar in the early days of CAMRA. Some saying cloudy beer was fine. I bought into that for a while. Until my tastebuds told me otherwise. It was a half of Davenport's Mild on Hurst Street in Birmingham that changed my mind.

No, Kristallweizen tastes very different because it isn't bottle-conditioned. A Hefeweizen poured carefully off the lees is totally different to a Kristallweizen.

Pour a beer nice and clear, then tip all the yeast in. Weird.

There's hazy, unfiltered and full of sludge. I've no problem with the first two.

With all the hatred for non crystal clear beers, it's amazing any stouts get drunk around here.
