I've been seeing this problem for years. I can't figure out why I'm sometimes not getting tag/mention alerts. I just failed to get alerts for these two posts. link. link.

This isn't due to more than 5 other tags in a post, nor my account preferences - as far as I can tell. I'm always reluctant to tag members in posts for this reason. Any help would be appreciated.

You have everything set right in your alert preferences I presume.

Yes. As far as I can tell. I do get alerts from tags sometimes, just not always. I did not get an alert for your mention above. Thanks Bill.

Thanks, but my "receive an alert" preferences are all checked, and I log in on a daily basis. I just want an alert every time someone posts @zid and when they don't tag anybody else. Surely, not alerting someone when the poster is trying to alert someone isn't by design. :worried:

One cause could be not reading the entire thread. You'll get one alert, but no subsequent alerts unless you read all new posts. In the navigation under Forums you could try "Mark Forums Read" to reset things.

Thanks. I just marked everything as read. That was scary. I must spend too much time here. Gonna tag myself just to see what happens. @zid

Tagging yourself isn't designed to work, but it looks like the system decided to not bug you with alerts as it assumed that you were no longer interested in the threads. (As designed and in the FAQ.)

I'm not trying to bug you and I appreciate your time, but I can't wrap my head around this and either I'm the only person this is happening to (in which case something isn't working properly) or this is happening to others (in which case people aren't getting alerts they'd expect to get). I didn't get an alert for the second post in this thread. Since I was the first post (the OP), it clearly shouldn't have been determined that I was no longer interested in this thread... and if I would have had to have read every post in this thread before getting an alert, then I would be getting an alert after having read the post that alerted me (which didn't happen and wouldn't make any sense from a design perspective). The FAQ really is not helping me at all here and it hasn't since I first brought this up years (?) ago and was directed to it. Maybe the answer is there, but I don't see it and it's therefore not helping as a FAQ. I posted this thread because it happened to me twice in one day (and both times the post with the alert was immediately after a post that I made... so this isn't a case of me not reading a thread.) I apologize if I'm missing something obvious and I can totally understand if your response is "this isn't worth looking into in the big picture of what we deal with," but from my POV, it really feels like something isn't behaving properly.

@zid: We didn't design the forum software, so it's not something that we can really improve or fix, and everything that I know about alerts and how they work (or don't) is posted in the FAQ.

We're probably going to switch forum platforms next year, too, so even if we could do something about them it's not a high priority.
