I just completed a trade, blew up some guys porch.. But because Good NY beer isn't always in stores here in NYC (at least I feel that way about; single cut, finback, other half), I'd like to hear what your guys go to extras are that you feel is a good taste of New York. I know sixpoint is great but they have pretty wide distro
Captain Lawrence! Lots of 12 oz bottle options - Palate Shifter (formerly Captain's Reserve Imperial IPA) has been a go-to for me recently.
Why not send some actual New York beers? This is an old post by our BA historian, jesskidden. They now brew their beer that you get in cans at City Brewing in Tennessee http://www.beeradvocate.com/communi...t-beers-brewed-in-brooklyn.35739/#post-446753
Besides NY-based beers (some of which are difficult to find except occasionally), there are also the beers that are easy to find throughout NYC but not distributed many other places (thinking of Westbrook and Almanac specifically, but plenty of others). But some area breweries you can find easily? Brooklyn Brewing, Bronx Brewery, KelSo, Transmitter, Grimm. That said, besides Grimm bottles, Singlecut bottles are pretty easy to find (at least at almost any city Whole Foods). The other city-based breweries are harder, but a number of Long Island beers are widely available (Great South Bay, Greenport Harbor, Long Ireland, Port Jeff). There is also the growler route - fill up a couple of 32s and send those along. That would really broaden your range of choices, as most NYC breweries are fairly ubiquitous around town.
Singlecut is a great extra. In fact, one of my partners liked it so much that we are discussing including it in the next trade we put together.
I second the Grimm and Capt. Lawrence route (I like to stock up on Golden Delicious for extras). Also, Flower Power is always something people love. When all else fails: Flower Power. Finally, not an NY beer, but if there are fresh PAs or IPAs from Maine Beer Co, I'll toss one in.
NY has pretty good distro, so even if it isn't an NYC beer people might be happy to get it. For example, Texas doesn't get Bells so throwing in an Expedition stout is a decent extra.
I ALWAYS go with two things Singlecut - cause whatever is on shelves is fresh and delicious Capt Lawrence - Palate Shifter I am so quick to grab kelso, flower power and fresh Maine All of the above are inexpensive and great beers that make solid extras
My favorite go to (not mentioned) is Keegan Ale's Joe Mama's Milk Stout. That's always a hit. Most places don't get Westbrook either so including some of their stuff always works.
I always throw in something from Grimm or Singlecut. I've had traders come back to me later asking for more from those guys, good stuff.
