I will agree on the 20ish % mark up at major stores. However I think you mean $6 per pack not per case on the dog fish.

Ha yes I have parked in NYC overnight a few times. I never said the parking wasn't outrageous. GD $32 a night or something blew my mind.

I've seen this too and I don't get it. Who would actually buy that? I would have trouble paying $3.70 for a gallon of that swill, much less nearly $40 for a 750.

I'm increasingly okay with some beers' prices going up in general. Don't get me wrong, I love that I can get world-class beer for <$10 a six-pack, and will continue to do so. However, some cling to the idea that beer is still a "democratic" drink, which should never be priced higher than $X. But if it's among the world's best beverages, maybe it's alright that some prices follow those of, say, wine – and in doing so, price out some of the entitlement and erratic behavior that goes on.

They are a touch high given the current pricing in Boston, it's somewhere around $15 a 4 pack. But maybe they only make like 18% margin on a beer that they sell a ton of and they're trying to make it back on St. Bernardus.

Nah, here it would be around $6 off per case of 4 six packs. But that's just here. Some states like NH, the liquor business is run by the gov't and they push the sellers around and get different pricing. Other states have different taxes and with european beer you even have to watch out for the Euro...

Some people are greedy, but most people who respect their customers and like beer are just charging what they need to keep their lights on. In the end you need to figure out if the price justifies the service, beer in a convenient location with a person who knows about the products, that extra 5% margin could be paying for your favorite staff member instead of having a dolt who knows nothing about beer.

My original point was that I found Eternal Sunshine for $10 (same price as it is at Al's Pizza Boy) at bottle shop in downtown Philly.

There just happens to be a 200% mark up on certain things in NYC , where a friend paid $32 + tip.
NYC bars are clever though. They seem to market it as more of a bottle service, rather than just a 25 ounce bottle of beer.

I've passed that Beer Table hole in the wall in Grand Central on numerous occasions and that place is definitely catering to the six figure finance guys commuting to Westchester County. And their selection isn't all that great either.

I believe that some people talk themselves into believing that certain beer is worth any price. For my money, there are too many great beers available at a reasonable price, Bell's two hearted for @ $42/case, Deschutes fresh squeezed for @ $48/case, or my local favorite Victory hop devil for $36/case.

People were paying 7 or 8 bucks a bottle for hop slam when it was around a few months back. Is hop slam that much better than two hearted? I don't think so...

on the flip side, Key Foods in Queens in my neighborhood has BCBCS 2014 in four packs for $19.99.

and I don't think anyone in my neighborhood, or even the store manager know what it is.

I parked for 4hrs about 8 years on Park Ave and had to pay $55 (most I ever paid), I'm assuming now it would be $85-100.

This actually is what I do. I've got 3-4 stores locally that I usually check in with every week or 2 in my beer buying. When I'm in the store, I get what seems to be the good deal on a particular beer I'm interested in (or some stores will lure me into something I normally wouldn't be seeking out but the sale prices is really low so I bite. I find this more frequent than not, where the beer prices are hit and miss from store to store in a given area. Rarely see a store that across the board that is more expensive in all their beers than anywhere else nearby or has all their beers discounted cheaper than other stores.

Against the Grain beers are by far the most overpriced bottles by far. Each bomber is like 20 bucks a bottle. Their beer is ok I guess.

The Allagash was a good buy at $13! It usually runs around $19-$22 range where I live.

The odd thing with Pizza Boy is they charge $30 per bottle for their own BA sours (that you have to drink on premise and can't take home with you). I was just up there for 1st time a few weeks ago, loved the place, but passed on their home brewed sour at that price point.

Hmmm that sounds very odd, have to drink on-premise, no take-out. Do they sell regular beers for on-site consumption? Any beer to go?

That is not uncommmon. Side Project and Perennial do the same. They will have releases for Sump, Abraxas, 17, the SP sours. After the release their bars will off the beer for on site only.

Apparently lots of people, the beer store I went into had them, and ... people bought them... they sold them all.

    it happens.

That have mixed 6ers to go, and Intangible Ales held a bottle release out of the back of the store (a Honey Saison for only $12 that was very solid so I bought 2). Not sure why they only allow their sours in 750ml bottles to be consumed on site. Maybe its a very limited supply thing and always want their stuff available on site.
