I live in Upstate New York and I'm an IPA lover. I encourage you to seek out the new DIPA from Saranac which is called Pacific Galaxy here on BA (rating = 97) and I've had it on tap twice and both tap handles had that name, but I just found out on Saranac.com they are calling it Southern Hemisphere IPA. I had their High Peaks IPA recently which was good, but this is several rungs up the ladder as far as taste and complexity. Here is a listing of hops used, "tropical and fruity hops of Australia and New Zealand – Galaxy, Pacific Jade, and Vic Secret.". Underwhelmed by Saranac's current beers? Try this one.

The Legacy was a step in the right direction. I've heard that Saranac wants to up their street cred in the craft scene, so I'm not surprised that they're getting somewhere. Looking forward to trying this.

I was really surprised by and enjoyed their Legacy IPA.

I will check this out. I really liked high peaks, and the bottle I drank was several months old — from when I bought it.

Sounds tasty. I bought their mixed box of 12 cans for $14.99 on the 4th. Their Legacy IPA was good and the Summer Pils was really good.

Update: I think it is only I kegs now. Also the tap handles did not say "Saranac" on them. The restaurant I went to bartender did not know what brewery it came from. They seem to be trying to fly under the radar for some reason, and I will be honest - I did not know who brewed it for 2 week, but would never have guessed Saranac.

Gen IV was a really tasty session IPA from their mix pack

Anyone else notice all the shady/similar/curiously high ratings and reviews from a bunch of newly created BA accounts from the past month on this beer? I tried the beer a couple weeks ago, it was better than most stuff from Saranac, but it was by no means a world class IPA. Checked the reviews after I had it, and it sure seems like someone is trying to manipulate the ratings.

Just throwing this out there but a wildly successful, massive brewery like Matt's cares very little about what people on BA think. We are not their target demographic.

Agreed entirely, and I never said it was them doing it. But go look at the ratings from mid-late June (specifically from June 17-22), and tell me they don't look like a purposeful effort to increase the ratings of this beer. I really don't even care, I just thought it was funny when I checked the beer's reviews and saw the obvious attempt at this, and was just wondering if anyone else had noticed it.

Still weird that at least 8 of the 26 or so ratings are from brand new users. @FATC1TY,
Is there someone on the inside who would be interested in looking at this?

Sorry. Generally, when someone mentions something like this, the implication is that it's the brewery skewing their numbers. I inferred.

I generally agree. The hop flavor and aroma on this was outstanding. Unfortunately the taste I had was a touch diacetyl laden.

that doesn't mean that their PR/marketing team doesn't have some resources allocated to improving ratings on sites like BA and RB, though. many large companies employ individuals whose primary job focus is to improve reputation and ratings in the digital sphere, whether it be thru traditional or exploitative means.

BA, after all, is frequently the top search result when people type in a specific beer. that matters for any business' marketing plan regardless of size.

I would think Matt cares more than "a little" about the #1 site in their business' niche, especially in an industry ripe with competition. and I think that, with releasing a hop-forward double IPA, folks on BA are exactly their target demographic -- at least for this beer.

yeah, the reviews are out of the norm. The percentage of new accounts without avatars and the percentage of ratings with comments are too high for this beer. This score is being artificially propped up.

People also could really like the beer. It's not like they have a ton of local options in Utica. I would give it some more time before calling a brewery out for writing reviews to keep the score up.

I took a quick look at the reviews for curiosity. There are a good number of those accounts that were created at the same time as the review, which make me question their validity. But there are about 1/2 that are older members, just small activity. Can you manipulate the BA start date of your account? A few were also not from the NY area.

Definitely a bit questionable IMHO. Haven't had the beer yet. Wouldn't blame the brewery yet. Could be marketing trying to boost rankings on the internet, as stated above.

Dude, there are a lot of SUPER shady reviews for this beer. Like over-exuberant "this is my new favorite beer!" reviews from total newbies who haven't bothered with profile pics.

I'd blame the brewery, considering BA prohibits brewers/employees from rating their own beers:

    Rating & Reviewing
Rating and reviewing your own place or beers, or paying others to do so, is not allowed and illegal under FTC guidelines. Doing so will result in removal of all content, account banning, and possible further action, without warning.

I wouldn't rule out the possibility that they are using a social media marketing company (which may or may not be keeping their client in the loop). A lot of brands do that nowadays and it seems to work. Marketing and brand identity can be more important than quality to some in the craft beer world. Just a thought, haven't had this beer or anything by Saranac in a million years. I'd certainly try it if I ran into it.
