What constitutes an "award winning beer/brewery"? They are putting themselves out there as an award winning brewer due to a vote at some limited local fest that didn't have much brewery participation.

Another local brewery strongly touts their efforts as award winning when they are kind of noted for ballet stuffing campaigns at local festivals and have not been noted or awarded at anything else. Another soon to be brewery already says they are award winning because of some past home brew awards.

This strikes me as misleading or plain severe stretching of the truth. For me it actually backfires on my opinion of them. A few of us having beers and burgers for lunch today (admitted beer junkies and, gasp!!!!, snobs) were talking about this and we're pretty much on the same page.

I get that breweries need to market themselves, especially new ones. So maybe I am being picky, but I admit this kind of thing looks amateurish. I am just curious as to other BA'ers thoughts.

Minnesota has a great beer scene that is only getting better and better. There are lots of new breweries opening and in order succeed they need to compete with Summit, Surly, Indeed, Steel Toe, Town Hall, Bent Paddle. That is a large list of local breweries/brewpubs that produce world class beers. (Aside from a few mis-steps). Most of the new breweries are not producing beer even close to the level of these and the many awesome out of state breweries we have access to, so they have to rely on gimmicks to draw in the lesser informed local beer drinker. A few may do enough business to survive for awhile, but eventually even the less informed drinker will realize there are better options available.

I took a look at the Only beer they have on BA, and couldn't help but notice there were a few people who rated it a 5, and have only ever rated that beer. One of the usernames is jpryes, seems suspicious to me..

I noticed another MN brewery owner did the same thing (rating own beer a 5, which is not supposed to be allowed on BA). It's not right.

That's so annoying to see. How can we report that? I couldn't find a button on the ratings page.

I'm not sure how to report it but if anyone knows, hopefully they will do it. This is more annoying than when people create profiles to rank a beer really high just so they can trade it for better beers (which I have also seen).

Maybe I'm just spending too much time on BA...

Who fucking cares. It's beer. This is a silly hobby. I burned my panties long ago and no longer give a fuck.

You're right, I probably shouldn't care. But now that I know this "award winning brewer" took the time to bump up his beer's score by giving it a 5, I'm probably not going to be giving him any of my silly hobby money.

That individual failed at BeerAdvocate. He added a duplicate listing for his brewery instead of amending the existing listing and gave a 5 for his place rating (he has not rated any of his beers as far as I know). Myself and a couple others have been trying to get this changed and merged since last summer but I do not think the powers here care. I just gave up on the subject. Now we have duplicate beer listings for two different breweries.

Over the years there have been countless examples of user accounts at Beer Advocate which have been created in order to act as a sock puppet, along with others who simply failed to understand what this site is about. This is no less true at the local level; I knew of several brewery owners and more 'beer guys' at retail doing so.

    It's a silly practice, and it's transparent.

As to the OP, I haven't tried any of his beers yet ("Gotta Tick 'em all!" ain't my credo, Broham), but good luck to Pryes.

He did a great job stirring the pot to get his name out there, but controversy sells beer even less effectively than penis gags.

Their product is good enough that they don't even need to do this. One of my favorite local IPAs of recent note.

Sorry, but aren't we kind of at this point in craft beer, Ive had plenty of "award winning" beers that are average to sub par. No need to get all worked up about it, it is what it is.

Yeah I've seen antics much worse then this by breweries with sub par beer. Pryes is actually a pretty good IPA, I have no doubt that they'll succeed if the rest of their beers stand the same quality.

Was at Ward 6 Saturday and they just tapped their IPA , I would say one in every 4 beers ordered was for their Miraculum IPA....I tried it and it was a solid beer...it's a good first beer from them...they could follow in Bad Weather's footsteps and turn into a great local brand.

Can't say that I am incredibly impressed with Bad Weather. They would not be on the short list if I was going to show case what Minnesota has to offer.

I think many on BA agree Bad Weather isn't quite the standard. To me Surly, Indeed, Steel Toe, Summt, THB, and so on are probably better representations. If you look at the Top 100 MN beers Bad Weather hardly cracks the list at like 95,98

We all have different preferences, Im sure there are beers lower on the list I prefer over higher rated beers. but just going on the the "Community" has rated.

Why yes I do like Indeed and I would consider them one of our great local brands.

You are right though, everyone has their own preference. However, I think if surveyed, Bad Weather wouldn't come up very high on the list. But that is the great thing about beer and the craft beer movement in Minnesota, we don't have to agree with the masses and have access to a large selection of good beer.
