Sorry if this is vague but I have a friend who is slowly starting to get into craft beer who resides about half hour away from Fremont. He likes big bold BA stouts but I was not familiar at all with what was available out nearby him. Fremont stouts would be obvious choice but I was not too familiar with their releases schedules but other than that are there other big popular stouts more readily available that I could tell him to keep an eye out for?

Yeah. Thirty minutes from Fremont could mean outside Seattle. Be more specific and we can be more helpful.

Yeah, almost Everett, and probably as far south as SeaTac.

Depends on traffic of course. If it's bad that could barely get you to downtown!

Guys, the original poster is from PA. His friend lives about "half an hour away from Fremont." Can't we just assume his friend lives in the greater Seattle area is looking for stouts. Just name a few of your favorites rather than getting snarky about specifics. Better yet, just ignore the post if you didn't like how it was phrased.

Anyways....if your friend is truly a beer novice and looking for fairly accessible dark beers, then I recommend:
    - Fremont Dark Star
    - Reuben's Robust Porter
    - Deschutes Obsidian Stout

If your friend is ready to dive deeper into the beer scene and seek sought after barrel-aged stouts, then you might look into:
    - Fremont's barrel-aged variants of Dark Star or Abominable Ale
    - Holy Mountain's Midnight Still (pretty rare, but I think they're tapping some in a couple weeks for their anniversary celebration)
    - Deschutes the Abyss

Hope thats a good start for you

No offense, but where was anyone snarky? Asking for more info to better help isn't a bad thing.

My post was devoid of snark. If the guy lives in Edmonds or Bellevue or Issaquah I'd rather not give recommendations for stores in Seattle.

I took the questions as trying to help the guy get clued in to what's right next to him rather than 30 mins away. Yes, he can go to the grocery store and just start exploring packaged shelf stouts. That PNW Stouts thread is perfect. Or, if we know a bit more about which breweries are closer to him than 30 mins, maybe we can turn him on to good beer in his neighborhood from someone who isn't big enough to have shelf space at the grocery store.

I wanted to know if he meant on a bus line or by bike or by those 50# city bike things we all apparently bought and then scrapped or by unicycle. Ok, I'm just making myself laugh here.

Homes, we can't help, if we don't know details. Maybe OP's friend knows what a Seattle half hour is, compared to a Philly, Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, State College, Williamsport, or York "half hour" is, maybe not. We're not busting dudes balls, we just need more info, in order to give good answers.

Hey, sorry for being pretty vague. My friend just told me he lives in Federal Way, which according to him was 30 mins from Fremont? Hes already been trying to pick up random things off the shelve to try. Not 100% sure which ones he tried. Was looking to see if theres anything big and popular coming up nearby him either on shelves or brewery releases that I can give him a heads up on to check out?

    Thanks again!

send him to Pint Defiance in Tacoma, not too far. They had all kinds of fun treats when i was there..

    or Tacoma boys market.

There's also a Total Wine and More in Federal way.

LOL!!! Maybe at 3:00 in the morning, but an hour drive is more realistic during normal traffic hours (during rush hour, could be more than 2 hours of driving). Still worth the drive, but as Honkduh suggested, Pint Defiance and/or Tacoma Boys is a much easier drive, and both places have an excellent selection of local and regional offerings.

Rereading what everyone else said, its fair to say my post was a touch dramatic. I was just hoping the original poster could get an actual answer to his question but everyone else makes a fair point. Carry on.
