While our numbers were down, we ended the year strong and I have a lot of hope for 2021 and beyond. Also, Fuck 2020.

Thanks. I love that you publish this information. Very interesting read. I use DuckDuckGo. I'm assuming (hoping) this prevents Google Analytics from tracking me. I'm sure there are a lot of others doing the same.

One funny fact your article reminded me of...
In 2010 I was very active on beeradvocate and didn’t own a cell phone.
Since I’ve been back (roughly 15 months) I haven’t logged onto this site on a computer once. Which is kind of wild, since I visit everyday.

Love the breakdown, thanks. Been around here a long time, with periods of more and less activity. I have definitely been more active in the last year as my interest in trying new beer has rekindled in a big and expensive way. BA continues to be a great resource, thank you for all that you do.

Thanks for the numbers and analysis. I read the whole piece BTW! It is definitely eye opening looking at number of reviews and States they come from. Lets get top 10 this year Connecticut!!

I also have been staying true to more forum activity from my end and expect the cyberfest to jack up user stats and new accounts.

Ive been here a long time too, slowed down with children being born, but ramping back up as they get older.

I use my phone for forum posts but never reviews, which I do exclusively on my laptop. But I also do forum posts on laptop. Not sure how that affects anything but anecdotal piece on my usage.

Again thanks for compiling the info and sharing. 2021 is already ripping along, lets keep moving forward!

Wow lots of things got validated for me (IPA insanity, growth of NAs) but also some surprises, lager beer additions, Other Half making a new beer a day on average?!

2021 should be an interesting time for sure beer wise.

@Todd A beer a day is easy money with 3 spots pumping out differently themed beer at each one.

edit: Hell, on Untappd I count 60ish this year. If it wasn't inflated because of anniversary beers, I'd think we may maintain two a day!

Does this mean if a user stayed logged in all of 2020 they would have contributed only one login of the 103,629?

Maybe something like this has been mentioned before, but would it be useful to offer a reviewing template as an option in (or for) the review field? It might encourage more detailed reviews v. ticks, and it would standardize the name and order of the aspects being rated or reviewed.

It hasn’t fully gelled in my mind, but after a reviewer selects a rating for look, smell, etc., provide a checkbox in the real estate to the right with a description like “add rated items for review” or similar. Or dispense with the checkbox and, in or for the review field, automatically create a layout that normalizes the naming and order of the selected ratings (look, smell, etc.), perhaps like the edit window popup.

Reviewers could enter their strings in the user-friendly template. Under the hood you would code it to merge/concatenate (whatever the code-speak is) the review to make it reader-friendly.
It'd still be good to provide auxiliary space for additional non-form comments by the reviewer.

    Does that make sense?

It might or might not get more users to the Review page, but it might get some of them to cross the 150-character threshold, if that’s important.

I’m sorry Illinois, one more beer review and we would have passed Massachusetts
In all seriousness love the stats, here is another vote for the lager revolution!

User logins are recorded each time a user comes back to the site after a period of time by either logging in or hitting the site with "stay logged in" selected when they last logged in.
It does. I'll give it some thought as I explore ideas this year. Thanks.

F 2020 for sure!! Always great to see the annual breakdown of BA activity, so thanks for sharing all the details. To your comment re: wishing to see more European or other non-American styles represented, I can say for me personally the new beers that I had in 2020 reflect changes in buying habits. I have primarily relied on curbside pickups at breweries and have rarely gone into bottle shops since last March. In fact I probably hadn't been in a bottle shop for about 4 months before Black Friday. So, lots of new IPAs, wild ales and stouts for me in the last year.

I think you’re right, I heard about it maybe early 2019 and then forgot about it until now.

I’ve been digging Hefeweizen’s lately, great stuff!

Were the “Top 10 most reviewed beers” the most-reviewed new beers, or the most-reviewed beers overall?
