Awesome thing the brewery is doing to support a local black owned business.

Triple Crossing Beer distributes cans of its flagship Falcon Smash outside the taproom for the first time

Until earlier this week, the only place in Virginia that beer drinkers could find cans of Triple Crossing Beer's Falcon Smash was inside the brewery. Now, the celebrated IPA that helped put Richmond brews on the map can be found stocked inside the beer cases at Urban Hang Suite, the coffee shop and social hub from Kelli Lemon on Broad Street.

“This is the one place [in the state] that will be carrying Triple Crossing beer ... besides the brewery,” says Eric Jackson, beer curator for UHS, of the partnership.

An Atlanta transplant, Jackson moved to Richmond two years ago, quickly establishing a social collective designed to help diversify breweries, called Capsoul. While he says he is excited for this exclusive arrangement, it’s not simply about checking the diversity box and bringing new clientele to both businesses, it’s about building a relationship for continued dialogue.

"We wanted to do what we could as a small business to support Black-owned businesses at the outset of the BLM movement," says Triple Crossing co-owner Adam Wirtes, adding that they plan to donate the amount spent by Urban Hang Suite to purchase the cans from the distributor back to the coffee shop. "Also, on a personal level, [we] really respect the owners and folks working at Urban Hang and hope this will lead to a long-term relationship."

While there are over 8,000 breweries in the U.S., the number of Black-owned breweries is below 70. Out of the nearly 40 breweries in the Richmond region, none are Black-owned, and in the state, there is just one. The presence of the flagship Falcon Smash cans — a product of the predominantly white craft beer world — at UHS has the potential not just to introduce beer to a new audience, but to build the foundation for change in the future. West Coast Clever Girl Now available

Our alternate flagship IPA, if we had more than one, takes shape for this run as a West Coast IPA. Brewed with the same grist and dry hop schedule, but with the focus on adjusting our water chemistry, kettle hopping, and the use of our favorite clean American Ale yeast, we wanted this one clean, bright, and crisp.

So, if it’s not obvious, we kinda weren’t kidding when we said WCIPA was something we’ve become enamored with, and this beer illustrates our exploration of a style that used to be everyone’s first real beer. We’ve even heard tell that in a certain Southern California city back in the early 00’s that ordering a “beer” meant IPA, and not any other style. We’d like to think this iteration of Clever Girl would have fit right in.

We taste bright floral orange, mosaic derived impressions of tropical-almost-blueberry, and plush candied grapefruit zest. 6% ABV and

    $14 per 4-pack.

Available TODAY beginning at Noon. First 3 are 4oz draft only while Summer Jetlag is 500ml bottle and draft.

We thought it was appropriate timing for a little something special. We we will be featuring a few our barrel aged releases from the past year in 4oz draft format. To coincide with that, we will be releasing a new barrel aged beer in 500ml bottles and for on-site draft.

    4oz Draft Only
    - Less Than Alone - A blend of various stout barrels, all purposely brewed to inky black levels designed not only to withstand the barrel aging process, but to thrive in the presence of the charred whiskey-soaked staves. Without question, this batch of Less than Alone has the oldest spirit barrel aged stock we’ve ever put together, with every barrel of the blend at 19 months old… it’s kind of a big deal. After maturation in barrels, the blend was moved to stainless for further conditioning on a measured, yet ample amount of our proprietary in house processed whole vanilla beans for what we sought to be our ultimate expression of our favorite stout adjunct.

    - VI - 6th Anniversary Blend - A selection of Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout comprised of 4 separate bourbon barrels originally containing 2 different types of American Whiskey. The combination of our purpose built Imperial Stout grist, a tightly controlled house ale fermentation, whiskey soaked charred deep dark oak, and the end all variable of time, has gotten us to this point. We taste impressions of barrel derived coconut, Madagascar vanilla, and cocoa powder, with a tobacco like dark brown sugar laden finish. We couldn’t be prouder of the team of people that make Triple Crossing what we are, and just as much for the unending support shown by all of you for the past 6 years. Take this one down, and we’ll see you all on the other side of this thing.

    - Social Jetlag (Fulton Only) - Our English style barleywine, aged in bourbon barrels for months on end emerges as a singular yet complex malt and bourbon infused liquid sense of comfort. Hand selected as always, these barrels reflect our dedication to patience and careful consideration of the final blend. ⁣We taste Cadbury like caramel filling, candied plumb dark fruit depth, with a brown sugar vanilla like finish.

Available to-go, delivery and shipping (VA, DC, PA) from both locations TODAY at noon.
    Summer Jetlag
    - Brewed in February of 2019, this English-style Barleywine was sent to rest in bourbon barrels for 16 months, all the while continually developing its barrel aged character. We then selected 4 of those barrels to condition on both a measured blend of Vanilla beans sourced from multiple worldwide regions, and in-house toasted coconut.

Speaking of those adjunct additions, this is where we’ll intentionally break the 4th wall for a moment - the goal of the adjunct additions in this and all of our beers that receive them, is to elevate the intrinsic character developed during the barrel-aging process, not to overwhelm the heart of what we worked tirelessly to coax out of the whiskey soaked oak.

The approach with our adjunct additions, much like in all things we do, is done with careful consideration. It’s a well thought out application of carefully selected, in house processed ingredients... it ain’t all gas and no brakes.

With that said, we taste impressions of hazelnut liqueur, bourbon soaked chocolate chip banana bread, and an almond joy essence finish. 12% ABV.

A couple 12oz - 6pks just added today for takeout / local delivery and shipping..
    ________________________________
Baby Falcon (4.5%) - Our beloved Falcon reimagined in a smaller existence. We notice impressions of tropical papaya, bright pineapple, white grape-esque melon, all of which culminate with that classic Falcon orange oil citrus marmalade. Entirely drinkable all day.
    $14 per 6-pack of 12 oz cans.

Little Hilltop (3.8%) - Our Franconian-inspired Kellerbier, with an effortlessly session-able ABV. Comprised of a simple grain bill with a thoughtful noble-hop kettle treatment. After primary fermentation was complete, Little Hilltop was krausened and then lagered for an extended period to condition until we felt it was ready for optimal consumption. We taste floral hop character, fresh country bread, rounded malt depth, with a pronounced bitterness.
    $13 per 6-pack of 12 oz cans.

Brewers’ Selection Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout

And so…after all this time, after of all the incredibly well supported batches of our previous spirit barrel aged beer, we’ve arrived at something even more special and more singular in execution and expression.

What we present today is the result of our need to self-reflect and recognize that, even with our ever increasing tightly controlled margins for what we consider worthy, we often find that certain beers stand up and demand special attention. The bottle of barrel aged stout consisting of just two oak barrels sitting before you is exactly that…

We sent one of our decadent, purpose built imperial stout recipes into two barrels from one of Utah’s most prominent bourbon producers, and then patiently waited. After 20 months or so, upon sampling all the barrels from that batch we knew these two were destined for greatness on their own, stripped down, with all of their complexity derived from the simplicity of our beautifully fermented stout aged on whiskey-soaked oak.

After giving the bottle a 10 min rest at room temp, the beers pours a deep mocha colored head that dissipates to inky black viscous stout. We taste impressions of but not limited to, special dark cocoa powder covered raisins, deeply burnt dark brown sugar, raw honey, sweet leathery tobacco, almost wispy campfire smoke roast, and marshmallow vanilla filling. 12% ABV

500ml bottles and now available at $20.50 per bottle.

New location coming to Midlothian just announced. Near the Rt 60 / 288.
    _____________________________________________

Today, we’re excited to announce our new location in Midlothian at Winterfield Crossing. We believe that in this community there are residents who have continually shown an increased demand for more engaging drinking and dining experiences. To that end, our intention with this location is to bring our purposefully chosen path of refinement to an area we feel is underserved.

Our new location will feature an elevated dining experience, designed by our in-house executive chef, and the on-site draft beer/canned offerings similar to our other two brewpubs. One of the more critical and exciting components of the project is that the brewing operations will be completely based on open fermentation, a process by which our carefully selected lager and ale yeast is allowed to ferment unencumbered by head pressure found in traditional unitanks or closed top vessels, thereby imparting a completely unique character to the beers. This brewery has been designed with a tight focus on both open fermentation and horizontal conditioning techniques that we otherwise have not yet been able to deep dive into.

The building itself, planned with JLL, Colliers, Perretz & Young Architects and the Blackwood Development Company, features a clean design of stone, glass and wood overlooking an expansive outdoor patio complete with awnings, fire-pits and walking paths. We look forward to bringing our beers across the river late 2021/early 2022. More details forthcoming.

I'm less familiar with Virginia beer laws (or how they are handling their brewing operations), but what's the benefit of opening up a third spot in the Richmond area versus opening one in NOVA or Charlottesville or another part of Virginia.

No clue about their thought process behind wanting to stay in the RVA area but I would guess they want to continue building in a market where they already have a really good presence and reputation. They also probably didn't want to have to deal with traveling all over the state to another location. Hardywood failed in C'Ville so that probably didn't appeal knowing they didn't make it 3 years. And NOVA....If someone is not familiar with the area they probably don't even want to deal with that. They don't seem to interested in distribution at all other than a few kegs that they send out to restaurants and shops from time to time. The concept for this new spot, other than being a restaurant and having their draft/cans available, seems alot link Veil's Funkhaust which is very close to their original tap room in Scott's Addition in that the brewing in Midlothian will be completely open air fermentated beers. You won't seem them brewing much, if any, of what they are brewing at Fulton there.

When they opened Fulton they were probably looking for a large space somewhat close to the original taproom they could grow into since Foushee is very small. The 3rd location will be nearly 30 mins from downtown and it's in an area that is really blowing up with residential / commercial development. There's also not a lot of competition from other breweries (yet) so they are getting in at the right time. Crazy Rooster opened about 5 months ago and is only a few miles away. They have been very successful in the area and received a great welcome from locals. People in RVA are also weird about traveling to other parts of Richmond or the bordering counties. Those in Short Pump / West End don't even want to bother going downtown and vice versa. Heck, event people living in Scott's Addition which is only about 6 miles away from downtown thinks it's too far to drive when its really only about 15 mins. Midlothian is close enough to stay in an area they are already established, have a big following and owners / brewers / staff can easily travel between when needed but far enough to where people that live in Midlo really don't frequent either of their downtown area taprooms regularly because a 20 minute drive each way is an eternity to them so they really are making themselves accessible to a new customer base and more regularly accessible to their current one that lives out there.

Just my thinking how maybe they were....

Does anybody know how long their mail shipping takes? I'll be in VA Beach from Thursday-Monday and was considering getting a delivery sent to the place I'll be staying, but I want to try to time it so it doesn't arrive too early or late.
