This opinion has reputational merit. Hope that didn't sound creepy.

I have a couple bottles but I haven't tried it yet. Interesting note, I heard they used the same barrels as they used last year.

Same barrels as in, the same brand of barrels? Or same barrels as in, they removed the BA mouflan and then just refilled the barrels again with a new batch of mouflan? The latter would explain why it tastes different, has less alcohol contributed by the barrel aging and also might help explain the price decrease from last year.

A friend bought a case and gave me a 4-pack so I intend to drink it again and see if maybe im just being overly harsh with my initial criticism.

Refilled the same barrels is what I heard.

I believe Troegs calls it an Imperial Amber. I believe my review correctly notes the barleywine aspect ... would the brewer not know what they want to call it? ...

I'm almost positive the chalkboard at Troegs calls it: Imperial Amber (barleywine) whatever that means.

Finally got my hands on some today, I hate to be that guy, but seems to be a shadow of what it was last year. I'll have to do a side by side, but I'm a bit disappointed.

I still think overall it's still a good ba barleywine, but it's not the magic of last year. I still have 5 bottles left from last year. Now I have to open them very wisely.

Does anyone know if last years was 100% bourbon barrel aged? They said this year was a blend of bourbon and oak barrels. I am wondering if that has something to do with it. Or time spent in barrels? Either way, I agree with @stakem regarding this year versus last year. I was absolutely floored when I had it last year. This year, not so much.
