Intro Notes - This guide is not intended to be an exhaustive list of everything about visiting Minneapolis/St. Paul from a beer standpoint, rather it's intended as a primer to hopefully answer the majority of the basic questions people ask such as "What breweries should I visit?", "Which bars are worth going to?", and "Is a drive to Duluth or Hudson worth it?". If you're looking for something specific, skim through the bold headers for what you want. If you've read through this and still have questions, ask away, but please give us enough information to answer your question. The most helpful information you can give us when you're looking for recommendations:
    1) What part of town you're staying in
    2) Whether or not you have a car
    3) How much time you have

On the question of recommended breweries, it's always a bit difficult to build a list without personal bias creeping in. I've tried to mostly stick to commonly held opinions rather than my own (views, but some people are likely to disagree with me. When in doubt, check the BA Places reviews, there are a lot of reviews on there that can provide depth that a short summary like this can't. On the two tiers of smaller breweries, the differentiation isn't one of quality or superiority as much as a feeling that the Tier 1 breweries get recommended more often than the Tier 2 breweries. Many of the Tier 2 breweries are churning out great beer, and I would recommend visiting if you have time. Additionally, there are plenty of other breweries making solid beer, but most people visiting only have a certain amount of time and I've tried to provide the best options.

The guide will be updated on a quarterly basis (or maybe a little less often...) and if anyone has any advice on sections to add next time around, feel free to respond and/or PM me.

    General Advice -
    Public Transportation, cars, Uber/Lyft/Taxis
If you don't have a car, Uber/Lyft are good options to get around but you'll obviously want to plan your brewery order well to maximize the utility.

*Note - No Sunday alcohol sales in Minnesota. You CAN get growlers filled and buy 750 mL bottles at breweries/taprooms.

    Basic Resources:
mnbrewery's excellent map (https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=zf-NUOXSi-o0.kLjWBdR3AtFI)- Lists all the breweries/tap rooms in the state. Many are included in the list below, but this map is all encompassing. (potential to make an expanded map that includes liquor stores and beer bars, etc.)

Who Fills Which MN Growlers? (http://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/who-fills-which-mn-growlers.196417/)- Minnesota recently updated their growler laws to allow breweries to fill ANY 32 oz or 750 mL growler (i.e. other brewery's glass), but it doesn't mean they are REQUIRED to. This thread list which breweries will fill any growler for you and which will make you buy their glass.
A few breweries have also started filling 750 mL crowlers and will sell pre-packaged 750 mL bottles to go as well.
MN recently started allowing breweries to sell growers/crowlers/750 mL bottles on Sundays. Large breweries (over 30,000??? barrels/year production) a.k.a. Surly, Summit, August Schell's, are not allowed to sell "to go" beer on site. Surly is included in this.

Hudson, Wisconsin is about a 30 minute drive from Minneapolis. Wisconsin DOES have Sunday alcohol sales as well as the ability to fill growlers at liquor stores. Some notable breweries that you can access in WI but not MN:
    New Glarus
    The Bruery
    Dogfish Head
    Cascade

The Big/Well Distributed Breweries - Since you're into beer, you've probably had their beers before. If you're a fan, each brewery has its pros and cons that might make it worth visiting:

Would love to get people's feedback on the above before I create a new thread with this information.

I've seen other threads that provide a short description and some useful info/tips for each brewery, so it would be awesome if people could take a stab at that for a brewery or two that they are very familiar with. Just quote the section/brewery and give your update, and I'll pull it in when I create the new thread.

I'd say that if someone were to head over Bang, they might want to hit Urban Growler as well, considering they are literally right next to each other. Also, I'd like to note that Cascade is available in Mn. Steel Toe is in St Louis Park, which is a suburb of Mpls (I guess it's almost close enough to just lump it in with Mpls), and for convenient clusters, I'd make note of the Green line light rail route, which has a lot of breweries within reasonable walking distance of a handful of it's stops. Also, and perhaps from a public safety standpoint it isn't something we should be recommending, we have the Nice Ride bike rental program as a transit option. Cheers.

I used guajolote's (how do you tag someone in a post?) from the Northwest forum when i visited Portland and Seattle last year and I love how he has it layed out, here is his latest Portland post . Not saying that is not a great collection of information though, it should stay updated depending on breweries quality and new breweries coming in, I only posted his thread for reference. Instead of newcomers to the area needing to post new threads on where to go they can be directed to this post, at least for the cities area. Awesome post and thanks for getting this all together for everyone!

I like mjryan's idea to add routes like the green line, there are a lot of breweries close to that line.

I think we could add in a few others that are worth the visit, I suppose they would be under Tier 2 from your post:
    Harriet
    Northbound
    LynLake

Then a newcomer section because its tough to place new breweries until they have been open for a good while:
    Lakes & Legends
    Able Seedhouse + Brewery
    Lake Monster
    56 Brewing

I also think links help newcomers, or just for quicker looking into.

For events, the GetKnit events I think are excellent introductions to the area if they want to visit or are vising during one those, they regularly have breweries bus tours and light rail brewery hops. I've done a few of them and they always very well organized and very reasonably priced.

    General Advice -
Public Transportation - Minneapolis/St. Paul have a light rail system with two lines - Green line (Downtown Minneapolis to Union Depot/downtown St. Paul) and Blue Line (Downtown Minneapolis to the Airport and Mall of America).
Fares are paid at the station before you get on the train, $2.25 per ride (rush hour) and $1.75 (non rush)
Buses are decent - I advocate for using Google Maps transit option to figure out routes, stops, and timing.
You can also get prepaid cards or short term passes: https://www.metrotransit.org/go-to-card
Cars - Parking isn't that bad in Minneapolis/St. Paul, compared to other large cities, so car travel/rental isn't a bad route. If you stay close to either downtown, there are enough clusters that you can hit that have plenty of stops within walking distance that you can get to with public transit or a cheap Uber/Lyft/Taxi
If you don't have a car, Uber/Lyft are good options to get around but you'll obviously want to plan your brewery order well to maximize the utility.

I incorporated the feedback from both you and @mjryan. I agree that it is helpful to link to the places, I'm just too lazy to do it and wanted to get this posted. If someone wants to go through and post a section with linked places, I will incorporate them into the big post when I re-post it again. I'm also planning to split all of this into a couple of posts in the future, so it isn't so massive.

If someone wants to take a stab at detailing/listing some places that would make up the "clusters" listed and maybe preferred routes, I think it would be super useful.

Sisyphus makes great beer, but I think they are better aligned to Tier 2. I am not sure I would push outsiders to check out LynLake and Harriet. 56 has been open quite awhile and does not have a taproom yet.

Lowertown and Selby Ave are very noteworthy beer-centric clusters in Saint Paul, while West 7th is where you go to get drunk on Premium.

Groveland Tap would be a good addition for a beer-focused eatery.

Casanova gets occasional shipments of 3 Floyds. I am not sure if it is worth noting due to the infrequency.

Am I the only one on here that actually looked Harriet? I think their German styles are excellent, although I do see your point, beer travelers seldom want to go out of there way for a pilsner or a dunkel.

I hate the generic question of coming to town where do I go? Depending on your go to styles the answer could be completely different I love sours and German wheats so fair state is the first place I recommend, but if you are looking for a boozy barley wine or double ipa's that won't help you much.

Travail should be listed under it's own category of "Most Fantastically Unique Dining Experiences In The Country".

Also of note...New Bohemia has a location in Eagan now. Able and Lake Monster should both be ahead of any of the places mentioned in Tier 2, in my book. Lakeridge Liquors, Vadnais Heights should be listed for beer stores. (Shameless plug, but hey...can you blame me?)

I am going to be flying into Minneapolis on Sunday July 17th. I am there for a conference and will be staying at a hotel near the convention center. i am not 100% sure which one yet. They have not told me yet. Anyways I will not have a car and plan on using my feet. I am wondering if the following places are walk able from the convention center (not so much distance wise, but safe to walk):
    Lakes and Legend Brewing (Wednesday)
    Fulton Brewery (Tuesday)
    Butcher and The Boar (Monday)
Surly (most likely will not walk, but would like to know anyways) (sunday)

I probably will not have a ton of time for too much else. Figure one place an evening. The only day I have a little more time is Sunday, which I was thinking of spending a big chunk of time at Surly. I a flying in around 9:00 am and figure to take mass transit to Surly, then probably cab or walk back to hotel.

Thanks for any and all feedback.

Boy I don't know the lay of the land that great but a walk back to convention center area from Surly would be a nice hike.....probably 3 or 4 miles....Fulton is probably walkable...a few new places near there too not sure if worth stopping at or not as I have not been there yet..

Not sure on the safety of the routes...I am outstate..

Lakes and Legends and Butcher & The Boar are within walking distance of Convention Hotels also 8TH St grill and Mckensies Pub even Devil's Advocate , Surly is not, you also have Modist and Fulton that are on the fringe of walking. Also Red Cow Town Hall and Republic all very close which could be reached easily by bike (Nice Ride).
