I'm a craft beer noob and not sure if this question belongs in this thread? If not than I apologize. Now to my question; I know VSB was released in '12. How much longer will it be in "excellent" shape before the fruitiness starts to fade? I'm looking into getting a bottle or two depending on its flavor shelf-life.

    Cheers,

    Tony

VSB was actually released last August (2013) and knowing Dan's track record with fruit beers, the flavor of the fruit should remain strong, but I guess only time will tell. It's drinking great right now...still a lot of fruit.

At the release (August 2013) the brewer said that this beer is still carbonating in the bottle and will be fruitier and less sour now than it will be with some age. He recommended aging at room temperature 70-78 degrees until fall or later.

Of course I drank a bottle after work later that week because I tend to like fruitier sours. It tasted fruity with some funk and I could tell it will become more sour. Opened another bottle during Super Bowl in February and it was still good and somewhat less fruity. I wouldn't expect the fruit flavors to ever completely fade away but it will get drier and more tart.

Smurfbeer and HighWine, thank you for your responses. I am just wondering whether or not, I should pull the trigger and buy a bottle or two? VSB comes with a pretty significant price tag on it, but everyone raves about it. I had the Strawberry Rhubarb and it was tasty and have a bomber of raspberry tart that I might crack open this weekend. In your opinions, is it worth hunting down this whale?

Vsb is one of the best if not the best American made wild ale I've ever had. Sadly the price at this point is pretty hefty. If you want to get one prepare to make a huge offer just to get someone to even think about your trade. I've traded a couple full disclosure and wish I didn't. It's that good!

Why would a craft beer noob chase VSB?

VSB is the best American wild beer I've ever had, and quite possibly my favorite beer of all time. This is only speculation of course, but considering what a jammy fruit bomb VSB is, I seriously doubt the fruit will fade significantly anytime soon. It carries a hefty price tag, but IMO it's a pretty remarkable beer.

VSB will age nicely. Had VSB many times and it gets better every time I have sampled a bottle. I have drank a VSB about every 2 months since last August when it was released. Cracked my last one 3 weeks ago. Its is still very fruity; every bottle has been noticable more sour and funky with a drier finish. That fruit wont drop out for a few years easy. Just like every single R&D series beer that Dan C. has brewed; the beer will age fantastically.
