Can anybody tell me when Westvleteren changes from "Extra" to "Extra8" to "8". I have a case of Extra but I don't know from what year.
I tried to find some info about this and managed to dig deep and found this thread: https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/tell-me-about-the-westvleteren-dubbel.7572/ It does not answer your question but might give you a hint. I also checked what was checked in and rated at untappd. The first person who checked in Westvleteren Extra (1982) also uploaded a pic with the cap which only says EXTRA.
This is a tough question. as I believe Extra was brewed for quite a while. Check here for my recent post with pictures of my bottle. Apparently, it could be 1968 or before because depending on the taste since it is thought that the Saint Sixtus Abbey stopped using wooden barrels for aging their beers in or around 1968 and switched to using nothing but stainless steel barrels. If you get notes of tobacco and wood, it could be pre 1969. I will crack mine soon and see what happens.
