Good morning BA! For me what I dislike about the rice lager in general is the sour taste of boiled rice water as the beer warms. I think that and too much dms are the reason that you are often encouraged to drink these these beers very cold and therefore very fast. I am not going to do that . This beer is 3.9% I even read the reviews. i saw the words"rubber" "diacetyl" and our @woodychandler said sulfur. In my experience rice can smell sweet. I'll be back in a fewminoots. That's one word fewminoots. Cheers!

If all you wanted was a light body then why are there no adjunct IPA's?

If you do not hoist your glass properly in the biergarten they ask you "Are you melancholy?"

    Caldera Lawn Mower Lager.

Two row, pilsner malt, rice, flaked barley, willamette hops. Very pale. Just gold . Like the twinkle in the sunrise. Malty rice scent is mostly neutral. Grass and biscuity. Drinks softly and creamy with a light malt. There is diacetyl. It's on the margin if it is too much. Buttery rice if it's too much. Soft biscuity flavor and the grass makes it just herbal. Light bubble. Very light in both texture and flavors. it tastes white not golden although it does have breaddiness or grainy texture.

As it warms shy hop pepper and a little bitterness to just tingle on the tongue. You can taste the rice prominently and it does not leave with any sour after taste. There is sulfur. I would say well done. Perhaps the rice is favorable to lighter beers in general. The only brewer I know of that tired to use rice in a different style is a saison from stillwater and a tripel from the bruery. I like the idea of the rice saison.

The other thing rice does is it flattens so it favors the noble hop and its herbal. Two row is breaddy like pils malt but softer. Rice is neutral, a touch sweet and imo stemmy, pils malt is crisp dry and has more breaddy or toasty quality than the other two. Flaked barley ( instead of oats - oats have been tried in the IPA to lighten body) as the specialty grain for head retention, gives grainy texture ,creamy and used in dry stouts. This was not a corn AAL. It's the rice that had to agree to a slight bitterness or else you would bring out more flavors from it. And let me put a myth up on the board- I would have to drink all six of these to catch a buzz. Cheers BA!

Done with night shifts and drove straight to the cabin. Having a beer, taking a short nap, then a bunch of mowing.

Good morning BAs! It's starting off foggy here in NW PA today. Yesterday I tilled my garden for the first time in several years. After I came back inside, Mrs. Lizard said "It's 94 outside - you shouldn't be working out there". I pointed out that I wasn't outside, I was inside, and obviously I'd survived. I LOVE hot weather!! I enjoy sweating like a peeg (In my best Tuco voice)! Of course it rained in the evening so I'll have to rototill it again.

Maria, interesting take on an AAL - rice and corn seem to be the most popular adjuncts with corn bringing only sugar and DMS to the brew while rice brings a few nutrients as well.

    Today's New Breakfast Beer:

This is one of the better brews I've had from Brewery Vivant. I'm glad it's only available on a rotating basis; otherwise, I'd have to drive to Grand Rapids every month or so to stock up.

Some more beer **** from my recent trip to Germany:

Small (5 to 7 gallon) kegs of Schlenkerla Raunch Marzen just waiting for me to drink them!

Schlenkerla Krausen - Came out the day before and is only available in the bier garden at Schlenkerla. Usually gone within a week or so. Schmeckt gut!

A Weihenstephaner Hefeweißbier. The glass I bought earlier today. It came in a Weihenstephaner gift-pack (free glass) that’s in the supermarkets around here at the moment
A beer like this deserves it’s own glass in the end.
    Cheers all!

That stillwater rice saison - Extra Dry - is really well done. If you haven't had it, I recommend it!

A can from 05/16/17 that is as good as ever before cleaning up the aftermath from yesterday's storm that pounded us with hail for 20 minutes. The trees took a shredding and leaves are everywhere. Another hot steamy day on tap with more storms forecast for this afternoon and evening. Enough small talk, I better get my groove on!

Another one of my "gotta still work" beer choices, some OB Hotbox with just enough caffeine boost to fight the nap urges. Gotta mow this morning, then out to lunch. [As an aside, got a pint of Stone Enjoy by... last night, maybe the best version so far for my taste - solid. Also tried P'works Mango Guppy session, which was fine but didn't get much mango or honey in there, despite that they are both "in" the beer supposedly. Just as well.].

Still enjoying beer from my recent haul from Germany.

Now having a Hefe Dunkel Naturtrüb Kapuziner Weißbier. It’s a dark German style wheat beer.

Dunkel (dark) it is indeed, as you can see. Very tasteful also, but less refreshing compared to normal Weißbier. In taste this makes a perfect winter Weißbier I think. It’s not a ‘winter warmer’ in the sense of high alcohol percentage however.
    Cheers!

French Apple Cake with White IPA with yuzu

My beautiful cake also pairs with gerwurtztraminer and riesling.

To add clove and star anise would embolden or darken this cake. You could then add raisins. I had to fill 10 inches so I tweaked the recipe with a half cup more flour. I added cream and nutmeg instead of more butter and rum. Pecans because I had some and lemon. I have saved the most daring beers in sierra nevadas case for last.

Pungent grapefruit, dank weeds, earthy spice and an exotic citrusy fruit. Drinks bitter but not harshly . Lemony, dry, crisp.
