Been a while since I kicked one of these off, starting today with Deschutes: Obsidian Stout

This is a really confusing beer… The label says “Export Style Stout Aged in Bourbon Barrels with Mixed Cultures”, but it tastes a whole heck of a lot like an Oud Bruin.

Ha! I was just wondering why the later start, almost was going to kick it off myself. Only three weeks until this thread will be full of books, beers, advocates, steins, thistles, vases, candlestick holders, and hopefully the beers those advocates are drinking are being revisited after neglect.

But for now, I cleaned up some glasses from the past two days as my morning beer warmed. Went upstairs and the GF asked where her beer was. I said, "You see me getting my phone, right? I can't pour a beer without my camera. You know that!"

Our ark survived the deluge. Unfortunately our two cats can't help the species survive as they're both fixed. The rules should've been more specific.

    Cheers, all :grinning:

Woot Stout. Man, this is a great beer. Great price point. Rivals the big boys IMO. Cheers.

Good morning BA, have a great Saturday! Hope everyone has a nice day. I really don't have much going on today, no real need for emergency review hauls or anything at the moment. Going to be a nice relaxing weekend.

Fantastic Gose as always, glad this is back in season. Flavors of tart/sour cherry, lemon, lime, green apple, wheat, cracker, coriander, sea salt, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness. Moderate fruity/lactic tart/sourness and lightly spicy/tannic fruit finish. Balanced cherry/lacto acidity, salinity, and grainy wheat creaminess in the mouthfeel. Highly drinkable and refreshing, slightly puckering. One of my all time favorites in the style. I drank over a case last year. Does not feel quite as lactically sour this year, but still fantastic and easier drinking. Already grabbed 3 packs, glad they are 6'ers. Will grab more as I thin the stock out. Still waiting to see the Dirtwolf 6 packs. Pricing is definitely better per ounce.

Awesome IPA! Got a fresh pack this week, been a while since I last bought it. Flavors of big grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, lime, melon, green pepper, citrus rind, and pine hops; with some light honey, toasted bread malt balance; and herbal, floral, grassy hop earthiness. Moderate pine/citrus rind bitterness; moderately dry and sticky/resinous finish, with a touch of balancing grainy malt creaminess in the mouthfeel. Never astringent on bitterness, and very bright on hop flavors. I love this stuff. It showcases a lot of the unique characteristics of Equinox hops in the flavor profile, along with the citrus/rind/piney notes of the C hops that are there. Big fan of Equinox.

World class saison. Finally found a super fresh pack last week. Flavors of lemon zest, grapefruit, pear, pineapple, peach, melon, orange peel, pepper, and clove; with moderate wheat, cracker, bready malt; floral/grassy hop and yeast earthiness. Good sized peppery yeast spice with some floral/grassy bitterness. Smooth/crisp finish; with some bready wheat creaminess and light hop stickiness in the mouthfeel. Medium-high carbonation with nice crisp dryness, but not bone dry/prickly. Refreshingly smooth for the ABV. My new favorite go-to saison now that Boulevard came here last year. It is still amazing with some age on it, but I love it fresh to get all of the hop vibrancy in combo with the yeast character. I really need to keep this around more often.

Incredible! I made sure to stock up this year, grabbed 4 last week. I remember regretting only grabbing 1 last year. Flavors of dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, molasses, fudge, spicy rye, dark bread, vanilla, toffee, bourbon, toasted oak, pecan nuttiness, licorice, raisin, fig, and light smoke/char. Light-moderate roast/char bitterness and bourbon/oak spiciness on the finish. Full bodied creamy/silky and lightly slick/sticky/chalky mouthfeel. Lightly increasing roast/char dryness. This is a flat out amazing beer for the price. For being partial barrel aged, there is still plenty of barrel character going on. Big malt complexity, in combination with pecans and fruity yeast esters. Dangerously smooth. Mildly warming and minimal booze for the ABV. The more recent batches were definitely better than the original 2013 they had released in overall complexity and barrel presence.

    Cheers

New Arch Enemy album is going to be amazing this year. Jeff Loomis is one of my favorite guitarists, and the fact he joined this band only makes them that much better. I still love the work of Michael Amott though, he defined this band for decades.

One of my favorite newly discovered black metal bands. Haven't been able to find this specific album yet, but the newer ones are just as awesome.

What better way to start the day . . .

Herbal, spicy, slightly coffeeish, toffeeish aroma with something like dark figs in the background. Not really catching any hops but perhaps these heavy flavors are covering that up.

Taste on entry is dark toffee quickly followed by the herbal element. Don't know exactly what that element is, perhaps a lager yeast at warmer temperature fermentation has created that but it's in there and it taste good. Mid palate I'm getting more of the plummy, ripe fig influence which is just adding layers to the first impression flavors. Spicy, clove like threads weave in by the finish and linger in the aftertaste along with a touch of coffee but no roast bitterness.

Ok, in another thread I mentioned my previous beer was most likely my favorite breakfast/morning beer. I also mentioned sometimes I want something lighter and usually sour (to cleanse a fuzzy palate, let's say)...[IMG]

Wasn't as impressed when I had this "right off the canning line," but I'm digging it more as I "revisit it" after a month. I think the bitterness is not fighting the tartness as much as before. Apricots really come out.

Still wet, though not raining, it is rainy. We were bombarded by alerts of road closures due to trees down around our area. It was so much, in fact, that one of my dreams included a scene about getting out and seeing all these felled trees. None that I see in our "back yard" - most importantly none then fell on us.

    Edit:

"Spit it out! Spit it out, you freeloader!!"

Note: just saw article about Aslin finding a place for a new tasting room. Given their demand/production, it'll be interesting how they can supprt cans and on prem sales. Hoping they work it out!

Good morning, BA's. It's a cool and drizzly morning with an almost autumn feel. We're heading up to Sussex County to do some walking and (for Mrs. Mac) bird viewing. If I'm prescient, there will also be some beer drinking before the afternoon is done. Cheers!

... Beltway Brewing, a [mostly] contract-only brewer. Enjoying this one a tad more than originally as well. Palates are a funny thing. Also, might be going for an epic first page, 4-post day, @CanConPhilly (though admittedly, the last two have been half-pours :disappointed)

Having a Nøgne Ø Trans Pacific IPA. Tropiske frukter og furunål. Very nice.

Nøgne Ø is not widely available here. But when you find it prices are lower compared to Norway (where this beer is from) I noticed. All because of taxes ofcourse. The same way our La Trappe tends to be cheaper in Belgium, that's within walking distance where it's made.

    Cheers!

Long story short, we lost @robt001 a couple months ago to a heart attack in his sleep. His birthday was yesterday and we got together with his family to celebrate his life and that he brought all of us together. Here were my top five.
