Pretty nice west coast style IPA, especially for the relatively low ABV.

    Forgive the glassware, I'm tired...

Leftover St. Bernardus from Saturday's tasting. I didn't realize that it was 2.5 years old as I bought it when it showed up last November. Never trust fresh stock as fresh beer. Enjoy what's in your glass today!

I have been thinking about picking up a St. B Xmas since we can buy singles now but fear that it would also be old as dust. Is the bottled on date easy to decipher?

Something about this cold, wet day . . .

Dark, almost black color with light brown cap.

Aroma first of ripe figs, followed by chocolaty malt and something brightly herbal in the background.

Taste on entry is where I first notice the cherry. I was expecting something cough drop like but it it's more like ripe black wild cherry. Main flavors are roasted malt with accompanying bitterness along with some earthy wild mushroom touches that hold into the aftertaste.

    Full texture with balancing carbonation.

This is an odd duck which seems neither to swim or fly and walks clumsily. If you're going to impose a cherry flavor on a dark, bitter Stout this dryish black cherry flavor is probably a good choice because it goes along without conflict. At 7% this may have been designed as an after dinner finisher but it's too bitter to fill that role for me.

I agree with @Beersnake1 , don’t worry when you find a bottle St Bernardus that dates back a couple years. Even when it is not stored in perfect cellar conditions.
In fact they say Belgians like this even tend get be better over time.
    Cheers!
