Some time ago, I wanted to make an alt beer, or what I thought an alt beer was. I found a recipe in the internet, brewed it, fermented cold with wlp 036. After clarifying, I thought it was really really good. One of the best beers I've made. It was a nice, basic, easy drinking beer that went well with hot Texas summer evenings. After listening to a couple of pod casts (homebrew happy hour, and experimental brewing), I realized that I did not brew an alt bier as the color was not dark at all (it was a golden color). It also was not remotely bitter. And while Alts have been described as a having mild bitter, I wouldn't say the beer I brewed even had mild bitterness. It didn't really have hardly any bitterness, and was instead pleasantly malty, but not sweet. I am not BJCP certified, and my descriptions might be off. So apologies if my nomenclature is incorrect. Here is the recipe I used. Can anyone tell me what beer did I make?

    7# Munich (9L)
    3.5# Vienna
    0.5# Melanoiden malt

    1 oz Hallertau 60 min
    0.75 oz Tettnang 60 min
    0.5 Czech Saaz 15 min

    WLP 036 @~ 60 - 62

You brewed your version of an Alt. Sounds like a great beer.

...or your version of a Dunkel...as long as it's quaffable, who cares? Style guidelines are for entering beers in competitions you want medals

It doesn't fit square into any category, but is sort of a stronger version of both an altbier and a Vienna, but lighter in color. Who cares what it is... enjoy it! It still comes closest to an altbier. So it's a little light in color, but not flavor, so, no big deal.

I don't care so much what "the style" is... I just want to know what I should call it, since it isn't an alt. It is good though. 10/10 would make again. Maybe I should copy one of my local breweries and just name it: "Beer."
