Does anyone prefer stouts in other spirit barrels over bourbon? I see rum, brandy, tequila and wine barrels but my consensus is that bourbon is always be better. A couple apple brandy have been close.

I voted for bourbon, but brandy, rum, and wine have all worked well, too... Not usually a fan of Scotch or tequila barrel-aged beers...

I voted bourbon, which I LOVE, but my sample size from other barrels is vanishingly small. I'd love try more from brandy barrels in particular.

I voted bourbon, but it definitely depends on the beer. I had a Black Tuesday aged in wine barrels (so I guess both bourbon and wine), and it was amazing. Scotch works sometimes, but not always (for me). Interestingly, I will be getting a Black Tuesday aged in Scotch barrels in a couple of weeks when it's released, so we will see!

I like rye as well but I'll let that fall into bourbon for this poll.

Big fan of whiskey aging in general. I'd reach for anything in that family before any other barrel.

Assuming I'm buying the usual - stouts or barleywines.

I had MOA imperial aged in Pinot barrels. That was very good but one of the only wine barel beers I’ve had besides Baltic thunder, it’s a porter though in red wine barrel.

I do like Bourbon aged stouts and would like to try a tequila aged stout or sour. When I was at Allagash a good bunch of years ago they had something resting in tequila barrels, can’t remember what it was.

    Enjoy

Bourbon obviously but I have had some pretty good souts aged in Brandy barrels. Rum barrels work very well too.

Tequila aged beers tend to coerce me in to spending money. Sometimes I just seek new and exciting tequila aged beers in trade.

    I came to say this.

I love Rye whisky, and favor beers aged in rye whisky barrels

Rye. Should have been an option. You'll need to count the Rye votes, and subtract them from the Bourbon votes.

Regardless of type of barrel, the spirit cannot dominate the beer. I could just dump a couple shots of bourbon into 12oz of beer on my own. The beer needs to taste like beer first, with the spirit adding an aspect, not taste like the spirit with some beer added in. Most breweries are not good at that.

I voted bourbon. But recalling that all bourbons are whiskey but not all whiskeys are bourbon, I'll put whiskey barrels into a distant second place (and although it's also a type of whiskey, Scotch is it's own separate category and not under any consideration by me).

Voted bourbon, especially if we’re including rye. Apple Brandy isn’t far behind though.

I really like Rye, but I recently had a RIS aged in Apple Brandy barrels and doggonit that was excellent.

You are 100% on the money. I don't drink mixed drinks much anymore. So I don't care for a BA Beer that tastes like it has a shot in it. I still want to taste the beer. Actually, I've had some nice pilsners & marzens aged in plain oak barrels and really likes having the subtle oak wood notes without the whiskey notes.

Yup. In general I prefer straight wood (That's what SHE said!) over a spirits barrel.
