In the hunt for beer, I wondered if there's particular stores / websites / methods people use to get hold of decent beer? I notice most of the "top rated" stuff is American, and very hard or impossible to get hold of?

I've seen 'ales by mail', 'beers of europe', 'beer hawk' websites which seem to have decent coverage - is there any one place you'd swear by?

Currently, I rely on local supermarkets or random trips away.
Recently had a can of Beavertown smoked porter from a farm shop (which I loved, btw) - but I won't be there again any time soon. As I'm not in London, I feel like I might be missing out on some top beers? Is this the case?

    Any advice?

With having a modest budget my beer supplies come from a varied list
The supermarkets still occasionally will put out something worth supping
Tesco's Finest American DIPA & Traditional Porter
    Sainbury's Beer Hunt stuff
then with Morrison's & Asda there are some gems to be had Hawkshead Lakeland Gold etc
    Then onto the upmarket supermarkets
there are some good M&S beers, usually the bottle conditioned ones.
Waitrose & Ocado have Thornbridge etc
then Booths is the intermediate step from supermarket to Specialist beer shop.

I do have the occasional specialised beer shop treat
balanced out against frequent checks of budget stores B&Ms & Home Bargains as they often
have beery treats & quite often around a pound.

I occasionally but in a online beer site order, normally quite big to spread out the P&P cost
but recently the difference between the sites & the specialist stores have been diminishing
so that when the next time I'm quite flushed I see myself making a big purchase
where I can pick out the bottles myself in store.

"I notice most of the "top rated" stuff is American"
well maybe it is & maybe it isn't there is some great US stuff & some over-rated as well.
Fresh local micro/nano will probably be tastier than import.

I am sure there will be a local brewer & outlet close to your locale

+1, hit up your local breweries. Fresh local beer can usually beat out 90% of the stuff you find on shelves.

    Thanks, guys.

I'm lucky enough to be a Northerner , so Booths is my go-to. I'll stick with that, and I'll look up my nearest breweries (is there a recommended section / website for this?)

I'm with you on the overrated stuff - it's the curiosity that kills me. I want to try as much as I can, even if it is just to say "meh". Heady Topper, for example, top of the charts. I'd like to be able to tick off my list, if nothing else! I might have to try and acquire some transatlantic pals...

I buy most of my beer direct from the breweries. I am a strong believer in supporting local businesses - especially if they produce great beer - and I like getting to know the brewers.

    Oh don't get me wrong
I'd love to try Heady Topper & Zombie Dust & Pliny
but a while back Founders Breakfast Stout, BCBS & Westvleteren 12 were on that list, like.

They appear from time to time on the sites & in the spec shops or someone here will get a crate & offer swaps & shares

but you know, Buxton is as good if not better than a lot of the B+/A-/bridesmaid/2nd place US craft big guns

I've tracked down in a Obsidian Stout Manchester beer shop a couple of weeks after Firestone Walker

Which Manchester beer shop, if you don't mind me asking? Or are you keeping it a secret haven for yourself?!

    Beermoth on Tibb street
I always try to share beer knowledge
The beers I've got logged here have been over just three years, quite often it's just waiting for them to show up.
I've got a feeling in my water some of the big names are coming up soon.

Brilliant. Thank you. Manchester is only a short naked jog away! In fact, I'm there this weekend. I'm sure the gf won't mind a detour... :astonished:

p.s. by my reckoning that's 427 beers a year; or 1.17 a day. Emperor by name... :sunglasses:

That is a nice looking beer shop, very similar in outlay to Valhalla's Goat in Glasgow.

There are quite a few good beer shops around Stockport - The Beer Shop in Heaton Mersey, Heaton Hops and Bottle in Heaton Moor, High Peak Beer Co at the Market Place all selling excellent local and imported ales. Slightly further afield there's the aforementioned Beermoth, Harvey Leonard's in Glossop and Chester Beers and Wines in Chester. They get some exclusives, I picked up a Sierra Nevada/Dogfish Head collaboration beer there.

I'd also recommend Beer Merchants for online orders and sometimes Brewdog. If you join the mailing list you will get e-mail alerts about new beers for instance a couple of weeks ago they received a hoard of Cantillon beers but they sell out quick.

Just generally, in terms of trying top rated beers on here, you can sometimes pay a fortune for imported stuff particularly from the States. You can get excellent beers from Buxton, Siren Craft, Thornbridge etc from many sources which will be fresher and cheaper than imported ones. Recently saw a Stone/Smuttynose 9/10% IPA recently being sold within a month of it's 12 month expiry date selling in double figures for 750ml bottle so you might not be paying for what people rave about.

You can always pick up random bottles from bars to take away, but they hike up the prices.

Still patiently waiting for the day dogfish head core range is available here again, Gutted I wasn't aware of them at the time.

@Georgefox great call on the alerts. I was on beerofbelgium.com the other day and they had Westy 12, didn't order, low and behold it'd sold out the next day.

I made a trip to Beermoth just today, and picked up some Siren Craft, and got some Buxton from BeerRitz in Leeds couple weeks back. I've traditionally been a stumble-across-new-beer-so-try-it kinda guy, so the searching and buying is something I'm getting used to, and I'm definitely still learning. I'm already getting the impression that the "top-rated" stuff is perhaps skewed slightly, and that chasing those is perhaps unnecessary. Certainly in the short term.

@hdtrice If you're not against importing you can find Westy 12 on belgianbeerfatory.com and it doesn't state it's out of stock. I've considering ordering but it costs 13.50 euro's for a 330ml bottle, so got to pass on that for now.

Buxton make consistently good beers Their The Living End aged in Bourbon Barrels was world class and cost about £5.

I also saw recently Three Floyd's Dark Lord available for worldwide shipping from the Mikkeller website. The cost including shipping when converted would be about £70. Unfortunately, the best thing to do would probably be to go to America. However, Founders KBS has made it's way here recently which is an amazing beer. You can always find Stone products too.

Breweries like Alesmith and Lost Abbey have good distribution but the 750ml bottles only makes them expensive.

I love Heaton hops, I spent my bonus in there
it was amazing to choose my bottles whilst drinking some great cask & craft keg.

I think Bier Cell in Altrincham has one bottle https://plus.google.com/117938991621702307713/about?gl=uk&hl=en
I think its about £12 but when you factor in postage (maybe international) or even the cost of a trip to the place in Belgium
it might be worth it to give it a try.

@emperorbeavis was in bier cell just last week actually, didn't spot it there. Made do with mcchouffe and la trappe tripel.
Yeah heaton hops is ace, though only popped in the once. They threw in a first chop/shindigger saison in free because it was out of date, but still good.

    They might have sold it
I have seen it on the back wall just above eye level for a while & was last there 2 weeks ago.
Have you been to Brewtique in Macc?
When I went in last year found it slightly cheaper than Beermoth & Bier Cell and a bit friendlier
