This is not a style I've tried much... maybe call it the "Blue Moon" effect... but, anyway... what are some good MN-brewed examples?

I haven't had many from MN, but I would definitely venture away from Summit's Witbier.

Didn't hate Summit's but it's not great (although for $24 for the 24 can summer sampler at Costco I wasn't hatting on the Wit for $1 a can). Blackstack had one I enjoyed as did uh HeadFlyer, Blackstack being the better of those two by far.

Thanks for the comment on Blackstack.

One of the liquor stores I frequent has a Boom Island wit and a Lakes & Legends wit. Anyone have opinions on those?

I've been thinking hard on your intitial question and really can't think of any stellar whits made in this state that I can think of off hand. Basic Wits. Birch's did a black pepper wit that was good and it wouldn't surprise me if they did a nice one there but I have not had it if they did. Town Hall has had a decent wit in the past.

The two you list there are OK to below average.. I prefer the Boom Island Wit but it's not great. Lakes and Legends to me was below average but maybe it has improved.

Don't care for Boom Island's wit at all (as I feel about most of their beers). Lakes and Legends is so-so. I've come to the conclusion that making a good wit is pretty difficult.

I fully agree. It seems like a lot of Minnesota breweries (American breweries really) use the witbier style as the base for an extremely light, inoffensive summer beer. Most American made wits I've tasted have had no yeast character whatsoever, and very little spiciness. In other words they are American Pale Wheat Ales inaccurately called witbier.

Haven't had it for a year or so, but I actually enjoyed the one from dayblock a good amount. Not sure if they still have it.

I thought that Birch's White Pepper Witbeer was great. Unfortunately Birch's hasn't brewed it for quite a while but hopefully it will be back later this summer.

Yea, I wonder if they will brew it again. They seem to be in shandy and fruit Berliner mode again this summer. I wonder if wits just do not sell in this market. Waconia Brewing had one when they first opened and it was going to be one of the flagships, but it did not sell well and they switched to the current American pale wheat beer. The wit wasn't great but it was one of the very first beers that was brewed on their system so they did not get it really dialed in and they haven't touched the style since.

A few years back I had a wit beer at Canal
Park Brewing that was pretty tasty, Wetsuit Malfunction. I just checked the tap list online but it's not listed.

Birch's had a really nice Passionfruit Wit, I liked it because it didn't taste like a Wit

I was there a couple of weeks ago and they had a beer called "Wetsuit Malfunction," but I'm almost positive it was a German Wheat. Guess they changed the recipe.

I've had both, but it was so long ago I had Boom Island. Their Tripel is by far their superior regular beer they make. Lakes & Legends was pretty solid but nothing I remembered much afterward.

Stopped into Unmapped Sunday for their opening and had their Wit beer (1 of 2 offerings) and I thought it was excellent, definitely recomend it. I would have liked to have brought home a growler but looked like it was a pre-fill situation (at least for now) and I don't need any more glass at home!
