Wait, what? I get that the JK's brewer was supposed to be heavily involved but fit Christ's sake, we already have two answers to Jester King. One is arguably the best farmhouse brewery in the country, and the other's regular beers are on par with the easily available JK beers I've had.

Reading over some of the old press releases, beer release announcements and emails to their cellar society always gives me a bit of a chuckle. Needless to say, my reaction would be somewhat different if I had "donated" money to the kickstart project, became a cellar member and was STILL waiting for an opportunity to buy my first beer from these guys.

Having tried some of their beers, I'm not too disappointed. I liked first three W&P beers I had more than the first three de Garde beers I had 3 years ago and now de Garde is one of my favorite breweries. I can see people being frustrated about the amount of time it's taking but I guess that's just not as much of a big deal for me

This has gotta hurt. I have no idea how they can get away without being more forthcoming with details.

One of the reasons I was happy to sign up to the interest list for Alesong Brewing (another new brewery looking for some buzz before releasing any beer) was that Alesong didn't give off any of the FOMO-inducing vibe of Wolves & People.

Also, Alesong didn't ask me to give them a bunch of money up front, so there's that.

(Alesong thread, for reference: http://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/alesong-thread.404801/ )

Breweries that brew wild ales never give a specific date as to when their beers will be ready. They're ready when they're ready. Nothing more to announce until their first batches are ready and the opening of the tasting room. It's not like they're brewing IPAs, pales, ambers....

It's actually amazing that they're as far long as they are considering how long it's taking breweries to open in urban locations with existing public utilities versus a farm barn with no sewer or water.

Still doesn't lessen the fact that they've had an interest free loan from members without a single beer out for what... almost a year now? Just seems shady to me, but to each their own.

You have no clue what you're taking about. They just got their license this past December.

Yes but they've had the crowdfunding $$$ for how long? As I said, to each their own.

But they've had your money for how long?

Edit: Not necessarily your money, but the money from the crowdfunding effort. Which was collected in December of 2014.

That's a pretty sweet deal for a brewery lol

Of course it's a sweet deal. That's entirely the point, right? It's an alternative to high-interest debt financing. Clearly it works, because many breweries don't have an issue raising this capital. It's not like everyone didn't recognize this going in. 16 months feels like a long time, but given their status in December of 2014 (no license, just a fricking barn that needed renovations galore), how on earth is anyone surprised by this?

It just seems a bit much tbh. I can think of two breweries that have offered memberships before they had licensing, yet well after W&P, and both are up, running, and have released their first member beers. Of course, you are correct, they weren't in a barn.

So it took longer than everyone anticipated. What were they supposed to do? Refund all the money and say hell with it. I hate to break this to you, but life isn't always perfect. They're still going to get what was promised to them. It seems like most of the people bitching about this aren't even the people who paid.

I'm assuming SeaAle was objecting to your use of the word "shady." Pretty hard to argue with your comment about receiving an interest free loan (but then again, that's one of the primary advantages of doing a "kickstart" as opposed to trying to get financing from a bank).

I haven't read over the entire thread for a while (and really don't want to), but as others have mentioned, the principles on various occasions have listed various times and events where they expected their beers to be available. At least that's my recollection. Almost across the board, most of those plans have not panned out.

I've never gotten the impression that the folks at W&P have ever intentionally tried to mislead people, but I will say that it sounds as if the whole process of obtaining a location, getting it up to speed, getting licensed, and producing beer, has taken far longer than anyone anticipated. My impression is that this has led to a lot of disappointment, and even resentment at times. For a lot folks, becoming a cellar society membership represented a considerable investment, and understandably, they want to see a return on their investment at some point.

I'm still hoping for the best, and am very much looking forward to sample their beer at some point... but I'm also very happy that I decided not to become a cellar society member.

I could be wrong, but I don't think this was the case. The only times I recall them saying they would have beers available were the truffle fest dinner thing and the recent members event, both of which they came through on.

See what you made me do? Now I had to go back and actually research this:

Anyway, I was basing my comment on a post from JouerAveLeFeu last November:

"No. That's not what's upsetting me... What is upsetting me is that they said they would have a "Portland launch party, date TBD in November" of last year. They did not. They said they would "look forward to welcoming visitors during the Craft Brewers Conference in Portland, OR in April 2015". They did not. As a "Cellar Society Member", I haven't heard anything. The only information is what's on their social media. Hell, they haven't updated their website in over a year."

Once again, you can't brew beer until you're legally allowed to. How hard is that to understand?
