The Brewtal Truth Guide to Extreme Beers
By Adem Tepedelen
Lyons Press, November 2013, $19.95

Adem Tepedelen is a celebrated beer writer who’s contributed to the likes of Imbibe and All About Beer, but he’s also a staunch music lover who’s written for monthly metal bible Decibel for years. When Decibel’s publisher found out about his brewsy work, it was time for the subjects to come together. His Decibel column, Brewtal Truth, was the inspiration for this ode to tunes and tippling of the most extreme order. Tepedelen interviews musicians who love craft beer—like Municipal Waste drummer Dave Witte and Pig Destroyer guitarist Scott Hull—and brewers who love metal—Surly’s Todd Haug and Three Floyds’ Barnaby Struve among them. He also provides pairings: Try Russian River’s Damnation with a little Bon Scott-era AC/DC, or Savannah’s Kylesa with Simtra Triple IPA from California’s Knee Deep Brewing Co. Brewtal Truth is a raucous joy to read, and will hopefully encourage craft beer and metal lovers to continue exploring common ground.
