Collaboration with Black Bridge Brewery

The German were drawn to Saskatchewan in the 1700s for the vast farm land. With their arrival came beer style such as the Kellerbier, a young lager with a distinctive and delicious flavour.

Cloudy golden with lots of champagne like carbonation, and 4 fingers of white head.

Smells of malts, Saaz hops, dried hay, and apple cider.

Tastes follows the nose, with the addition of some pine and floral fruitiness. A little grapefruit on the end, but overall there's a balance of malts and hops, and its very light in taste.

Light body, with light carbonation.

Got in the Collaboration pack with Red Racer, drinking in Muskoka, ON, Feb 24th, 2018. My first brew from Saskatchewan, so I'm excited about that. Decent keller beer with a touch of west coast hops.

Review #7 from the 12 pack mix Across the Nation
Pour a pale yellow slightly cloudy with 1inch white head. Some lacing.
Some yeast and hops medium carbonation. Quite refreshing but a bit anonymous.
Not expressive enough for me.

Light gold with decent head. Some citrus and malt on nose over a crisp body with considerable hoppiness on finish. That's to style so tasty kudos!

330 mL bottle from the LCBO; one of six featured in their "Across the Nation Collaboration (West)" mixed pack. Bottled Mar 22 2017 and served slightly chilled.

Pours a cloudy, translucent 'lemon drop' yellow hue, topped with one finger of loose, bubbly white head. It stays in place for several minutes, receding off until only a thin, creamy cap and foamy collar remain, splattering a modest amount of lacing around in the process. Smells fresh considering the bottling date; the aroma includes notes of clean, crackery, doughy pale malts, together with hints of lemon peel and grassy, floral hops. Lightly yeasty, with indistinct suggestions of stone/orchard fruit - put simply, I like it.

A rather balanced affair - partly due to a firm continental hop kick on the back end, which nicely complements the grainy pale barley malts and their doughy, crackery sweetness. Subtle hints of lemon zest, apricot and apple mid-sip are then brushed aside by the grassy, herbal hops and their moderated bitterness, followed by a light peppery spiciness at the finish; some of that herbal bitterness carries on into the aftertaste, which dries the palate out somewhat. Light in body, with moderate carbonation levels that impart a decently crisp bite. This is a tasty, refreshing, thirst-quenching summer lager that didn't skimp on the ingredients.

Final Grade: 3.86, a B+. I've had only a few beers from Saskatchewan over the years, so it might not seem that impressive when I say that Wide Open Spaces is probably the best of them all. Indeed, I've had better kellerbiers - this one seems a little fruitier than the others I've tried, and the hop astringency that dominates the back end of the profile is also a little out of character - but I can't honestly say that I didn't enjoy this beer from start to finish. Hell, I kind of wish I had another bottle to crack open right now, because it's just that sessionable. Thumbs up.

Bottle 6 of 6 of the Across the Nation taster's pack. This collaboration with Black Bridge Brewery in Saskatchewan. Served cold into a pint glass.

Appearance - Fairly pale yellowy gold color, plenty of haze and a somewhat frothy looking finger and a half of white cap. good retention and minimal lacing.

Smell - Grainy, subtle banana and wheat, but with an earthy twist. Faint spiciness of rye. Grain dominates, but this is a fine example of the style.

Taste - Plenty of grain again, some earthy hops in there and a distinct spiciness. White pepper possibly. A subtle banana and caramel sweetness way in behind the other flavors and only for a fleeting moment or two.

Mouthfeel - Nice middling body, fairly expressive carbonation and dry finish.

Overall - A good if unspectacular kellerbier that was a worthy addition to this six pack.
