A: Straw yellow with a decent sized, though soapy white head.
S: Very faint smell of sweet hops and grains.
T: Hardly a flavor, but the flavor is an innocuous sweetness that reminds me strongly of a Rolling Rock.
M: Heavily carbonated and light bodied.
O: Overall, this is a cheap beer you can find at some stores like Trader Joes. 4 dollars for a 6-pack of an American Pale Lager that tastes better than Rolling Rock or Budweiser. So, not a great beer by any means, but not bad either.

And here I thought Trader Joe's only offered Trader Jose and beers with "Trader" in the name! Pleasantly surprised to find this steal $3.99/6pk) on the shelf. Poured half a glass into a pint, drank the rest of out the can.

L - Golden lager with an inch of foam that doesn't stick around for long. Looks like any classic AAL. The can itself is vintage-looking and one of the reasons why I picked it up, granted, I knew I was getting into a Keystone/Natty caliber beer.

S - Metallic at first, then some banana, bubble gum, and cereal grain

T - Similar to smell, has that cheap, metallic flavor up front, but the malty corn/cereal grain finishes and is actually not half-bad

F - Thin, watery, very little carbonation but definitely a drinkable beer on a hot day

O - Can't be too critical of this low-end beer, good for TJ's offering this brew. Need to try Simpler Times and not sure I'd get this very often, but for a cheap, drinkable beer, I'll give it a passing grade.

Golden yellow beer, white head, minimal lacing. Little nose, typical malty aromas mainly. Taste could have been worse: it was a malt-driven, slightly sweet (corn?) lager flavor that should please those who mainly or only drink the mass-produced AALs and APLs. Not hard to drink, refreshing enough, and cheaper than a lot of more pretentious beers. Mouthfeel very slightly creamy, very slightly oily. Poured from a can bought at Trader Joe's (of course).

Body : Name Tag Lager pours a mellow golden body with a nice clarity.
Head : 3 fingers tall but fizzles out fairly fast. Leaves almost no head towards the end.

Initial : Mostly musty grains, some corn and wet paper.
With Agitation : Candy corn notes come out much heavier.

Front : Very mild malt flavor, a touch of hop, and mineral water. Quite a bit of fruitiness out front too.
Back : Begins to dry to a more solid crisp malt flavor, with a touch of pastiness.

Sort of pasty, but still carbonated and crushable. Semi-pasty finish.

Overall : This beer, the first few times I had it was pretty decent. Then I found out it was from Minnehas and I realized all the flaws so prominent in their beers here. For $3.99 a six pack, it's not terrible. Still, there's better beers for only a little more money.

clear straw color with a finger of head that quickly dissipates

smell is bread and sweet corn.

taste is pretty weak, some sweetness coming through, although I cant really describe the flavor. its not that pleasant, but easy enough to pound.

feel is really light and heavily carbonated.

overall not great. the best thing i can say is that its beer?

Pours clear gold with a small white head that fades quickly, leaving only spotty lacing. Smells and tastes like grain, cooked corn, cloyingly sweet malt, Not good.

Light to medium bodied with too much carbonation. Not worth seeking out or trying again.

355ml Can brought home from Washington DC:
This one was a disgustingly cheap & nasty beer that seemed to have a lot of adjuncts coming through as well as skunky off-flavours that reminded me of everything I usually hate about mass produced pale lagers. The only plus at the time was my thinking that it was my first beer from Wisconsin until I realised I'd already tried a few from there in the past

Looks, smells and tastes like cheap American beer. Tolerable but not as good as Simpler Times lager which at least had a decent citrus note. Best thing I can say is no off or skunky aftertaste.

Pours a clear straw yellow with no head or lace. Interesting grape aroma. Bland taste that I would describe as seltzer water with a hint of beer. Crisp, light and refreshing under the right circumstances; I'm actually kind of enjoying it after a long workout.
I don't find it as bad as most do here, and prefer it to most macros. At least it's clean and I don't detect any off flavors. Nevertheless, overall, pretty forgettable.

It is very difficult to distinguish this from Simpler Times lager, even when doing a side-by-side taste test. Both have banana-like qualities and are good value beers. Name Tag, in my mind, is essentially a watered-down version of ST, and therefore deserves a lowered rating.

Surprisingly good flavor having been brewed at Minhas. I'll have to check out other brews by them as I now see a drastic improvement to all their high gravity stuff I had years agio. Drinking it out of a can, so who cares what it looks like. Smells like, tastes like.... Yep it's a good beer!

Poured with a substantial billow of foam above a clean light complexion. Sickly sweet, almost cloying on the nose. I get grape bubblegum, barley sugars, grape must and caramel, which I doubt is intended.

Light Cabernet buttery flavors hit the tongue with bubblegum, grain and cereal malt. This is much sweeter than your average adjunct and that's not good.

12 oz. can, coded "13 338 06" on 4/24/13

Notes: I was under the impression that this was a Trader Joe's beer, but perhaps not. Regardless, it's one of the worst beers I've found at Trader Joe's. It's sweetish with no hops, bitterness, or malt flavor... just a thin 'corn' note. It's inexpensive, which is great, but it's not good enough that I wouldn't pay more to get a better 'retro' beer (Genesee Cream Ale is just $12.99 for a 30 pack, which equals .43 a can!).

Lets keep it simple. Pours a pee yellow color with hardly any head. Aroma is full of malts and raw sugar. Taste is a horrible explosion of oversweet malty, sugary, sticky liquid. Mouthfeel is bad, because I can still taste it...Not quite worth the 67 cents I paid for the can

Pours clear gold with a foamy white head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Foamy streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, sugar, and some corn aromas. Taste is much the same with grain, sugar, and frosted corn flake flavors on the finish. There is a very mild amount of grain bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty poor beer that is extremely sweet and tastes almost exactly like frosted corn flakes cereal.

Serving type: can.

I found this at Trader Joe's for a pretty good price, and the graphics were sorta amusing in the old 70's generic "BEER" can kinda way, so why not give it a shot. My can said "Name Tag" instead of the "Red Oval" pictured.
Looks pretty standard for a "lager". Gold, with a quickly evaporating head and lots of bubbles racing their way to the top.
Smells a bit of toasty malt and some apple/pear fruitiness.
Rather sweet in the flavor. Reminds me a bit of some of those strong Polish lagers like Tatra and Zywiec, except this one can't boast 6-8% abv. Those also taste cleaner with more hop flavor in the finish, and are generally enjoyable to drink. This one has a rather assertive, artificial generifruit gummy candy or jellybean fruitiness in the finish and no hops to balance things out. Not particularly dry, and weak in mouthfeel and body. The first couple sips were ok, but I'm wishing I didn't have 5 more of these to drink. The carbonation starts out very lively, but gets fairly flat about halfway through, and you're stuck with something akin to a less than great apple cider. Definitely the worst beer I've had in a while.

A: Pours a clear pale yellow in color with moderate amounts of fine active visible carbonation rising fairly quickly from the bottom of the glass as well as some faint lemon yellow highlights. The beer has a finger tall foamy sudsy bright white head that reduces to a large patch of thin film and a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass. Light amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Light to moderate aromas of sweet corn and grain adjunct malts and a very light amount of floral hops. Maybe a touch of rice adjunct malts as well.

T: Upfront there is a light to moderate flavor of slightly sweet corn and grain adjunct malts with a very light presence of rice adjunct malts. There is a very light flavor of floral hops which imparts a light amount of bitterness that lingers for a while but with a slight chemically aftertaste.

M: Light bodied with moderate to heavy amounts of carbonation.

O: Again, not a bad AAL/American Pale Lager but certainly not an interesting beer. Slight chemical flavors in the aftertaste. Easy enough to drink, best served ice cold.

Bought as "Name Tag" from Trader Joe’s. Pours clear pale golden, with thin white head. Sweet malt, and corn on the aroma, taste is pure sweet grains, with a fading sweet finish. Finishes fast. Somewhat watery mouth feel. A pale lager through and through, but refreshing on these hot summer days.

12 oz can into a pint glass.

A: Pours a clearish golden color. The head is a finger high, with a white shade and crap retention. No lacing is left behind.

S: Umm...what is this? It smells oddly nutty. Come to think about it, it's really butterscotchy too. Some of the cereal grain notes are relatively well concealed, at least. There isn't much good to say about the nose, mainly because it smells like it will lead into a pure, unbridled tastebud terror.

T: Oh my god, it does. It features the massive cotton candy sweetness of the Simpler Times lager I had earlier, but somehow worse. Now it hit me - it's a diacetyl bomb that someone dumped five year old Werther's Originals into. The only reason I'm not giving it a one because it doesn't fall into the "bad flavor and no flavor at the same time" just has a shitload of bad flavor.

M: Heavy and super sweet - I don't want to drink this crap anymore, quite frankly. Moderate carbonation.

O: After the first two lagers from TJ ended up being not terrible, it kind of gave me hope for the others. Too bad two okayish lagers would lead into two horrid ones. I'll give the slight edge to this over the Trader Jose crap, but only just. They're both easy drainpours either way.

Picked this sixer up at TJs a couple weeks back. Let it sit in the fridge for ample time to make sure it was chilled fully before cracking open.

A: pours a crystal clear orange / copper with descent (1) finger head.

S: I have no sense of smell - but the wife seemed to think metal and urine were sufficient. She reinforced this with a, "I am not making this up." Mostly like metal.

T: For a cider this is not half bad as the taste of freshly cut apples is strong from start to finish. A tad bid of corn meal & buttery popcorn to finish off the clean crispness. Wish I had some peanut butter to mix in it. The more I drink the more apparent the metallic flavors jump out and dance around - reminds me of when the annoying drunk shows up and ruin a bad party. I Maybe they should toss some Lacto in here and call it a sour.

O: In all seriousness this is a terrible beer. But again - as a corn cider its drinkable.

Minhas Brewery's Name Tag Lager pours an expectedly pale straw-yellow body. The Snow-white head falls as quickly as it rises. It leaves behind an appealing island of oily film. A few thin streams of bubbles rise steadily towards the top. Nice.

The nose is much better than most adjunct lagers. It's sweet and malty: apple and pear cider up front and just a hint of herb-ish-ness in back. I'm excited.

Alas, the taste doesn't follow suit. A heavy hand has poured in the bittering hops; the malts can't handle them, and we're left with an indefensibly bitter, slightly sour brew that doesn't do much to please. The mouthfeel is fine, but a mouth feel is only good insofar as it complements the flavor of the beer. The flavors here are so poor that they render the mouthfeel score meaningless.

I'd reach for a Name Tag lager before I picked up an American Budweiser, but I can think of a few unappealing American macro lagers that I'd reach for before picking up one of these again.

Type: 12-oz. can
Glass: 0.5L stein
From: Trader Joe’s is La Mesa (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $3.49 for a 6-pack
Purchased: Sept. 26, 2013
Consumed: Sept. 26, 2013
Misc.: N/A

Poured a honey golden clear color with 1-to-2 fingers of off-white head. Decent amount of layered foamy lacing along the sides. Above average retention on the top most of the way down.

Smelled caramel, banana, kiwi, Circus Peanuts, faint butterscotch, bubblegum, butter, grape and gloves.

Tasted like a watered down version of the smell with a gross aftertaste. Watery versions of banana, kiwi, grape, Circus Peanuts, corn, hay, bread and butter. Can’t put my finger on the aftertaste, but it’s not pleasant at all.

Light body. Thin texture. Soft carbonation. Watery, abrupt finish.

Very, very bad. If I didn't have another five to finish, I'd say I'd never try it again.

Appearance: This one looks like beer. Yellow, a little fizzy, and not much else.

Smell: Far off in the distance is the smell of corn and beer.

Taste: Sweet, grain, corn. In other words, beer.

Mouthfeel: Watery, light, with no aftertaste.

The Verdict: Meh. Another cheap beer from Trader Joe's, it's a step up from Old Milwaukee and the like but it's still a cheap beer. For the same price I'll take the much better tasting Simpler Times from TJs. This one is too thin and watery.

Name Tag Classic Lager has a thick, white head and a bubbly, golden appearance, with some decent lacing left behind. The aroma is of a sickly-sweet grain husk, and the flavor is of sickly-sweet, dank, wet grain, foul sugars, and just the slightest bit of unpleasant and flaccid hop bitterness. Mouthfeel is light to medium, and Name Tag Classic Lager finishes wet, dirty, and yucky. Overall, this is a bad, and almost undrinkable beer. You screwed up, Trader Joe’s! For those wanting to sample an exceptionally bad beer, this is one to check out.
