473mL can
Served in a stemless wine glass

This beer pours a murky, ruddy brown hue with visible chunks suspended in it. It is topped with a few inches of tan head that leaves spotty lacing.

It kind of has a Lucky Charms marshmallow smell. More berry but a stale marshmallow presence.

The berry purée flavor is compromised by the stale marshmallow flavor.

Medium bodied with a run of the mill mouthfeel

It is like a berry version of Southern Grist Marbits.

473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Aug 31 2023 and served barely chilled.

Pours bright and mostly clear, its golden orange-hued body crowned with an inch of lumpy, soapy white head that collapses within two minutes. A snaking ring of messy lace clings to the glass, with a frothy collar lasting on - looks normal thus far. Surprisingly muted aroma for a DIPA with numerous unorthodox ingredients: I'm getting faint whiffs of vanilla and icing sugar, with hints of blueberry, lemon, hibiscus and leafy hops. Interesting in terms of variety, but lacking the punch of a true DIPA.

Approachable flavours of blue- and blackberry, together with the vanilla, lactose & custard sweetness, make for a highly quaffable brew - though it's quite unlike any other DIPA I've had. There are also suggestions of oatmeal, hibiscus tea and whipped cream, but it's really the berries stealing the show here. Finishes sweet, with icing sugar, blueberry and marshmallow, as well as just a hint of hop resin bitterness; the 8.1% is pretty well-masked, becoming more noticeable as the glass warms. Full in body, with light carbonation that softly tickles the tongue, contributing to it's silky-smooth, soft, fluffy mouthfeel.

Final Grade: 3.87, a B+. If ever there was an Ontario brewery I'd expect to attempt (and successfully pull off) a DIPA as strange as Psychedelic Puzzle Factory, Flying Monkeys would be the bunch to bet on. I don't see this as an especially fantastic DIPA, but it's very well-made in that it effectively pulls off the "bumbleberry custard" angle it was aiming for. My complaints are solely preference-based: if I am in the mood for a DIPA, there is little to no chance of me gravitating towards a sugary, relatively gimmicky brew such as this. But then again, the gimmick has been performed so expertly that I still found this to be an enjoyable, if unusual strong pale ale. It's definitely worth trying at least once.

Pours a gorgeous bronze with a fizzy head. The nose is of metallic berries, perhaps a bit of bubblegum. The taste is an odd mixture of hops and cotton candy, with a good dose of berry. There is also hibiscus.
Would be a good summer beer for sure. A bit heavy to be completely refreshing though.
Interesting but I wouldn't make its consumption a habit.

473 ml can served cold into a pint glass. LCBO purchase for about $4.25 CDN and canned August 31, 2023. Bumbleberry custard DIPA.

Appearance - Clear, orange / amber colored brew with a finger of loose white head. Pretty decent staying power and some visible bubbles.

Smell - Lots of berries, blueberry for sure with some other mixed berries, some indiscriminate sweetness and a touch of citrus. Strange for an IPA, but not really offputting.

Taste - Some fruitiness, with a wild sugary sweetness that actually does combine the berries with a sensation of custard and just enough bitterness to actually keep this balanced. Doesn't really feel like an IPA, but I'm not really sure where else to put it.

Mouthfeel - Medium-full bodied, crisp carbonation, booze is very well hidden and quite easy to drink quickly.

Overall - Strange beer, it's tasty enough and the bumbleberry custard aspect is actually nailed as well as it can. It's sort of IPA-ish but really pushing the boundaries, yet executes it's premise so well. Certainly an interesting beer and worth a shot.
