Rainbow Sherbet DIPA

Golly, it's delicious! Brewing in pure sunlight with friendly smiles inspired the happy flavours of a melty rainbow of fruity sherbet frolicking with hoppy friends. A merry medley of hops and tangy orange, lime & raspberry purees laced with ribbons of lactose bring sweet cutieness to this dimple-faced ice cream social.

Malts: Pale Malt (2-Row), Oat Malt, Crystal Malt
Hops: Nectaron, Idaho 7, Motueka
Dry-Hopping: El Dorado, Sabro

At my lady Pamela's house; canned and chilled, from my favourite LCBO at The Roundhouse Centre in nearby Windsor. My 11th beer from the Barrie, ON brewery.

473ml can served cold into a tulip. LCBO purchase for about $4.25 CDN. Canned July 12, 2024.

Appearance - Mildly hazy rich coppery color with some golden hues blended in. Big rocky finger and a half of white head. Excellent head retention.

Smell - Very fruity, some cranberry, pops of raspberry and orange too. Does give off a distinct fruit sherbet aroma amazingly. Not quite sure how this translates to an IPA, but interesting.

Taste - Semi bitter, pops of raspberry and cranberry again, a hint of orange and maybe extending to some lime in the aftertaste. Taste is not nearly as sweet as the nose, as was expected but the disparity here is quite striking. Wheat malt background.

Mouthfeel - Fairly full bodied, fairly crisp with good carbonation, semi dry finish.

Overall - A well constructed beer and true to the theme, but one complaint is that FM has been doing more of these one off gimmicky IPA's that are fine when seasonal but lack the depth to make it a brew to keep going back to. About three years ago they were rattling off IPA's and DIPA's that were unique and some had a bit of a gimmick, but all were eminently drinkable and tasty. Something seems to have changed, but if there's any way for FM to get back to that formula I'm all for it. With that said Rainbow and Smiles delivers what was promised and is well executed.

473 mL can
Served in a pokal glass

This beer pours a brilliant amber color and is topped with several inches of beige head that leaves rocky lacing.

Hints of orange, lime, and raspberry. It has a sweet aroma.

Sweet flavor upfront. Then some citrus from the hops clash with a bit of bitterness. Not a lot of bitterness but just enough to clash with the sweetness on the front end.

Medium bodied with a smooth mouthfeel

I love the smell. The taste is ok. The clash between sweet and bitter flavors doesn't do any favors.

473 mL can from the LCBO; dated May 24 2024 and served barely chilled. This is my hundredth DIPA review - cheers to a hundred more!

Pours a crystal clear golden-yellow colour, generating an inch of soapy, foamy white head that dissipates within three or four minutes. A frothy collar and sudsy cap remain atop, with a decent smattering of lace left behind. This could be mistaken for a pale lager at first glance, but one sniff disabused me of that notion - bright, citrusy notes of orange and raspberry don't come across as totally genuine, but they're enticing nonetheless. Hints of peach, pineapple, papaya and grapefruit are also discernible.

Not your every day DIPA, but then again, anyone familiar with the Flying Monkeys probably could've gathered that by glancing at the can. The lactose sweetness is quite pronounced, synergizing with notes of juicy raspberry, mandarin orange fruit cup slices, passion fruit, peach and pineapple. Finishes with black tea, lime zest & lime juice; hints of raspberry and lactose linger into a mildly warming aftertaste. Full-bodied, with average carbonation, contributing to a smooth, rather slick mouthfeel; fair drinkability for its strength, but one can is plenty.

Final Grade: 3.95, a B+. I didn't fall in love with Rainbows and Smiles, but I did thoroughly enjoy my glass. It's an atypical DIPA - but on a hot summer night, I could see myself preferring this over a more 'traditional' imperial IPA. Its hop flavours are relegated to the back seat, but the raspberry and citrus purées add a fruit-juicy feel that I found both approachable & enjoyable, in spite of their arguable inauthenticity. I mean, for a beer that contains fruit purées, its complexion is immaculately clear. The lactose is also a little intrusive, but it does jive adequately with the overall fruitiness. Like any of the Monkeys' IPAs, this is worth trying at least once.
