I was conflicted whether to put this as a chili beer or an American stout, I settled on American Stout because they used peppercorns rather than chili peppers. The effect was similar.
From the brewer, "Pepper Stout- Brewed with a blend of peppercorns in place of hops and with just a hint of hot peppers deep in the finish. Very smooth and mild. 5% A.B.V."
I had this beer on draft and on nitro, I will review it on draft because there was not much of a difference. This beer was black, had a tight brown head of tiny bubbles. Carbonation not determined. Not clear.
Beer smelled like roast and not much else, smell was rather weak though. Smelled as expected for a stout. Some caramel, some chocolate.
Unfortunately, this pleasantness of this beer disappears with the first taste. It tastes like ash at first, and second, it tastes like chili. There is some roast in the back but MAN is this beer hard to drink. Drinkability low, taste low, mouthfeel fine, its medium bodied but the flavors do not jive with one another. I will not reorder this beer.
