Notes: The Franklins Story:
Located in the heart of historic Hyattsville MD, Franklins is Prince Georges County’s first microbrewery, and the only combination restaurant, brewery, and toy store in the world. Franklins is a gathering place with deep roots in the Hyattsville community.

In 1992, Mike and Debra Franklin purchased the former Hyattsville Hardware Co, a Hyattsville institution located on a dying strip of route 1, and opened Franklins General Store & deli, helping to recapture the spirit of bustling community activity. The deli soon became a popular lunch spot, and eventually outgrew its limited space. In 2002, Franklins closed the deli portion of the store, and opened a 200 seat brewpub, and doubled the size of the store.

A Destination Point:
Since its inception, Franklins has been a destination for local families and craft beer lovers alike. The food menu combines quality brewpub fare, together with a host of locally sourced seasonal specials. The store supplies the neighborhood with cool gifts, toys, wine, beer, candy, cards and much more.

Good vibe, a wide variety of customers in the house during my visit; everyone from young urban professionals to families with kids. Like the two stories and store addition. Excellent quality beers, really above and beyond my expectations. Nice service, no real complaints. Selection was good, beerwise and foodwise. The food itself is also very satisfying; creative and tasty pizzas rule supreme. I will be coming back here, hopefully regularly.

I've been going to Franklin's when they were just a deli. The bar has a great view of the brewery (glass) - I've done some neat photography here. The beers on tap are all tier own (if you want other breweries, downstairs cooler has an Excellent collection of micros & wines). The beer styles change seasonally with a few staples that are year-round. Beers are good but sometimes the tap lines aren't the cleanest. I have a super sensitive nose & have worked in the industry, to be able to tell.)) Try the VanDam if it's offered. Stouts and Porters were always tasty, especially the Imperial Stouts.
Atmosphere in the bar is locals, college student w/their families, etc.
Bar area also has tables.
Art on the walls and sculptures are "meh" but it's a pseudo-college area.

Do not leave without visiting the toy store & pick up some gourmet food items. (Hot sauce, wine & a 6-Pk)!

Visited not too long ago with my fiancee. This place brews there own beer(always good). Atmosphere is very nice. Good bar are to hang out and an upstairs area with more tables. Food was very good. We both had pizzas and they were delicious.
Beer selection was pretty good. I would love to see more beers to chose from, but they can only brew so many at one time. They seem to switch up some often. We tried several beers and they were all very good quality. My favorite was the twisted turtle pale ale. The IPA and the antilles stout were also very good.

Happy New Year, ‘cause that’s when I gone gone there. Wake up and head home time from the hotel, and oh, Hyattsville is actually a DC burb, just a shorty drive away. This way, and up there I’m sure, and now we’ll turn around having just passed it. We can park right, what? It’s your own parking lot and you have to pay to play, ugh, but save, not today...

Stand alone building a century and some old with a large cartoon lettering vertical neon on the corner out front. In and up, to the mez over the back half of the place. It’s big, airy & open; I’m sure there’s lots of sun when it peeks its face, through the tall vertical windows in sets of 3 or 4 off the corner. The far wall is big brick, and the rest of the room is done in a deep yellow with orange trim, and burgundy I beams, rails & gatings about. The walls are adorned with local art for sale, and TV’s in the corners. Wide slat floors, corrugated ceiling, exposed ducts, drop quisp lamps & track baby spots.

“L” shaped copper topped bar to the right with a corrugated base, piping foot rail, and seating for a baker’s dozen. A pair of Stainless steel row towers with 6 taps each on the bar. Barback is framed wood boxings shelving booze, wine, glassware, mugs & growls around a center flatscreen over a brick wall. Tiered booze on a long shelf to the left over counter space, and more glassware shelved below, wine fridge & coolerings. Logo pieces displaying current tap selections on a large apparently not being used blackboard. Glass front brewrooms to the rear on both sides of the hallway loo, with fermenters and the like.

Slight bar counter space adjacent to the bar & 3 hightops, one of which I’m sitting at, and a dozen 2 seat hightops up front in the corner, pushed together as needed. On the other side of the room, a dozen and a half mix & match tables festively vinyl cloth covered. Also, at first I thought this was just a reflection, but yes it is so, there are 2 tables in one of those little rooms to the rear nosing up against a copper lauter tun.

Beer, maybe, definitely. The sampler is everything up, 9 of 10 beers listed. Bombshell Blonde, actually a Kolsch, light hoppiness, okay; Rubber Chicken Red, malty sweetness, but just misses; Twisted Turtle Pale Ale, grainy, English Pale Ale, East Kent Goldings; Sierra Madre, west coast pale ale, cascade, big hop nose; Private IPA, 7%, a whole lot of bitterness, I can deal; Golden Opportunity, Belgian golden, 6.5% and not sickly sweet, but meh; Black Dog (nitro), thinnish and too much so, a bit of the good licorice though; Highland Hugh, scotch ale, 8%, big malt sweety, without the alcohol burn; Old Miser, an old ale at 8.5%, rich, malty fruit bomb, sweet & deep. I’m thinking the Twisted Turtle Pale Ale & Highland Hugh were the best of ‘em.

And as we’re in the lunching hour, I had the catfish gumbo (okra, tasso ham, andouille sausage, crawfish & catfish in a deep dark rich stew). It was quite good and there was much rejoicing. She opted for the pomegranate and orange salad (good, but too much dressing), and a side of gorgonzola mashed potatoes (and dissed, received the garlic mashed instead). Disappointed, she, as garlic mashed potatoes could be had anytime. These contained full on garlic cloves and were good, although swimming in butter.

Downstairs, more deep yellow with blue trim, and some peach & purple, and walls of window front & side off the corner. Local art, some of it quite good, and a specials board just past the reception desk. Wish I’d known the soup of the day was turkey barley, I like everything about that there. The day could’ve played differently. Just shy of 3 dozen booths & tables in groups of 3 or 4 mostly; some are clothed like the ones upstairs but in a different color scheme, and a 5 seat bar to the rear looking right in on the kitchen. Up front, the reception area has a chair shaped like a giant hand. I am sitting in it. Looking up, I can see a trio of tin soldiers above the front vestibule. And just off there, a cut through to the side general store. Toys, candy and I mean lots of candy, like all sorts of candy (I heart candy), hot sauces, greeting cards, wines, chachki, stuff. Oh, and beer to the rear, both coolered and not (Stillwaters, hello).

We have decided that we like the use of space here. Yes. Comfortable house, good crowd, pleasant serving type people. Food was good (for me anyway) and the beer was okay, I suppose. Nothing fall of my chair wow, but decent for the most part. Should you find yourself in the DC burbs...

Tussled away in an obscure DC area of Hyattsville Maryland just off historic Route 1, sits Franklins, a former hardware store in a sleepy side of town. The area is fairly quiet but there are lately atempts to turn it into an art district.

Franklins is truly a unique place. A brewer bought an old hardware store and turned it into a candy,joke and adult beverage business. On the other side sits the restaurant.

This place doesn't pass as a typical Cracker Barrel or other chain versions of those kinds of places Franklins is truly the real deal. Staff are incredibly nice and helpful, and genuine.

Now the food is quite good. Sandwiches though are massive, and you will be told often you're taking them home. That said though the place isn't a feeding trough either. Fresh ingredients, check out the specials often. Highlights were a grilled peach salad topped with prosciutto and a clam burger (Clamwich) made from just received and fresh clams. Delicious and plump.

Standards fit fine, an enormous turkey club, solid fish and chips that aren't soggy. Then there is the beer.

THere are usually about 8 offerings on tap, with some of the standards such as the IPAs, Hefeweizen, and Pale Ales being quite solid. The DIPA is quite good. Others miss the mark.

Then after you have fed yourself you can then go to general store and truly be a kid in a candy store. Besides all the trinkets, some of the brewed beer is for sale in the back in the cooler. How awesome is that, along with other beer and wine to be had.

This is truly and adults drinking and eating amusement park, it can't be beat.

Franklins is truly one of a kind.

I like IPA s . I had the pleasure of trying their "double IPA " - the actual beer name was a play on the name of the " beastie boys".
I enjoyed it very much .Nice hop character with a spicy after taste .
I was visiting in College Park and was surprised not to find more beer bars in the area. So we drove 4 miles and tried this brewery . The ribs and salad were both excellant . I did sample some of their other beers and was not impressed.
This area needs a good beer bar.

I don't often review places, however I thought this placed deserved a quick review. The Atmosphere is relaxed family friendly with an attached toy store & gift shop,where you can purchase good beer to go. The beer quality has been questionable in the past but the new brewer Mike Roy has managed to take the PG county water and turn it into something not only enjoyable but pretty damn good. Generally there are more than enough styles of beer on tap to keep me happy and sampling with their half pint serving option. The food is good if you stick to the seasonal specials menu, if you venture off that you run the risk of having a pizza with too much cheese (I did not know this was possible before), or vegetarian cottage pie that is not as appetizing as the menu suggest. For a final though I would just like to say If you haven't been here with in the last 6 months, give it another chance and support your local brewery, the progress this establishment is making will encourage you to return.

I had high hopes for this place, seriously. I went in and read the menu, seemed like a cool place. Art hanging on the walls produced for sale by local artists, 10, count them 10 beers on draft. I got a sampler of 7 of them (one was out) and eagerly tasted them. The first few were pale ales, esb, ipa, standard fair but each had flat unappealing flavors, I will review the beers at a later date. They were cheap to order and the wait staff was helpful and responsive. We ordered food as well. The lamb sliders were amazing, should have just order a few more plates of them. The rest of the food was unremarkable, not bad, just plain. The beers unfortunately were not good at all. And I object to them calling their Kolsch a blonde. Wrong. Sorry Hyattsville, you still need a brewpub.

It's been almost six years since the last time I tried Franklin's. The last time I reviewed them I was trashed for my opinion. Since I finally had an opportunity to go again, I went hoping that whatever it was everyone else liked might be there this time. Maybe the last time I went was a fluke.

It wasn't. This time was no better, and in some ways worse.

I had the Poorhouse Porter and their blonde which was supposed to be a kolsch. The porter was drinkable, meaning that I was able to finish the pint. But it was watery and flat with just a little bitterness at the front.

The first sip of the blonde, my reaction was simply to say "Ugh". It was sour and sharp. I realized it tasted mostly like a Budweiser, with little true flavor. Kolsch is one of my go to beers at my local, and this was nothing like it.

I asked to try the nitrogen tap, but it was out. They were also out of the half chicken and all the ribs. Unfortunately, they didn't mention they were out until after we tried to order them, which meant another few minutes reading the menu. I ended up with an over cooked but acceptable burger. The fires were good, though.

I enjoyed the thai barbecue sauce but my wife found the Thai platter too greasy for her.

I liked some of the art, especially the tin soldiers made of old cans.

I know I may catch hell for this again, but I was very disappointed in this restaurant and even if third times a charm, i won't be going back to fing put.

This place has good size parking lot and did not have to worry about looking for a parking space. I arrived about 15 minutes before they were going to close. I asked if they were serving food and the waitress said not. I asked if the bar was open upstairs and it was. There were a few people at the bar. I asked the bartender if I could get the sampler and he said OK without a hesitation. The people next to me ordered food, so I asked if I could still order and he said for the next 8 minutes. So I ordered the Cowboy Burger with BBQ sauce on the side, the burger was good, but the fries were really good, they some seasoning on them. The sampler included 10 beers; one of them was one of the 9 on Nitro. I liked all the beers, not bad beers in the bunch. If in the area I say it is worth the trip. The people at the beer were really friendly and I talked to several of them. The bartender was really nice and helpful even when they were about to close when arrived.

Franklin's is in Hyattsville, MD, where Rhode Island Ave. turns into Baltimore Ave. You can drive right by it if you're not careful, despite the fact that it's quite large. It is housed in an old blacksmith and carriage shop (and later a hardware store) from the 1880s. Franklin's restaurant and general store opened in 1992, and they added the brewpub in 2002 - a worthy addition.

You walk in and you suddenly realize the place is much bigger than it looks from outside. Two stories high and two buildings wide, it houses the restaurant on the first floor, with the general store right next door (there are two entry-ways connecting the two places). The general store sells a lot of crap, but they also sell wine and beer, and the both selections are much better than I would have expected them to be.

The bar is upstairs, above the restaurant. It is roomy and spacious, with three televisions for movies and sports, and extra seating for over-flow restaurant-goers. The whole esthetic of the place is a bit hard to figure out. It's got a funky arts-and-crafts feel to it, with a crazy yellow/orange/purple color scheme. There is a sit-down Ms. Pac-Man table near the bar as well, which is always an added bonus in my opinion.

The bar staff is usually hit-or-miss. I've had weak, aloof bartenders before that were terrible, and I've had nice, knowledgeable people as well. Tonight, the bartender was nice, but the waiter helping her was a bit surly. I guess that helps keep things even-steven. The manager, whom I spoken to a couple of times, has always been nice and helpful.

The food menu is fairly basic, but varied. Pizzas, burgers, salads, bar-b-que, and fish and chips - your typical pub grub. But it's also more varied than most bars/pubs. Tonight I had the Chicken Pot Pie. It was a bit uninspired, but after I added some salt and pepper to it it was just fine. And it was a HUGE portion. Seriously, this sucker filled me up. I probably should have taken some home with me, but I was hungry. It'll do you right if you need your belly filled.

On to the beers! Man, I love the Franklin's beer selection. They're not all that great, but they're all fairly good, and the brewer has a sense of adventure. Tonight, there were four standard brews on tap - a blonde, an IPA, a pale ale, and something they call "Anarchy," which is a different brew each time. I'm not sure what it was tonight. They also had five seasonals available this evening - an imperial stout, a mild, a DIPA, a barleywine, and a bitter. I had the B.B. King Bitter, and the Chaos (DIPA). Both were very nice, although the Chaos was better. The fact that there is always a nice variety of homebrews makes this place that much more enjoyable to visit. The bartenders are also happy to pour some samples if you're not sure what you want.

If you find yourself in the greater DC area and you're craving some comfort food and good beer, then definitely visit Franklin's. It's a nice place with good food and drink, and it's big enough to take a large party of people to without disrupting their system. Plus, you can tinker around and maybe buy some beer to go in the general store next door when you're through eating. Not bad.

atmosphere suffers because it was non-smoking. damn the pleasure police! they had about 8 of their beers on tap when i went along with some guest beers and even a macro (bud light i think) for the sheep. i dutifully tried all of them, and loved the name of one of their beers-"mission accomplished." but this probably ain't funny to people in iraq. our consensus favorite (even among the lite-swilling ladies) was the chaos dipa on nitro tap. good fucking shit. several pale/ipa styles to try here. service was fine, normal brewpub atmosphere. menu looked run of the mill. this place was much better than a chain brewpub.

This is my neighborhood brewpub and I thought it fitting that it should be my first review.

Franklin's in an interesting location as far as brewpubs go and I think it owes a lot of that to the location. The nearby residential communities are generally composed of younger families and so the atmosphere of Franklin's tends to be very family-friendly as a result. However, the University of Maryland is right up the road and many students tend to frequent the pub, especially later in the evenings. I think Franklin's also has a lot to offer the younger drinker from the PacMan machine in the bar area to the generous Thursday evening late-night happy hour buffet complete with a DJ. Franklin's doesn't seem to excel in any particular way but perhaps that's just fine when you have something to offer to everyone.

The offerings do change frequently and even the same menu item or beer variety will vary somewhat between batches or what have you. If you crave consistency, look elsewhere.

The atmosphere is semi-industrial with high cielings and exposed metalwork. The whole brewpub occupies a former hardware supply and it's interesting how they've adapted to the environment yet kept enough of the industrial feel to make things interesting.

Quality is good and well-valued. The people here put effort into their work and it shows. Service is responsive and friendly but most importantly, they're honest. Go ahead and ask the bartender how the Chaos is doing on nitrogen. They'll tell it to you straight and if you're still undecided, a free sample is on the house. With a brewpub that changes as this one does, it is very nice to have a staff that's willing to alert you as to how certain brews or menu items are doing on a particular day or week. Just don't ask the generic question, "So what's good today?" XD
The Franklin's staff has always deserved a good tip in my experience and I'm very thankful for that.

The selection runs the gamut of beer styles with a surprisingly diverse variety for how relatively small the brewpub is. The only downside is that they don't always carry every style so you may have to wait a while to taste one brew or another. The beer itself is much like the restaurant. None of it is superior but everything has a little bit to offer to anyone who drinks it. Depending on the batch, all the varieties have the capability of being a top-notch brew of their type. I think the fluctuation is a good thing and it keeps you honest and appreciative when you find one that you really like. When you do find that smile-inducing brew, the growlers are very reasonably-priced.

The food is classic Maryland cuisine. As a waitress once said to me on one particular visit, "I don't need to eat anything that's not covered with Old Bay." Of course, all their menu items aren't lathered in this wonderful spice and they'll withhold it upon request even from the ones that are. I do recommend that you try the offerings as-prepared, however. Especially the onion rings. Beer batter and Old Bay over huge slices of crunchy white onions and fried to a golden crisp? Mmmm... The food is universally tasty but again, nothing superior here. Just good, wholesome eats with something to offer for everyone.

A full meal with two beers each, tax and gratuity will cost around $20-25 per person. If you're just watching the game at the bar you can expect to pay a bit less, especially during happy hour. It should be noted that there are a few bar menu items which are always discounted such as quesedillas and those wonderful onion rings.

It's worth going if you're in the area. It's casual and neither the beer nor the food will completely blow your mind. The beer is challenging enough and has enough character to keep the experience interesting. There's a little something here for everyone. The excellent, friendly service is what really pulls it all together.

A - The atmosphere is pretty nice. I have been there once for dinner and twice for their Thursday night happy hour event. The downstairs has a neat decor - rather modern. The kid/adult toy and beer/wine store is an eccentric oddity. I've yet to purchase anything since it is a tad expensive and I have no use for odd toys. The beer selection is, while small, providing a lot of variety of good beer. Very expensive though.

Q - Great. Franklin's beers are rather good. The Anarchy Ale is a bit unpredictable (intentionally so) but aside from that, I have never had a beer there that I was dissapointed in.

Sv - Good. The bartenders and waitresses I have dealt with have been nothing but friendly and helpful.

Sl - I wish they had more dark beers on their menu. They always have a ton of IPAs that taste a little similia, but only one dark beer . . . if any.

F - Really good. The regular food is fantastic. The food during the Thursday night Happy Hour is too spicy. Not on account of it hurting, but it detracts from the quality of their beers. I understand why they do it - to make people drink more. Even that food (just two dollars cost) of ribs and nachos is really good though.

V - The happy hour is completely worth it. The regular prices are also good - about average for brewpub food.

As always, a good brewpub that does food should change from time to time, the beers and food. Franklin's does that, but keeps the things that either sell or they like to have on the menu for veggies or variety. They are kid friendly and always have at least 6 beers on. A sampler may get you as many as 10 beers. The winter gets some strong beers like barleywine and imperial stout, and some years they've had belgian dubbel and tripel. Food is almost always excellent, beers tend to the hoppy side as the brewer prefers. The beers are almost all unfiltered, some much cloudier than most would prefer but they do have a house character since he used Fuller's Ale strain exclusively(except for the belgian's obviously). Beers at HH are $1, 4:30-6:30. Franklin's isn't cheap but very good quality for the money.

Very colorful inside, with some industrial feeling silver ceilings. There is a good look at the brewing equipment on the second floor. The general store has lots of kids toys, games, hot sauces, and a decent selection of beers. There were some Belgians, Germans, and American craft brews for purchase. The place was very busy, and it took several minutes to get our beers. I had a sample of all 11 beers that they were offering. Most were decent, however Anarchy, Chaos and Sierra Madre stood out for me. One of the beers was served both on draft, and on nitro. Food was good, and the service was friendly. Our server had good knowledge of the beers that they had. A very nice stop. While none of the beers were mind blowing, most were solid. As a bonus, they do sell growlers.

Went here last night with my wife, two young kids, and several friends. Its right on 1 in the "Hyattsville Arts District" which is more wishful thinking than anything else. Its a good 2 miles from the nearest Metro station near as I can tell. There is ample parking right next to the brewpub.

The restaurant side of thinks is light and airy with high ceilings, two floors, blond wood and bright colors and some nice eclectic touches scattered around. The general store is filled with weird kitschy toys that greatly appealed to the kids as well as a strong, if small selection of beers and offbeat wines. The beers there include lots of local offerings and a few Belgians, but not much of the really unusual.

The quality overall is just decent. We had a number of brews, most of which were pleasantly hopped but very grainy tasting, almost chewy, or at the opposite end a little too thin. IMO the best beers we had were the Private IPA (nice and crisp, hoppy, and a little grainy but well balanced) and the Twisted Turtle Pale Ale (crisp followed by juicyfruit flavor-like Gumball Head!!- and some nice hoppiness). The Anarchy Ale was a little watery tasting, with a nice hop bitterness, but without the backbone to support it. The Blonde tasted somewhat like a Wit beer, but could use a little more spiciness or tartness to give it some oomph. The Sierra Madre was like a Christmas tree at first taste- extremely piney, although this mellowed and it became fairly nice. It being a very hot evening, we didn't try the oatmeal stout and they were out of the Dubbel. If you stick to the ones they do well, you could have a nice experience. I would definitely drink more of the IPA.

Service was mostly excellent. Everyone was very accomodating of our two youngsters, the waiter was attentive and seemed to know the product, some food was produced instantaneously, other food took a little long.

The food was, in short, not great and pretty pricey to boot. Its true that this area of the region has pretty slim pickings for places to eat, and in that regard its one of the better in the area, but compared to other pubs I've liked, its not even close. They do have kids meals, which is a plus, but they could do better than just carrot sticks as the kids vegetable. Two of us had the ribs- overcooked and greasy. They had obviously been steam cooked for too long before roasting/smoking, and then left in some sort of holding area for two long. They unfortunately maintained fattiness while being dry at the same time. The flavor was okay, and the sauces were good. The crab cakes were a little flabby, but were filled with lump crab and very little filler. They were flavored with too much bay seasoning, and were pricey at $25 for two. The mashed potatos were skin on an very good. The Shepards pie was also quite good. My wife had the rockfish which she siad was one of the blandest dishes she'd had in a while. The fish, which was nicely cooked, was drowned in a pale yellow curry cream sauce that was tasteless and a little glutinous. Alongside was boiled unseasoned brocolli and plain white rice. The appetizers were hit or miss- the calamari was good, but a little oily, and the onion rings were way too greasy and bready. Appetisers were about $10 a pop. The six of us and two tikes had a bill of over $200. A good place to drink beer, but order simply as cheaply as possible from the menu. The kitchen definitely overreaches its capabilities, and the bang is not worth the buck.

This is our first visit to Franklin's (our being me, my wife and 17 mo old son). I got a hankerin' to visit after reading Lew Bryson's Virginia, Maryland and Delaware Breweries.

Atmosphere: Damn! Hyattsville is a depressing little burg. And smack dab in the middle is an oasis of beer geek delights! Franklin's is a pleasant, modern building on Rte 1. The design of the dining area is wide and airy and the second floor bar is pleasant, overlooking the brewing equipment. Also attached is a knick-knack store (the General Store part of the name) that had an impressive beer display.

Quality: From sit down to leave, the service, food and beer were top notch.

Service: Service was fast and efficient, tracking down the nitro pour of the day and providing a sample of 'Chaos' (a Double IPA that is not for the faint of heart, myself included).

Selection: Five house brews, 1 seasonal, 3 big beers and 1 nitro pour. Very nice selection, especially the dubbel and nitro Twisted Turtle.

Food: Food consisted of a chicken satay appetizer, highly recommended; a cuban sandwich that was passable and a white pizza. Add to that a kids menu that kept the monkey-boy in line, and food was more than adequate.

Value: Reasonaly priced, Franklins is a jewel in the wasteland of PG County.
