Crisp and aromatic, with a piney, roasted grainy nose and a taste both sweet and bitter, with an earthy flavor and very lingering bitter finish. Also slightly sour taste almost like a rye ale.

Appearance: Pours a beautiful black with a quickly fading tan-ish head. Looks nice, but doesn't appear to have much carbonation.
Smell: Really nice citrusy hop notes. A touch of roasty, malt backbone. The citrus is the star. Citra hops very prominent in the nose.
Taste: Again very nice. Strong anchoring bitterness. Really nice tropical and citrusy notes. With some roasty, malt-like bitterness and burnt notes as well. Good balance between all of these elements. Drinks very easy for 8%.
Mouthfeel: This is what is keeping this beer from being at the top of the style. This sample was pretty significantly undercarbed. Great flavors that would pop quite a bit more with a little prickliness.
Overall: Great nose, great flavor. A little more carbonation and this beer would be outstanding. As it is, still very good.

Had The Hop Strikes Back on-tap at Franklin's on 1/27/13. It's a Double Black IPA.
Appearance: Dark black with a nice head and lacing. Looks great.
Smell: You can smell the hops a mile away. It had some nice bitter dark chocolate, grapefruit, sweet roasted malt flavors.
Taste: About exactly the same as the nose.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied.
Overall: I enjoyed this Double Black IPA. Not sure I could have too much of it at a time, but I'd have it again. It had some really nice flavors mixed in; a pleasant surprise.
