12oz bottle poured into a snifter.

A: Pitch black. Beige head forms and retains well. Thin rings of lacing cake onto the glass.

S: Blanket of roastiness up front. French roast coffee, smokey, mocha. Dark chocolate and fudge sauce, fatty cocoa nibs. Distinct whiffs of tart cherry underneath. Oaky bourbon barrel brings wood and toasty vanillins. Salted caramel.

T: As in the nose, the roastiness hits up front. Smoke, French roast, almost sooty. A big wave of chocolate sweetness follows that. Chocolate ganache, mocha sauce, lots of fatty nibs. Coffee is even more pronounced in flavor and clearly more of a medium roast as it differentiates itself from the dark malt. Cherry is juicy and only slightly tart. It builds on the back end and takes center stage. Barrel flavors of bourbon, oak, and toasty vanilla peek around it but never upstage it. Finish is all cherry and sooty roast.

M: Thick and rich in body. Moderate toothy chew. Rife with residuals, but not quite sticky or coating. There's a heavy silkiness to the texture. Carbonation is ample and gently lifting.

O: The chocolate and cherry flavors are both rather focal and steal the thunder of the barrel contribution in particular. By no means is it a bad drink; just more hedonistic and less complex than the OG, despite the added ingredients. It is still great and well worth a drink.

On tap at Frisco Taphouse in Gambrills, MD. This tastes very similar to regular KBS - I kept searching for the cherry but could barely detect any. Chocolate, coffee, and bourbon dominate. Still very tasty, but IMO not as advertised.

Pours almost black with some red highlights. About a half inch of brown foam that falls to a ring and a decent island.

The smell is obviously KBS. Malty and with roast coffee. The cherry comes through as it warms along with hints of the barrel. A touch of alcohol. Bourbon and vanilla with a slight woody character.

The taste is lead by chocolate and cherry as an aromatic. Very nice coffee taste and the cherry gets a bit more assertive later in the taste. Slightly boozy, mild barrel taste and a very good balancing vanilla sweetness. Kind of a cola flavor as the main taste fades. Very mild phenolic spice.

Feel is slightly more than medium and not super thick but still decadent. Flavors are clean and bitterness is quite low. Pleasantly warming. Nice cherry aromatic lingers.

Overall I'm enjoying this one quite a bit. It's not overly flavored and retains it's identity as a KBS family member.

Black in color with a fingernail of brown on top. The aroma is of coffee, chocolate, and cherries. I’m tasting chocolate, coffee, bourbon, and subtle tart cherries. The mouth is silky and a bit boozy.

Picked up a single from the Appalachian Vintner in Asheville 1-23-23 for 6.32. Bottled 12-5-22; consumed 10-19-23.

Beer poured black with a gorgeous tan head that has some great hang time.

Nose is chocolate and coffee forward with a touch of bourbon on the back end.

Taste is large malt base in which the chocolate is forward with some coffee coming in right behind providing an offset for the sweet base. Light notes of cherry come in with aspirations. Bourbon kicks in on the back end with a touch of vanilla leading to a balanced finish.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and smooth.

Overall i like this better than i thought ahead of this. Definitely worthy of a purchase.

Poured from a bottle into pint glass in Oct 2023. There was a bottled on date of 12/05/2022 @ 15:09. I drank this 1 day after purchase.

Appearance: Very dark black with a thick dark brown head. Head was about 2 fingers high, and lasted a minute. It leaves very little lacing on the glass, and ended with a thin tan head still on the beer.

Smell: Excellent aroma mix of maple, chocolate, and bourbon, in that order. There is also some coffee, vanilla, caramel, and some other sweet aroma like black licorice, but overall the maple and chocolate dominate the others. It is a very nice balance of aromas, and I expected the bourbon to dominate which it did not.

Taste: There is a nice balance between the chocolate, bourbon, and some cherry flavors. The chocolate flavor is pronounced, but balanced with other flavors. There is some coffee, smokie roasted flavors, some caramel and vanilla flavors to enhance the taste and add some complexity. There is a strong alcohol presence, which matches the 11.6% on the label, but it is balanced nicely by the sweetness. The taste is an excellent mix.

Mouth-feel: Thick like liquid licorice, but with a smooth body. Not overly smooth like a Milk Stout.

As with all the KBS varieties I have tried, this is an excellent, complex, Imperial Stout, and it has a variety of flavors that adds a nice complexity to the beer. Although this is a big beer, it is very smooth and enjoyable to drink. This chocolate sweetness nicely contrasts the bourbon flavor, and is a nice balance to the high alcohol content. I prefer the regular KBS and also Founder's CBS to the more flavored varieties, but these are excellent. Still this is one my favorite Founder's stout, and one of my favorite stouts overall. I just wish it was not so expensive.

My current favorite stouts in order are:
Founder's CBS
Founder's KBS
Goose Island Beer's Bourbon County Brand Stout
Weyerbacher's Sunday Morning Stout
Fegley's Bourbon Barrel Aged Insidious
Hoppin' Frog's BORIS Oatmeal Imperial Stout - Barrel Aged
Sierra Nevada Barrel-Aged Narwhal
Founder's KBS - Maple Mackinac Fudge
Avery Bourbon Barrel-Aged Czar Imperial Stout
Founders Breakfast Stout

An after Wednesday night hockey beer, pleasant, comforting stout.

Poured from a bottle into a tulip glass. Rich dark brown color with nice brown head and good curtain lacing. Smell and taste of a boozy dark chocolate cherry cordial. The cherry flavor is subtle which I think is best. Now would like to try the blueberry!

12 FL OZ bottle
Served in a snifter

This beer pours black and is topped with an inch of mocha head that leaves spotty lacing.

Served close to room temperature I get notes of dark chocolate, anise, and hints of cherry.

Chocolate flavor upfront followed by cherry. I get a little anise. The alcohol is hidden better in the taste. Hints of vanilla and caramel.

Medium bodied with a smooth mouthfeel

It's a fine addition to the KBS family.

Pours black with a one finger tan head with nice retention and lacing. Nice aroma with chocolate, cherry juice, coffee, and bourbon. Tastes like it smells. sweet with a lot of chocolate and cherry flavor front and center. Finishes nicely with a little bitter coffee at the end to create some balance. Medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation. Smooth, almost silky. Has a sweet chocolate aftertaste with a little coffee bitterness. A very nicely made beer.

Pours a one finger brown head that fades quickly, leaving a little lace. Black color, no highlights. Light carbonation and medium-heavy bodied. Chocolate and coffee nose. Flavor follows with some sweetness, but the cherry seems to be hidden. Higher ABV, 11.6% starts to show, decent imperial stout. 12oz bottle, gift.

A- pours jet black in color with a one-finger foamy khaki head that reduces to a ring

S- classic kbs aroma up front; charred malt, dark chocolate, espresso, anise & plenty of barrel that adds caramel, barel juice, light vanilla and sharp oak. A soft undertone of cherry cordial pops through, giving aromas of chocolate covered cherries

T- dark chocolate, brownie batter, caramel up front. Mid-palate brings out notes of earthy espresso before the barrel kicks in, adding vanilla cream, oaky barrel juice and enhancing caramel. The finish gives a light undertones of cherry cordial, reminiscent of a chocolate covered cherry. Lingers of barrel, espresso and char

Pours thick black with a one finger head. Aroma is deeply chocolate, cherry and tones of roasted malt. Taste is soft, sweet, not as fully bodied as expected but also chocolate and cherry. The chocolate taste is not as prominent as the aroma, however. Nicely balanced and quite satisfying.

8/13/23 Poured from a 12 oz bottle purchased at Washington Beer Store in Washington PA.

Deep blackout in color. Beige head with less leaving than expected.

Aroma slight metallic heavy chocolate slight bourbon. Sour cherry does come through.

Taste is deep sweet chocolate characteristic molasses of a stout. Definitely a sweet one with a roasted bitterness. As stated by another reviewer the bourbon is understated, the alcohol warmth is definitely there!

Very smooth on the lips.

Keep 'em coming Founder's!
